The Broken Oath

Chapter 2

She had no idea what to do. Every single person in the camp was seemingly yelling, shouting expletives and generally freaking out. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a bright flash of white and when she turned to look, she noticed that the man that had been sitting next to Chiron was gone. Her eyes widened and she turned back to Percy to ask for an explanation. But when her eyes locked on his face, she nearly flinched at the look of venom she saw.

His green eyes had darkened drastically, his face red from anger and his fists clenched tightly at his sides. She heard him growl before he slammed his foot into the ground roughly, to her surprise she nearly stumbled and fell as the ground began to shake dangerously. She could not believe it, was Percy actually doing this. The entire pavilion shook mightily and the campers began to quiet as they tried and failed to steady themselves.

"ENOUGH." Percy bellowed in such a loud and audible voice that Zoe recoiled, the sound nearly blasting her ear drums to shreds. She was shaken at the power that she could feel in just his voice, She watched as the rest of the campers take a couple steps backward in fear of the son of Poseidon. She was surprised to see this side of him, he had seemed so lighthearted and calm initially when she had met him, but now it was like he was a completely different person. She wasn't so sure if it was a good or bad thing.

"Are you all children?" Percy snarled angrily.

"This is blasphemy." One blonde haired kid screamed. Zoe's eyes snapped to him and he looked away from her, his gaze settling on Percy. "It's impossible. Artemis is a maiden goddess." Percy glared fiercely at him, the kid recoiled but did not back down.

"Clearly not anymore, Malcolm." Percy snapped at him. The kid didn't press at the look of rage that was on Percy's face but someone else did.

"She's lying." Zoe turned and saw a buff girl with scraggly brown hair and red eyes that seemed to glow in the distance. She pointed a finger at Zoe and a sneer crossed her face. "Any minor god could have created that image, she just wants attention." Percy just shook his head in disbelief and Zoe was wondering if he had ever been this angry before because he was kind of terrifying right now.

"Are you blind, Clarisse? She looks exactly like Artemis." Percy said in a slow tone as if he was talking to someone stupid. Zoe turned back to Clarisse and noticed that her face was becoming red with rage.

"You got a problem, Prissy?" She growled angrily and took a step forward. Percy reacted in kind and Zoe became concerned that a brawl was about to break out with all of the angry demigods that were currently squabbling. She sure didn't want Percy getting in any trouble over her. While she was more than sure that Percy could handle himself just fine, there were a lot of angry faces in the crowd right now that were glaring at him.

Zoe watched as a beautiful girl with blonde hair and strikingly grey eyes step in between Percy and the buff girl, Clarrisse. She looked like a stereotypical California girl, deep tan, beautiful and curves in the right places but Zoe could see in her eyes that she was calculating, cunning. Her eyes were analyzing everything about the situation and she turned and locked eyes with her. Zoe could practically see the gears turning in her head as she looked at her.

"Let's all just calm down and relax." She said soothingly. "It's not her fault who her mother is and there certainly isn't anything we can do about it now." Zoe watched in genuine surprise and awe as Percy visibly relaxed at her words. The tension left his shoulders and Zoe felt a small spark of anger rise up in her. For what reason she was not entirely sure, but there was an ugly feeling bubbling in her chest.

Percy's fists opened and Clarisse backed down at her words as well. As a matter of fact, the entire camp seemed to calm and relax at her words. Whoever this blonde haired woman was, she certainly held a lot of sway in this camp. She was an important figure, not just to Percy it seemed but everyone here.

"You are right Annabeth." Zoe's head snapped around to Chiron as he spoke and every single eye in the pavilion turned to the old centaur. "We cannot change the past, she is one of you. Accept her with open arms for her heritage is not her fault. Remember Percy was not supposed to be here either and yet, you all look up to him as a leader." The campers murmured in agreement to his words and Zoe heard Percy mutter under his breath.

"Treated me like shit at first though." Her eyes snapped to his and he looked slightly sheepish. Zoe figured she was not supposed to hear him say that. Although it did start the gears that were churning in her head. Were they going to treat her as bad as they had seemingly treated Percy?

She felt something wet hit her forehead and she looked up at the dark and angry black clouds that were billowing overhead, the sun quickly vanished behind the darkening clouds and the camp grew dark. A few drops of rain began to fall from the sky and she knew that it was about to storm, what she did not expect was every camper, including Percy and Chiron to look up at the sky in surprise. As if rain did not exist to them.

Rain began to pour from the heavens suddenly in waves. A bright flash of lightning tore through the sky so big that she instinctively flinched, as did the other campers. It was quickly followed by the loudest blast of thunder that she had ever heard in her life. She turned to Percy who was just staring up at the sky in disbelief as rain fell down in torrents. Soaking everyone except for him. Zoe had to blink a few times to realize that Percy was somehow staying perfectly dry and she was envious as the rain began to soak her clothes and hair. Zoe watched as all of the campers seemed to be starting to panic, and she finally realized that this was not normal. Something dangerous was going on.

Percy turned quickly to Chiron. "Lord Zeus is not happy," He roared and it was barely audible over the sounds of the storm. "This is bad. This is really bad." Percy yelled over the wind and the old centaur finally reacted. His eyes widening.

"Everyone back to your cabins." After a second no one moved, he stamped his hooves into the ground. "NOW." He bellowed and every camper starting sprinting towards their respective cabins with no regard for each other. Zoe looked at Percy was rooted to her spot and she noticed that there were a couple other campers that had not moved. The girl Annabeth and a blonde haired boy with electric blue eyes, and a beautiful native-american girl who was standing next to him. Close enough that they were almost brushing, Zoe figured the two of them were dating. The girl looked Zoe in the eyes and she was surprised that the girls eyes seemed to shift colors rapidly.

Chiron stared at them. "You all as well Annabeth, Jason, Piper." He said as he looked at each of them individually.

"Something bad is going to happen, Chiron. I can feel it." The man, Jason said.

"Thanks, Jace." Percy said sarcastically, although he was still yelling over the storm. He glared at Percy briefly before their attention all snapped to the bright flash that appeared just a few meters away.

The man from before had appeared. But now, he looked angry. His eyes glowed deep purple and in his hands was a staff, he was glowing with power and Zoe nearly shivered as she stared at him. His eyes trailed from each of the other demigods, to Chiron and finally they rested on her. Without a word, he snapped his fingers and she yelped as chains wrapped around her wrists and ankles, forcing her to her knees. She turned to Percy and his eyes widened in alarm.

"What the Tartarus, Dionysus?" Percy growled and the man turned his gaze to Percy and glared at him fiercely, but the son of Poseidon did not back down. Instead his hand jammed into his pocket and Zoe wondered how that was going to help at all.

It finally clicked, that the man before her was a god, an Olympian in fact. The god of wine and Zoe was shaking as she realized she was obviously in quite some trouble.

"Watch yourself, Perseus." Dionysus growled as he made a step towards her but Percy stepped in front of her and the god glared at him fiercely. "You may have earned my respect, but do not think I won't strike you down for disobeying an order of the gods." He glowed a little and Zoe watched the others shift uneasily, noticing that Percy was the only one that was going to jump to her defense.

"What order?" Percy asked and Dionysus sighed, his anger deflating only slightly.

"Zeus has ordered her to be brought in front of the council, she is a forbidden child. One that should have never existed." Dionysus explained, Zoe watched as Percy's fists clenched tightly again and she realized he was getting angry.

"Neither was I, and I saved all of your thrones." Percy snarled in return and the god sneered in return.

"And for that you have earned all of our respect, but I give you one last chance. Stand down," Dionysus snarled with such force that Zoe wanted to shrivel into a ball, but nevertheless Percy stood tall. "Or you will be struck down for disobeying an order from the King of Olympus." He threatened.

"You know what will happen, Zeus will kill her just for being alive." Zoe's eyes widened, Zeus was going to kill her? She frantically tried to break free from the chains but she was immobile. Percy tried to reason with the Olympian, his human side. However it was no use.

"Last chance, Perseus." Dionysus said. Percy turned to Annabeth, Jason and Piper and saw that none of them were coming to his defense either.

"Jason? Annabeth, Piper? Come on guys, help me here?" Zoe watched as they all just shook there heads and Percy stared at them in disbelief, particularly Annabeth. "Are you guys serious?" He snarled angrily and the ground shook slightly as it had before.

"Can't defy an order from Olympus." Jason told him. "You'll die too, Percy stand down." Percy just growled in response and looked Annabeth in the eyes.

"Wise girl?" She refused to look Percy in the eyes, and after a moment she shook her head.

"I'm sorry, Percy." She whispered and Percy just snorted.

"After everything we've been through, Tartarus and back, fighting a Primordial goddess, Titans and Giants, you won't stand with me against this injustice? Zeus is going to kill her." He spat at Annabeth. She recoiled as if he had struck her. His words were like venom and clearly she had never heard him speak to her like this before.

"Percy, please. I'm sorry." She whispered. "There's just some fights you can't win." Percy looked at her stunned. "This is my home, we saved the gods, but even we have limits." Percy frowned deeply at her, his eyes shining with betrayal as he looked at the three of them. Zoe couldn't tell what was happening exactly, she had no idea what the story was between them, but Percy was clearly upset at her for siding against him. Not that she really blamed him, she could definitely tell there was something between them. But now, it seemed fragile, like glass. One more hit and it would break.

"GO." He bellowed and they flinched at his rage. "LEAVE." He pulled a pen from his pocket and before anyone could react he uncapped it. To Zoe's immense surprise a beautiful glowing bronze sword burst forth. Three feet long and glinting dangerously in the darkness.

"Percy, don't do this." Annabeth begged.

Percy just stared at her coldly. Without a word he turned his back to her and faced Dionysus, the god of wine looking surprised that Percy would dare challenge him to a fight.

"Perseus." Dionysus said with an edge to his voice. Zoe watched as tears filled Annabeth's eyes, and let Jason drag her away without another word. Clearly they did not want to get in between what was about to happen between Dionysus and Percy.

Zoe felt a surge of warmth spread through her as she realized Percy was going to stand up to her from everyone, even the gods, when no one else would. Even against who she assumed was his girlfriend.

"Lord Dionysus." Percy said respectfully, surprising both Zoe and the Olympian. "I don't want to fight you, but this wrong. Can you not see that?" He questioned and Dionysus lowered his gaze for just a moment.

"Perseus, Artemis is a goddess sworn to maidenhood. This oath..." He paused momentarily. "She swore before Zeus, before the fates and now it has been broken. The consequences are dire, and could be disastrous for Olympus as a whole. That being said, it is not fair to the young girl, however, I cannot go against a direct order from my father." At those words, Percy's eyes seemed to hardened and he readied himself into a battle stance. Zoe wondered if he was suicidal, clearly there was no way he would be able to take on a god. Right?

There was just one thing, he seemed confident. There was no fear in his stance, his eyes or on his face. Almost like he has done this before. Zoe badly wanted to here about his past stories because right now, he was her hero. Willing to die for her, no one in her entire life had cared for her this much, and they had just met recently. She turned and observed Dionysus' face, and she was surprised. He seemed almost, nervous?

"It is still wrong, and I must do what is right." Percy stated.

Dionysus looked at him, respect in his eyes. "You are a true hero, the likes of which the world has never seen. I am sorry, but I must." Percy nodded at his words and Zoe was confused. She had never seen two people about to fight show this much respect or honor to each other. Why were they even fighting at all then?

They stared at each other for a few moments, waiting to see who was going to make the first move. It seemed like forever to Zoe as the two stared at each other, which one of them was going to break and attack first. Then Zoe saw it, Dionysus' stance shifted ever so slightly, Percy noticed and tensed. The god of wine raised his hand so fast it was a blur and a blast of purple energy expanded outwards and shot at Percy with such speed Zoe thought for sure that whatever that was would catch Percy off guard.

Except, somehow Percy was faster. Her jaw dropped as he stepped to the side so quickly it was as if the earth itself had moved him. The ground rumbled slightly as Percy lunged forward with a thunderous strike. Dionysus looked surprised as Percy dodged his godly power with such speed, but he recovered quickly and raised his staff to catch Percy's strike. With a thunderous clang the blade met the staff, a small shock wave of power nearly knocked Zoe flat onto her back.

What happened next, Zoe could not even describe if she wanted to. The two moved so fast that they were a blur of speed, neither giving an inch and each strike was met and countered with beautifully. She had thought that the Olympian gods were really strong and powerful. Yet, Percy was able to go toe to toe with an Olympian. Was Percy really that powerful? She thanked her lucky stars that Percy was on her side and defended her. She felt a surge of something she had never felt before.

Each time their weapons met, the entire area surrounding them shook. She watched their faces and saw the look of concentration on Percy's face, he was calm, composed and calculated. His only thoughts must have been, attack, counter and defend. It was like he was a robot, he had no concern as he fought Dionysus. On the other hand, she observed the god of wine and there was a startled look of surprise on his face. He knew that he should be able to defeat Percy, but for some reason he couldn't. With every second and strike that he did not defeat Percy, he seemed to get even more worried and concerned. Zoe had no idea how strong a god should be, but surely stronger than one of their children. Right?

Dionysus suddenly roared and slammed his staff into the ground, a shock wave of power rolled off of him and Percy stumbled backward. He barely had time to react as Dionysus rushed forward and swept his staff out, trying to sweep him off his feet. He jumped upwards just in time but Dionysus was fast. He brought his staff up and slammed the butt into Percy's chest. Zoe grimaced as she heard an audible crack. She knew for sure that some of his ribs were broken. He fell to the ground roughly, a grimace on his face. But somehow, he recovered and rose to his feet. How? Zoe had no idea, there was no way she would have been able to fight like that for what had to have been at least twenty minutes and still be able to keep going. Especially with the injuries he had just sustained.

Percy scowled and Zoe could see blood dribbling from his mouth, his teeth red as he growled angrily. Dionysus looked at him with grudging admiration before he was a blur of speed to try and continue his onslaught. Percy meanwhile closed his eyes, his left foot shot back and slammed into the ground. The ground rippled and Zoe watched in awe as the ground beneath Dionysus shot up and sent the god of wine flying into the air, his staff going in the opposite direction.

He grunted and hit the ground, slowly he rose. Was that golden blood? Zoe wondered as a golden liquid dripped from several spots on Dionysus' body. He raised his hand and his staff shot back to him and he scowled at Percy who finally reopened his eyes, a slight smirk on his face as the two stared each other down once again. This time instead of charging, Percy raised his free hand and tendrils of water formed out of the rain and lashed out like whips.

Dionysus' eyes widened and he moved quickly, trying to avoid the lassos of water. He charged Percy, hoping to catch him by surprise as he was concentrated on the water. As he was about ten feet away, one tendril of water finally met its mark and wrapped itself around the gods ankle. He grunted in surprise and slipped. That was when Percy struck, he rushed forwards and Dionysus had no time to react as he brought his bronze blade down towards the gods neck.

Somehow, he raised his staff just enough and Percy's blade glanced and missed his neck. Instead slicing deep into his shoulder blade. Dionysus cried out in shock and pain, his body stiffening as he looked to see how deep the blade had pierced. It was about half a foot deep and golden ichor was already flowing in waves out of the wound. Zoe just watched stunned as Percy had seemingly bested a god, especially one that was an Olympian. It just didn't seem possible to Zoe, the way Percy had talked about some of these beings, surely they would be more powerful than a demigod. Only she had never met Percy or seen what he has done.

He pulled the blade free and Dionysus gasped as he did so, Percy gave him no reprieve as he struck again. Driving his blade into his arm that held his staff, the god shrieked again and dropped his staff. He roared in pain. Percy took a step towards the now defenseless god of wine. His face twitching as he did so, his free hand coming up and lightly rested on his wounded ribs. Zoe wondered what Percy was going to do next, could you even kill a god? She wondered.

Percy kicked Dionysus in the chest and knocked him flat onto his back. Before Percy could do anything else, Dionysus' form started to flicker and glow. Percy tensed and he turned away, his voice blasting Zoe's ears.

"LOOK AWAY!"

All she saw was white light begin to fill her senses. She grunted as a weight slammed into her. Instinctively, her eyes closed as she fell onto her back. When she reopened her eyes Percy was standing above her, blood on his chin and a grimace on his face. Nevertheless he picked her up effortlessly and steadied her so that she would not fall despite the chains. She looked towards where Dionysus had been and all she saw was a charred spot on the ground. She raised her eyebrows in question and opened her mouth to speak but Percy spoke first.

"Come we must go quickly, more will come." She just tilted her head and jangled the chains at him. He nodded and brought his blade up quickly, Zoe flinched, expecting the strike to cut right through her. Instead all she heard was a clang and she felt the weight of the chains fall off her wrists and arms and fall uselessly to the ground. She opened her eyes and glared at Percy as he did the same thing to the chains around her ankles.

"Next time, warn me. I thought you were going to cut me in half." She yelled at him. A ghost of a smirk crossed his face.

"Come on, we must go quickly." He reached his hand out and grabbed hers, her face burned when suddenly the world around her vanished.

Hello. I've been sitting on this chapter a while now. Doesn't seem like the first chapter was very popular but I like the story so I am going to continue. This could be interesting to me, please let me know what you think.

Side note, most of the stories I read on here have Dionysus as a coward or a piece of shit. I felt the two of them came to respect one another at the end of The Last Olympian. So I think the two of each other would be much more civilized. Hopefully it was realistic, I don't want to fall into the normal stereotypes of the gods. They're arrogant for sure, but they're going to have character and not be one dimensional like so many stories I've read.

Furthermore, Zeus wants Zoe dead. Not surprising but it also might not be for reasons you expect.

Hope you enjoyed. Thanks for reading and sticking with me through all these years.
