Looking normal in Hero society was an incredibly, incredibly subjective thing.
This was a world in which looking more like a regular Human was more rare than having a mutation of some sort. Quirks affected peoples' biologies in so many different ways that every single person was almost fundamentally different to every other person on a genetic or biological level. Concepts that divided people in the past like race had long been utterly abolished. Everyone looked different to everyone else, there weren't really any categories that made sense to split people into.
Even within that society though, some people stood out more than others. Some people had patterns on their skin, and some had the heads of a bovine, ten fingers on each hand, and a thin tail. It was very subjective as to what was normal and what wasn't.
The very baseline of normalcy had long been eradicated. What was normal was now abnormal. Even the normal baseline of Humanity had mutated - Two hundred years ago, Izuku's green hair, which turned towards black the closer it got to his roots, wouldn't be normal, by any stretch of the imagination. The world had completely changed around them. If someone from the past was transported to the modern day, it would have to be like setting foot onto an alien world, surely.
Still, even within that society, Mina was one of the more standout individuals.
Her pink skin made her contrast against the greys of the cities and pulled attention to her wherever she went. Not that she was the only person who has an unusual skin colour, but the brightness of it helped pull eyes towards her. If that was all it was, that in of itself would be enough, but that was only one of her mutations.
There were her horns that came from her skull, made of bone. They jutted up, then hooked back, and then craned back forward. The taller she got, the more she joked that eventually her horns were going to get caught on the doorframes. It had already happened a few times.
Finally, came her eyes. No idea where those came from, she claimed. Literally none. Her family tree, right back to when Quirklessness was the default, showed nothing that would indicate her black sclera. Even her golden irises were an oddity to her. They just seemed to be natural mutations that occurred irregardless.
Regardless of their origins though…
Izuku adored them.
Mutations were always something that interested Izuku.
Perhaps it was due to his own lack of any definitive features, or perhaps it was how his brain worked - Constantly thinking about Heroism, and how to better utilize just about anything he could in order to become a better Hero.
Mutations were the new normal of mankind. They were present in nearly everyone who had a Quirk, and they ranged incredibly from person to person. One person might have four arms, or someone might have multiple skin colours, or extra digits, or just an iris in an unusual shape. They ranged from outlandish to subtle. Some mutations became so common as to practically become a divergence onto the baseline - Like white pupils that a great many people had.
To Izuku's mind, mutations that had next to nothing to do with a person's Quirk could be utilized. It was always something he considered, growing up around people with them. Someone like, say, Kirishima, if he needed to, could use his sharp teeth to bite someone if the situation ever presented itself and he had no alternative - Admittedly he wasn't sure what sort of situation would come up where that would happen, but the option was open to him.
Those mutations could vary from person to person - Todoroki's were his bi-colured hair and his heterochromia, and Uraraka's were her finger-pads, so it wasn't like this advantage was something that was open to everyone. It was something he was interested in though.
Which is why when Aizawa gave them all an assignment designed to make the students question what other aspects of themselves a person could utilize in Heroism, Izuku seized the chance to engage in this particular area. To him, it made sense - Some mutations could even be qualified almost as secondary Quirks, right? If someone could breathe fire, but also had a tail they could move, the tail could be utilized just as much as the fire breath if the situation allowed it.
He didn't lack people he could speak to about this either. His class was full of people with mutations. There were only a few people who didn't. Maybe they would have experience with that sort of thing?
"Eh, not really."
Or maybe not.
Izuku blinked at Mina, slightly surprised by the bluntness of her answer. "S-Seriously?"
"Yeah, it's never come up." She paused. "Well, no, actually, it did come up once, back in elementary school. Some jerks tried to mess with me so I headbutted them." She smirked, like she was remembering the incident in amusement. "Turns out getting your face close to someone who has horns wasn't a great idea."
There were a lot of people that Izuku could have spoken to when it came to their mutations, but not a whole lot for the type he was interested in looking into. He was interested mostly in mutations unrelated to their Quirks, and mutations that were distinct. This ruled out Uraraka and Iida, for their Quirks were directly related to their mutations, and others like Shoij and Sero, as well as people like Kaminari and Todoroki who had minor mutations.
That left a few people. Koda wasn't one for talking all that much and Izuku still struggled with sign language a fair bit, and somehow he felt…. Awkward about asking Tokoyami about his. He could peck his opponents, Izuku supposed, but bringing that up would seem… Weird, to him. That more or less narrowed his immediate options down to just a couple of people, at least within his class.
Of everyone, Mina was probably the most approachable, so he sort of defaulted towards her. Given her horns were more or less perfect for the sort of subject Izuku was thinking of going into, it all balanced out. But she didn't seem to see her horns in the same manner.
"So that was… Something, then?" Izuku asked, tilting his head slightly.
"I mean, I guess." Mina shrugged. "Hurt me like hell though. I mean, it probably hurt him more than me, but yeah."
"They hurt?"
"Oh yeah. They're attached to my skull, dude. These things hurt if they get hit or bent. I didn't even play soccer for these things until like, a couple years ago, cause i was afraid of them getting hit by the ball.."
"Were you…. Born with them?" At this point, Izuku was now more curious than anything.
"Nope." Mina answered, flicking her left horn with her finger. "These things started growing around the same time my teeth did. Took them longer to grow too."
"Did… That hurt?"
"Like you wouldn't freakin' believe." Mina laughed again, in spite of herself. "I dunno how to explain it - Kinda like having a screw drilled into your head I guess? Sharp but also all over the place? Thats… Kinda the best way to put it I suppose? You're kinda lucky on that front dude. These things hurt like hell for a long time."
"So…. I guess using the horns is out of the question."
The pink girl looked him straight in the eyes. "Oh yeah." She chuckled. "Absolutely."
Mina's eyes were mutations too. Black sclera. Normally Izuku looked away from people - At least in the eyes - When he spoke to them. Right now though, they were talking about mutations. So this time, he didn't.
Her eyes were beautiful.
He didn't think that in a sort of… Intimate sense? Or in a sense of wanting to admire a person's appearance. In his mind it was just… He couldn't describe it.
Factual? Objective? Just… Something that… Was. They were something that just pulled him to them. Once he looked, he found it difficult to look away. They were….
"...Yo, you alright?"
He'd just been standing there, staring at her eyes for the last who knew how long hadn't he.
Oh God.
Mina snapped her fingers twice in front of his face. "Seriously, you okay?" She had an eyebrow raised and a slightly amused expression on her face. "Not usually the eyes I have to tell people to not stare at."
Izuku went bright red, and quickly looked away from her eyes. "U - Uh, S - s - sorry!"
"Haven't heard you stutter like that for a while." Mina teased, smirking outright now. "You a fan of my eyes? Is this just a thing you have, you like mutations?"
"N - No! Not like - I - "
Her smirk just grew. "Oh it totally is isn't it."
"I - It isn't!"
"That why you were asking about them?"
"No!"
"So you don't like them?"
"I don't - " Izuku paused, and remembered who he was talking to. "...I - I feel like you're messing with me."
"Just a bit." Mina grinned, though she still looked mighty smug.
"S… Sorry." Izuku muttered, still blushing. "For… Staring. Y… .You… Do have…. Nice eyes… I - I didn't mean to stare though!"
"...Thanks." She smiled, noting for future reference that Izuku Midoriya liked her eyes.
