A/B/O Universe with The Outsiders. In this fanfic, this will be the re-telling of The Outsiders only the gang, the socs, and everyone else are Alphas, Betas or Omegas. This is seen as normal in society where some, or all people have defined biological roles based on a hierarchical system, with the terms originating from animal behaviour research. I haven't seen many of these types of fics in this fandom and it's kinda sad; I love ABO fics. So, I felt it was time to write one. I hope you all enjoy.

Chapter 1 Paul Newman and a ride home.
Like many pups his age, Ponyboy Curtis aspired to be a big, strong alpha when he grew up. Not that he had a problem with Omegas. But from Ponyboy's upbringing, Alphas were strong, brave and tuff. That's what Ponyboy wanted to be: tuff. Tuff enough to fight in rumbles with knives and chains, tuff enough to drive with Soda and Two-Bit on the corners of Texas and drag race; at least tuff enough to see a movie alone without fear of being jumped. Ponyboy was a greaser. Greasers get jumped by Socs, the rich kids from the South Side of town. Ponyboy had enough problems to deal with since his parents died last winter; he was skittish that every time he left the hosue he'd come back and some social worker would be there with their arms crossed and ready to haul him away.
Steve Randle, his brother's annoying Beta-wanna-be-Alpha friend, often made the claim Ponyboy was doomed to be an Omega because of how much he was a worry wart.
"Not an Omega." Ponyboy huffed. Ponyboy had no problems with Omegas, honest. It was what would happen after the fact he was worried about. Ponyboy had heard tales of Female and Male Omegas presenting and their parents going overboard protective of them. Ponyboy thought long and hard about the world he lived in. It sure was strange. Alphas, Betas and Omegas. All functioning members of society working hand-in-hand to make the world a better place to live. Alphas, known for their intense personalities, authoritative tone and brave statures.
Ponyboy's Dad was an Alpha, as was Darry and Sodapop, his older brothers. And Dallas Winston, and Johnny Cade. Ponyboy recalled his father being a loving and fun Dad when he was alive, he'd always play when asked no matter how tired he was from work; but he was also firm and rules were always followed under his watch. Darry wasn't really like his Dad in that aspect anymore, he worked too hard to be fun. Sodapop was the total opposite, he was all fun and no rules, which baffled anyone who met him and was told he was an Alpha. It was so. . . . unnatural to be so lenient. However, he had his moments where he could be stern if he was annoyed or stressed, which didn't happen often.
The Pup stopped walking, glancing both ways before crossing the street and going back to his thoughts.
Then again, Johnny Cade wasn't the "normal" Alpha at all either. Ponyboy shuddered.
Poor Johnny got beat on by his dad, his mom and jumped by Socs the most. Earlier he was clobbered by one with a bunch of rings and was bloody and teary eyed when Darry and Soda rescued him.
If Ponyboy could describe the cliche of Alphas, it would be Dallas Winston. Cunning, angry and boiling with boredom and the need to destroy someone or something. Dallas frightened him a little bit. The way Dallas looked while in a rumble or pissing off the police was always with the same satisfied smirk. Dallas grew up in New York and even went to prison once. Dallas was a hell raising Alpha who wouldn't take disrespect from anyone. Unlike his Dad and Darry whom while firmly placed themselves as someone to respect, they had a charm that made you want to respect them, Dallas would beat you black and blue if you had a second thought on the matter.
Then you had Betas. Betas, according to Ponyboy's textbooks, aren't a mix of the two and have their own characteristics; Ponyboy would disagree. Two-Bit Matthews was fun and happy-go-lucky like Sodapop and a real class clown. Steve Randle was a wanna'be Alpha. Nothing got on his nerves more than knowing he wasn't an Alpha. In Ponyboy's opinion, they had nothing to worry about. Male Betas can't get pregnant, but females can. So that was one worry gone. Another thing is Alphas tend to respect a Beta more than an Omega in the work force; Betas don't crack under pressure as an Omega could. Betas are also a majority of the population in Tulsa with Alphas right behind them. As far as Ponyboy is concerned, he's only known maybe five Omegas his whole life and one was his mother.
He frowned. He missed his mother dearly. She was so warm and gentle, her curly golden hair always so soft to nuzzle into when she hugged him tightly.
She made being an Omega look easy. Ponyboy thought.
Omegas in general are perceived as precious and dainty creatures in need of protection and utter care. What separated them from Betas or Alphas, was they are naturally capable of childbirth. Omegas are prone to being ill quicker than an Alpha or Beta, they are also at a risk of danger; Alphas claim Omegas as their own. Being claimed means being mates for life and that scared Ponyboy.
Not that he had anything to really be worried about. He hadn't presented yet. Though this did worry Darry. Ponyboy was a late bloomer.
"GREASER!" A chant came from a Mustang that sped by. Ponyboy frowned. He knew he shouldn't have gone alone, but Sodapop and Darry were working, Dallas was in the cooler, it would be a cold day in hell if he asked Steve to hang out and Two-Bit often gets them kicked out because of his antics. Ponyboy had tried looking for Johnny at first, but couldn't find him right away. Picking up his pace, Ponyboy scurried home. He was almost there when he heard the roar of the Mustang from earlier that cornered him in the lot.
"Need a haircut greaser?" one Soc growled, his fangs showing prominently.
"No." Ponyboy backed up into another Soc he hadn't known was behind him before they all tackled him to the ground. Ponyboy screamed. The head Soc of the gang, an Alpha, covered his ears before demanding, "Shut him up!"
A rag was stuffed into Pony's mouth but he still cried out for help.
"How about we cut here, right here above the neck." the heavy Soc on top of him chuckled as he sliced on Ponyboy's neck, causing the puppy to cry in pain. Ponyboy was sure he was going to die before the Soc on his chest glanced up a moment and scurried off of him. All of the Socs made a run for it. Ponyboy recognized Dallas Winston leaping over him, following him was Two-Bit, then Steve and Darry.
Ponyboy went to sit up as Sodapop slide next to him on the gravel. "Pony-oh Ponyboy, Puppy are you okay?" He asked, worried.
Ponyboy nodded and winced when Sodapop ripped off the bottom of his long flannel to press against the wound Ponyboy had. "Oh, you're bleedin' like a struck pig." the Puppy whined. He was sure he'd look like a freak now. "Hey," Sodapop's tender voice called him back to reality. "They ain't gonna hurt you no more," Sodapop promised.
Before Pony could say anything, Darry approached him and hauled the puppy to his feet.
"Ponyboy, are you okay?!" Darry asked, his cold eyes not matching his voice.
"Yeah, I'm fine, Darry. Stop shaking me." The Alpha was too rough with the shivering Pup. Immediately, Darry stopped. Not before frowning. "Why are you walking alone?" He demanded.
Ponyboy glanced at the ground. "I went and saw a movie. I wasn't asking for trouble-"
"Don't matter, Pup." Darry crossed his arms, "Socs out there don't care if you're shinnin' your shoes, they'll jump you regardless long' as yer' alone."
The small Pup lowered his head in shame. He hated it when Darry made him feel small, useless and weak. Ponyboy was a Greaser. Greasers are supposed to be able to fend for themselves. Sodapop nudged his older brother, telling him to leave Ponyboy alone. "The pup's shaken up enough, Darry. But Puppy, promise me you won't walk home alone again? Especially since you're at the age you present soon."
Darry's eyes lit up. "That's right.. . . Given the circumstances, you just reminded me how much danger you put yourself in. Get in the house."
Ponyboy glared at Sodapop who shrugged apologetically. The two brothers followed their Alpha, the gang not far behind. Sodapop brought Ponyboy into the bathroom to clean him up as Dallas plopped on the couch, hogging it. Two-bit turned on Mickey Mouse while Steve raided the fridge. Johnny sat next to Two-Bit, his worried face keeping a glance at the ground.
"I swear, that pup doesn't use his head." Darry mumbled, showing Steve out of his way while yanking the plate of raw meat from his hands, replacing it with an apple.
Steve glared. "That's cause your second Pup-brother is a-" The Beta shut his mouth when Darry glared. Steve once had the misfortune of calling Darry "All brawn and no brain" once and the Alpha nearly tore him to shreds. Darry may complain about his brothers, but doesn't doesn't take smack from anyone who chimes in. Steve bit into his apple before retreating to the living room. Darry took the plate of meat and returned it to the kitchen. Honestly, he had no idea why Steve tried to act like an Alpha. He wasn't one.
Sodapop and Ponyboy entered the living room and Darry signaled for Ponyboy to follow him out to the porch.
Darry sat on the porch bench while Ponyboy jumped up on the porch ledge in front of him. "Look, Pup. . . I know I'm hard on you. But it's only because I worry, Ponyboy."
The Puppy nodded, scratching at the bandage Sodapop put on his neck.
"I don't want the State taking you away. They can try for Sodapop, I know they threaten to take him too, but we both know that he'll get off easier cause he's an Alpha, but puppy, you're not. You haven't presented yet. And God forbid you turn into an Omega and the State feels that we aren't fit, ya' know?"
Ponyboy felt a lump in his throat.
Why did those words hurt so much?
"Yeah. . . hey, Darry, I know you're still mad at me, but can Johnny, Dallas and I hang out tonight? I'll stay out of trouble."
Darry's stern glance faded to neutral. He sighed, nodding. "Sure, but you're back by ten." Ponyboy forced a smile.
The wind outside grew colder as dusk was upon the orange skies of Tulsa. All would not be as quiet as it once was.
