When the Past Comes Back

Sequel to Broken Five years after they married Barry and Caitlin have settled into their family life. But someone from the past comes back threating to destroy their life and family. Add in a failed particle accelerator experiment and their lives will never be the same.

Prolog

Hunter Zolomon stood in the courtroom as the verdict was read. Guilty on all charges. He turned and noticed her in the back of the room. He sent her a glare. He noticed the man next to her. That stupid CSI that she always was with. He would make them and their friends pay for this. She will wish that she never messed with him.

Three and a half years later

Barry Allen watched his wife sleep. She had been working really hard lately. It was less then a month until the launch of the STAR labs particle accelerator. Everyone in the labs were working long hours. Caitlin had been only getting about five hours of sleep a night. He knew she hated not being there for their kids as much as she wanted. But Dr. Wells had promised her a month long vacation once the project was done.

One month later

Caitlin was working in the cryogenics lab right after the particle accelerator was turned on. It had been nearly an hour since it had turned on and everything had gone to plan. The next thing she knew the building was rocked with an explosion. She was knock to the floor and slipped unconscious as the liquid nitrogen tank broke spill over her and a wave of dark matter spread from over the building and the rest of the city.

Across town at CCPD Barry was working in the crime lab His mom was babysitting his and Caitlin's kids that night. Danielle or Dani as they called her was two and a half and their son Charles or Charlie was seven months old. He had the TV on keeping an eye on the coverage of the launch of the particle accelerator. He glanced out the window noticing that it was starting to rain. He got up and went to close the skylight cover when he saw the explosion come from the location of STAR labs. His hands were still on the chains when a bolt of lightning came through the skylight hitting him and sending him into a shelf full of chemicals.

Six weeks later

Caitlin woke in a hospital bed. She looked around but it didn't look like any hospital she had ever seen before. In fact it looked more like one of the medical labs at her mother's company. She saw Alex Danvers looking over something on a tablet. She groaned and Alex turned to face her.

"Caitlin, your awake! Let me call your mom ok? I know you are wondering what happened. I will explain later ok?" said Alex

Caitlin nodded her throat feeling to dry to speak. Alex pick up the phone in the lab and hit the button that would connect her with Dr. Carla Tannhouser. After yelling at the assistant that answered Alex was put through.

"Dr. Tannhouser, Caitlin is awake. See you in a few minutes." Said Alex

Alex hung up and turned back to her friend.

"Ok I know that you have questions. But first do you want ice chips or to try sipping some water?" asked Alex

"Ice." Caitlin choked out.

Alex smiled and went to the small ice maker in the room and put some ice chips in a small cup. After letting some ice melt down her throat Caitlin spoke softly.

"What happened? Where is Barry?"

"The particle accelerator exploded. Cisco and I found you in the cryogenic lab. You had been knocked out and the liquid nitrogen tank broke open and spilled on you. Combined with the dark matter released in the explosion there is now a mutation in your DNA. The fact that you weren't killed is a miracle. As for Barry, he is in a coma in the room next door. Your mom had both of you brought here. His dad and a couple other trusted scientists have been helping her and me treat the two of you. He was hit by lightning that night." Said Alex

Just then Carla walked and went over to her daughter and hugged her.

"Caitlin, I am so glad you are awake. Once I we get a new blood sample and your vitals you can go next door and see Barry. I already called Nora to let her know you are awake. She is going to inform the rest of your friends." Said Carla

"Other than being cold I feel fine mom." Said Caitlin

"Well the cold is the result of the mutation in your DNA. It caused some physical changes in you as well." Said Carla

At Caitlin's look Carla handed her daughter a mirror. Looking at her reflection Caitlin noticed her hair was streaked with white, her skin was paler than normal, her lips had a purple/blue tint and her eyes were rimed with an icy blue.

"How did this happen?" asked Caitlin

"I don't know. But I will figure it out with your help honey. Now let's get a blood sample and then get you to your husband and see if you can wake him." Said Carla

It was nearly a month later that Barry woke from his coma with his wife by his side. They had discovered that after Caitlin had woken up that her physical appearance returned mostly to normal after a few days. But that was also when she first shot an icy mist from her hands when a lab tech snuck up on her and touched her. After Barry woke it was discovered that he had gained super speed and now needed to eat over 10,000 calories a day or he would pass out. The two spent the next two months learning to control their new powers and spending time with their kids.
