Harry Potter sat in front of his favorite café in muggle London, enjoying the cool morning, drinking his coffee and reviewing his latest financial reports from Gringotts. No major changes to his portfolios. He was still ridiculously rich. As he moved on to his other folder filled with things for him to review about the next session for the Wizenagamot that he had received from his mentor, he was interrupted by a familiar voice.
"Well hello stranger," said a soft sweet voice that Harry knew very well. He looked up at the beautiful Katie Bell standing in front of him. Her hair was long and as black as his, her skin a perfect olive color. One thing Harry had never noticed before was her incredible body shape. Wizarding robes really were horrible for anyone's figure.
"Damn. I have been found," said Harry with a smile. "Whatever shall I do?"
"Buy a girl a drink and catch up with an old friend," Katie replied with a smile.
Harry motioned for her to sit in the seat across from him. He closed his folder and placed it in his bag. He waved down the waitress and Katie ordered some fancy coffee that Harry had never heard of.
"So, how have you been," Harry asked?
"Better now. Last year really sucked. But I guess you already know that."
Harry did know that. What was supposed to be his seventh year at Hogwarts turned into a game of hide and seek. Sometimes he was hiding. Sometimes he was seeking. In the end, a lot of people died, and Harry had finally finished off Voldemort.
"That I do. That I do. I'm just glad it is finally over and I can maybe have a life. Not really sure that is possible, but one can wish."
Katie looked at him with confusion. She had always known that Harry had carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. If something was wrong at school, he was somehow wrapped up in it. He also had a hero complex. If someone was in trouble, he was going to help them, even if they were rude at hateful towards him. But he had just ended the reign of a dark wizarding terrorist. His nemesis was defeated. Why couldn't he have a normal life now?
"Why do you say that? The nightmare is over. You actually brought peace to our world. Well as much peace as one could bring with defeating the Dork Lord."
Harry smiled. He had never heard anyone refer to Voldemort as the Dork Lord.
"That part is over, yes. The issue is all this new crap that is being thrust on me. Have you been keeping up with the Daily Prophet?"
"You mean you being the Lord of a house?"
"Try the Lord of two Ancient and Most Noble Houses. Apparently, I have to become a career politician. It is expected of me. So much for having a life of my own."
"Why can't you have a normal life? My uncle is a member of the Wizenagamot. They only meet once a month, maybe a few times more if something truly urgent comes up. What are you going to do with the rest of your days?"
"Learn how to become a proper Lord. Apparently, they want me to become a pompous ass."
"I don't see that ever happening. But some good could come from you being part of the old mans club."
"Like what?"
"Change. You could actually bring some real, much needed change."
"I'd love to bring change, but I am only one person. And even with my fame, which I really hate by the way, I can't make any real changes. Not like I want to."
Katie looked at him trying to get a read on his body language. She could tell that he was frustrated and hated where his life was leading him. She could tell he was unhappy.
"Let me ask you this. What would you want to do if you were not being forced into this political role?"
"It's funny, my therapist keeps asking me the same thing." Harry looked directly at Katie for her reaction to his comment about his therapist. No reaction at all. At least not a first. "You don't seem shocked that I am seeing a therapist."
"I'd be more worried if you weren't. You have been through hell. Your life has been one fucked up situation after another. The weight of the world always seems to be on your shoulders. If you weren't getting therapy, I'd be afraid you would explode one day."
"It feels like it sometimes. All this political shit frustrates me. The change I want to make won't happen for a while. Better lives for muggle borns. Most of them won't even be able to get a job in the wizarding world. People like Hermione, who is smarter than most everyone I know, will be looked down on just because she was born to two muggles. Businesses in our world are limited to making potions, becoming healers, or taking up some shitty position in the ministry. It's bullshit."
"I agree. And opening a business seems impossible because Diagon Alley has everything anyone would need in our world. Hell, I'd love to open a café like this one."
Suddenly, Harry started making odd faces and looked to be having a conversation with himself inside his own head. Katie went to ask him a question and he held up a finger to stop her from interrupting him. Then he smiled.
"What else would you want to open if you could? What other kind of shops or businesses do you think are needed?"
"A good pub, maybe even a dance club. Places to go. We are limited to Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade with simple magical shops. Hell a nice restaurant."
"What about an entire alley filled with muggle like businesses, but with a magical twist," asked Harry, a huge grin spreading across his face.
"I've seen this face before during Quidditch. What did I unlock in your brain?"
"Change. Real change. Change that will actually matter. Change that could help people who have other passions besides the crap I mentioned before."
"And where do you plan on finding a place to do all of this?"
"It's already built," said Harry as he sat back in his chair with a smirk.
"Ok. Now I'm confused," said Katie, not sure where Harry was thinking about.
"Right before the Dork Lord's first war, there was a new alley being built close by Diagon Alley. It was part of an economic stimulus effort by the Ministry. It got put on hold once the war started and no one ever went back to see it through. There is a massive area twice as large as Diagon Alley sitting empty, and it is for sale for outrageously cheap."
"So what, you buy the alley and hope people will bring businesses there?"
"Sort of. I buy the alley and open businesses there, and that could encourage others to bring businesses there as well."
"That is going to require a lot of startup capital and a whole lot of luck."
"Katie, if you were to start a business of any kind, what would you want to do?"
"A dance club. I love going to them. The only issue is, they are always so crowded and filled with muggle guys who have the IQ of Crabbe or Goyle."
"Do you think you know what you would need to get a club up and running?"
"Yeah. Money."
"Money not being an issue, could you do it?"
"Night clubs are easy. Good music, drinks, and a good atmosphere."
"Then let's do it."
Katie looked at Harry like he had finally lost his mind. He had to have completely lost his mind. Before she could say the word money again, Harry pulled out his latest statement from Gringotts and showed it to her. He pointed at his current liquid holdings. Her eyes bulged and her mouth dropped.
"You asked me what I wanted to do, and then you mentioned opening a café like this. I'd love to open a fine dining restaurant, where I made the menu. Then you said a night club. What is the biggest issue when it comes to purebloods and muggle borns?"
"Different upbringings?"
"Most purebloods have no idea what amazing shit we have here in the muggle world. So why not bring it to the magical world?"
"You are serious about this?"
"I would have to discuss some things with my Wizenagamot Mentor, because he knows more about the laws in regards to creating businesses and what I would need to do to make this work, and we would have to do a lot of research and planning."
"We," asked Katie in shock that he had seemingly brought her into his plans without even asking.
"Well, I figured you would be all for it. Sorry. I got excited."
"I wouldn't be against it, but I would need to make sure that this won't be a waste of time."
"I agree. Finances are not going to be a problem. Getting people to come to the alley won't be a problem. I guess I could use my fame for something. Damn, that means doing interviews."
"Oh yeah. You will be doing a lot of interviews."
"Katie, be honest with me. Do you think this could work if we get no hang ups in getting the businesses started?"
"I honestly am not sure. There are a lot of muggle born and half-blood students that we went to school with. They would be all for it probably. It's the pure bloods that you would have to convince."
"I know of one pure blood girl who was in my year that would jump at the chance to open her own business. She loves fashion and is actually a really talented designer. She could have a muggle clothing shop."
"A pure blood that loves muggle clothing. You mean they realized that robes are not attractive?"
"Hey, it's a breakthrough. Since we are in a brainstorming mode, what other kinds of businesses do you think would be good?"
Katie sat and thought for a while. She was really catching Harry's excitement for the possibilities that could come from this outrageous and insane idea.
"A few different types of restaurants. A jewelry story would be different. Maybe a few different pubs with different themes. Regular offices for solicitors. Most work from their homes or have to rent an office in the Ministry, which is outrageously priced."
"I think I need to set up a meeting with Lord Greengrass as soon as possible," said Harry.
"Why does that name sound familiar," asked Katie.
"His daughters also went to school with us. Daphne was in my year and Astoria a couple years after me."
"Long blonde hair. Had every guy drooling after her. Never dated anyone."
"Not sure about the never dated anyone part, but yes. That is Daphne. She is the one that loves fashion. Her friend Tracy is just as good as her."
The two friends continued to come up with ideas for another hour before Katie had to return home. Harry told her to be waiting for his message. She wrote down her number on a piece of paper.
"Call me when you set up that meeting," she said as she handed him the paper.
"Looks like I need to go get a mobile," replied Harry.
"I didn't even think about that. You can just owl me."
Harry's face went cold quickly. Sadness rushed over his face. "Hedwig died protecting me last year. I can't bring myself to replace her."
Katie felt like the worst human in the world as soon as she heard that. She didn't know what to say. She could see the tears building up in his eyes. She did the only thing she could think of. She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
"I'm so sorry Harry."
"It's not your fault. You didn't know. I can easily get a mobile today. Never had a need for one before."
She released her hug and smiled. "Well now you do. Call me whenever you need to talk."
"Thanks Katie. Expect to be hearing from me soon."
The two friends went their separate ways. Katie went home to come up with more ideas. Harry went to Grimmuald Place to make a very important Floo call.
So this is my first story ever. It was something I have been thinking about for a while. Hopefully you enjoy it. Please leave me reviews so that I know if I am doing a good enough job.
