Empty-prompt for Sam and Jack ship day 2020.

Jack hates when his bed is empty. Okay not empty. He's in it. He ought to be used to sleeping alone. He did it for years after the divorce.

But it feels empty. He rolls over on his back and stares at the ceiling. He's not comfortable. He rolls over again and stares at the empty side of the bed.

He misses Sam.

Before he realizes it he's listening to her phone ring.

"Carter."

"I'm lonely."

Sam sighs. "I'm fine, Jack. So's Cassie." She misses him too, but her assignment at Groom Lake is important.

"Can't you come home?" he whines. He winces hearing himself. A highly decorated general sounding like a teenager.

Sam chuckles. "I could, but do you really want me playing with explosives in the mountain?"

Jack sits up so fast he bangs his head on the headboard. "OW! Explosives? What are you blowing up Colonel Carter?"

"That's classified General." She laughs at his muttered curses. "What's really wrong, Jack?"

"I hate sleeping alone."

Sam nods. They are still working out their relationship, but sleeping apart is harder than either expected. She never missed Pete the way she misses Jack.

"I'm thinking about getting a dog." He says.

"Seems like an overreaction to sleeping alone, Jack." Sam answers him.

"Very funny."

Sam giggles over the line. "Yes, I thought so."

He sighs heavily. "What I wanted to ask, was will you help me pick out a shelter dog?"

"Why do I think you already have a dog in mind?"

He shrugs. "I've been looking." He answers. "I emailed you the ones I like the best."

Sam smiles. "Of course."

She knows since she left for Nevada, Teal'c went to the Free Jaffa and Daniel is going to Atlantis, more than Jack's bed feels empty for him.

"Thanks, Carter."

"I love you too, Jack."

He chuckles. "Always."

After they hang up, his bed still feels empty. But he's more comfortable now.
