Chapter 22: Escape from Orb
The Battle of Orb raged on as numerous Orb and Alliance ships were sunk. The Archangel floated beside the Orb naval fleet where one of them was sunk. "Helldarts, fire!", Winter ordered, and the Archangel launched a volley of missiles on those launched by Alliance ships, but several managed to score hits on the beach, destroying several M1s and allied personel on that area.
"Well, that sucked..", Roman chimed at seeing the unfortunate destruction.
"Not all can be saved, that's the cruel truth of war.", Ironwood agreed with him.
On the ground, a Strike Dagger attempted to slash Octavia's M1 Astray but backed away in time using its thrusters. The Strike Dagger continued its assault but its arm carrying its beam saber was blown off by an allied M1 Astray. "Ember!", Gwen called out before another shot from her beam rifle destroyed the Strike Dagger. Another Dagger attempted to slash Nebula's M1 but she ducked in time and stabbed the Strike Dagger's chest, destroying it.
"These guys are still Rookies, are they?", Taiyang asked the Observers before them on seeing their performance.
"They're test pilots actually, and this is just their first time in a real battle.", Aeralyn told him.
"Might as well give them some experience in the field. That will help them at their skill.", Ironwood mused, seeing how experience would often outrank everything.
Qrow growled as the Strike descended on the ground and fired its Agni beam cannon, easily destroying three Strike Daggers who were firing at him. A rain of missiles were converging to the Buster's position where two were destroyed by its beam rifles.
"Take this!", Sun shouted as the Buster launched its own missiles and combined its rifles to form an Anti-Armor Shotgun and fires an powerful blast, destroying dozens of missiles into the air.
"Man, Uncle Qrow and Sun were having the time of their lives.", Yang remarked at seeing how they were kicking ass with their mobile suits.
"Being a good guy suits me more, no?", the monkey Faunus asked.
The Justice Gundam floated in front of the Freedom after blocking an attack that would have surely destroyed the mobile suit, and apparently this only angered Cinder further.
"Who the hell are you?!", Cinder angrily asked for Ren's interference. The Raider changed to its MA form and flew towards the Crimson Gundam.
"Eh, it's one of those funny-looking mobile suits", Emerald gleefully mused before joining Cinder.
"I really hope Ren would be helping Jaune this time", Blake said, worried about his father's orders to him.
"Ice Queen struck a nerve at him, so I think he'll be fine", Yang re-assured her, causing Weiss to scoff at her for the nickname.
Jaune's monitor beeped in alarm as the Raider and Forbidden closed in firing their weapons, forcing both the Freedom and Justice to dodge their attacks.
"This is ZAFT Special Forces. Lie Ren", the pilot of Justice introduced himself through Jaune's channel, whose eyes widened in surprise at hearing his friend's voice once more. "Can you hear me, Freedom? Jaune Yamato, right?", Ren asked the pilot, who remained perplexed at his presence.
"Ren?"
Cinder lets out an angered growl as the Raider fired its railguns, forcing the Justice to dodge as the Raider who went back to its MS form and aimed its beam cannons towards the crimson Gundam. The Justice held one of its beam sabers to combine it with the other, forming a double-bladed saber while deflecting the black Gundam's shots, to which the Justice swooped in and attacked the Raider, who parried its saber with its main weapon.
"Go get'em, Renny!", Nora cheered for her best friend on the screen as the rest of Beacon's students were fascinated by his machine.
"Double-bladed laser swords, backpacks that can be used as carriers, and in a crimson-colored scheme. What's more to add?!", Ruby squealed with starry eyes at Ren's machine, now wishing that she was the pilot of that machine.
Jaune scowled at seeing the Justice and the Freedom unsheathed its beam saber. "What are you doing here?!", Jaune angrily questioned Ren. The white machine attempted slash the Forbidden, who got close to Ren but the green Gundam dodged in time. "Is ZAFT planning to stick its nose to this fight too?!"
The Justice evaded several beam shots coming from the Raider, who zoned past him. "I have no orders regarding this battle.", Ren informed the Freedom's pilot.
Emerald mildly growled in glee as the Forbidden fired its beam cannon towards the Freedom, who managed to dodge the attack. "The reason for my participation...", Ren began while the Freedom dodged the Raider's mace.
"Is my decision alone!", he finished as he forced the Raider from the Freedom with the Justice's saberstaff.
Nora and Phyrra's smile brightened as they heard his declaration, having chosen his own will rather than the word of his father's, indicating that he had chosen to help Jaune rather than revenge this time.
Ozpin, Glynda and Ironwood could not help but smile in pride for his student's own decision to help his friend rather than fulfill his duty, a trait that determines a Huntsman and a soldier. Jaune looked at Ren and smiled at his alternate self's declaration, knowing that despite being the silent type, Ren valued friendship beyond anything else.
'Ren...', Jaune thought for his former adversary.
"I don't know who you are, but you're going down too!", Cinder declared as the Raider fired its beam cannons towards the crimson Gundam. Ren scowled as he evaded the shots and moved towards the black mobile suit.
The Freedom fired at the Forbidden twice with its beam rifle, twice his shots were deflected once more. Jaune scowled at this while Emerald confidently smirked at him as the Freedom continued to fire at the green mobile suit.
"What do we have here? Another one?", Mercury gleefully wondered, with the blue Gundam open firing with its two huge cannons from its backpack towards the red mobile suit. The Justice dodged, but Mercury's shot nearly hit the Raider in the process, causing Cinder to curse at him.
"Mercury! You punk!"
Cinder glared at Mercury for that stunt who put his hands up in defense. "You were in the way, how am I suppose to know?", he sassed at her.
The Freedom and the Forbidden also dodged the stray shots but Emerald didn't say anything.
"Why does it look like that I'm used to this?", Emerald questioned at her alternate self's behaviour, though she wouldn't expect anything less from Mercury of all people.
The battle between the five mobile suits in the air caused the Buster, Strike and the three Astray pilots to be stunned at their performance. "What's going on up there?", Qrow wondered.
At the Orb headquarters, two operators were confused at the sudden presence of the Justice. "Is that another Alliance mobile suit?"
"No, it's backing the Freedom!", causing Saphron to gasp in surprise at the sight.
"That's my Renny there!", Nora cheered for her teammates.
The Calamity jumped in amidst of several wrecked M1 Astrays. "Ha! Mind if I play as well?", he sarcastically asked while open firing at the duo, forcing Ren and Jaune to divert their attention to him.
"Don't butt in, Mercury!", Cinder called out while the Forbidden floated beside him, with Emerald cackling at their banter.
The Calamity landed towards an unfortunate Orb vessel, blowing up its bridge in the process. "Shut up!", Mercury snarked at Cinder and continued to fire towards them.
The Justice dodged a beam before one went close to the Forbidden who used its Geschmeidig Panzer system to curve the shots, and it went close to Cinder.
"Emerald! You bitch!", Cinder cursed at her teammate while said girl only smirked.
"Why am I being treated like a sort of ragdoll here?", Cinder asked in bewilderment before she glared at her two teammates, who only pointed their fingers at one another on who's fault is it.
"That has got to be the most likely fatal act of trolling", Neptune mused on seeing Emerald almost killing Cinder almost as if she was playing a harmless prank at her.
"Three man teams in a nutshell man", Sun concluded for him.
The Justice fired its machine guns located from its FATUM backpack, with the Forbidden shielding itself from the shots while the Freedom loomed in and fired its Xiphias railguns towards the Forbidden, forcing Emerald back as she scoffed at the impact. As she regained control of her machine, the Justice loomed and gave a flying kick onto the Forbidden, knocking the green Gundam off balance.
"That's the way!", Roman excitedly called out of the sheer amazement of the screen.
"Show'em who's boss! Go JNPR!", Nora cheered further at seeing Jaune and Ren's coordination as a dynamic duo.
"They are proving themselves quite the pair, are they?", Glynda complimented as Ozpin could not help but nod in agreement.
The Raider again fired its railguns towards the Justice where the Freedom backed up and fired its Balaena beam cannons. The Raider dodged while transforming to its MS form and launched its mace, only for the two mobile suits to split up, where the Freedon activated one of its beam sabers.
"What?!", Cinder called out, mildly frightened. The Raider dodged the white mobile suit, only to be kneed by the Justice on the chest.
"Take this!", Mercury called out as the Calamity open fired at the duo once more.
"Ren!"
"Above you!", the ZAFT pilot called out as the Forbidden descended from above to land a slash with its scythe. The two dodged and the Freedom fired with its beam rifle once more. Emerald scoffed at his attempt but not before she noticed the Justice's FATUM backpack heading towards her. The Forbidden evaded the remote-controlled backpack but the Freedom appeared in front, firing its Xiphias railguns on the waist.
"That's it?", Emerald asked, not convinced that she would have died early.
"The Forbidden along with the Raider and Calamity are equipped with Trans-phase armor, so railgun damage isn't so significant. If it were beams, then you're done for.", Flit explained as Emerald lets out a sigh of relief, not wanting to see herself get killed too early.
Dozens of missiles were then launched by the Alliance fleet, where the Archangel destroyed scores of them in the air with its CIWs. "20 degrees to port, we'll hit the fleet on the left!", Winter ordered the crew.
Meanwhile, a large group of Strike Daggers were continously firing to none other than the Strike, who dashed its way to the group, anti-ship sword in hand. "You're not getting past me!", Qrow declared.
The Strike proceded to slice off three Strike Dagger's onto their torsos and waists, while the Buster used its combined sniper rifle to destroy three Daggers with a single blast of a swipe, which are followed by spectacular explosions behind the two mobile suits. "You're gonna need more than just numbers!", Sun snarked at their handiwork.
"Looking good there, kid.", Qrow complimented the monkey faunus, who gave a toothy grin.
"You said it!"
"Those old tricks won't work this time!", Octavia barked at the hostile mobile suits as her M1 joined to that of Nebula. "Nebula!"
"I'm all right!", the girl re-assured her as they kept on firing on to several Strike Daggers.
At the Alliance fleet, Arthur Watts sat in complete boredom, wondering why they haven't the job yet. "We haven't taken over their headquarters yet?", he wondered. "Isn't that kind of strange?"
Admiral Cordova looked behind her and looked at him with a void expression. "It seems those three mobile suits you were so proud of, haven't been doing their job as expected.", she told him to which he scowled at the implication.
The Freedom and the Justice continued to fight against the three mobile suits where the Raider flew past the Freedom. "Finishing move!", Cinder confidently barked as the Raider launched its Zorn cannon from its mouth, where the Freedom used its shield to deflect it.
Under the white mobile suit, was the Justice who returned fire with its Fortis beam cannons where the Raider dodged, where it again evaded another beam, this time it came from the Calamity, its own teammate.
"Mercury?!", Cinder called out, perplexed at what he did.
"You're getting on my nerves!", Mercury sarcastically answered before the Calamity jumped and fired its beam cannons, this time to the Forbidden who deflected the shots. "Same goes for you, Emerald!"
The Freedom and the Justice floated with both pilots in complete disbelief at what these three were doing. "These guys don't care if they hit each other?!", Ren asked, equally in disbelief as Jaune.
Both Cinder and Emerald glared at Mercury, who merely whistled, telling them that he has nothing to do with this. The rest of the audience were also in shock and disbelief at their sudden internal quarrel with one another.
"Man, they're crazy with a Capital C.", Coco said, wiping her glasses.
"Who does that anyway? Aren't they suppose to work with one another?", Ruby added.
"Just as Adele had said, Ruby. They're crazy.", Weiss agreed with the fashion-loving teen.
"I've had enough, Mercury! You're-aaargh!", Cinder began before she started feeling intense pain from their chests and from their own internal system. Followed by Emerald then Mercury.
"What in Remnant's name is happening?", Glynda asked in shock, wondering what caused the three to receive intense pain just like that.
Emerald began to thrash violently on her cockpit as the rest of her teammates were struggling to move. "Shit! We're out of time!", Mercury exclaimed amidst the pain. "Cinder!"
Said pilot returned to the Raider MA form where it carried the Calamity using its claws before heading back towards the Alliance fleet followed by the Forbidden, leaving both Jaune and Ren aghast.
"What the hell just happened?", Roman said out loud, equally baffled as the rest of the audience.
"They were all cuckoo for moment then they acted as if a bomb exploded at their guts", Nora added.
"The three of them are artificially enhanced Naturals trained to kill Coordinators but their limits have reached its point and needed immediate maintenance for the sake of their health.", Aeralyn explained to them the nature of the three pilots.
"For short, they run on drugs?", Ozpin mused, finally realizing the dosages they had taken before the three took off to battle.
"As a means of enhancing their capabilities, yes. But they have their limits.", Flit confirmed to them, leaving the audience to be horrified at the aspects of drug-induced soldiers at the field. Ironwood and Winter scowled at this, clearly seeing the process to be inhumane and a violation to certain rules of war.
"Sir the new suits are returning.", informed one of the Alliance's COs, shocking both Watts and Cordova.
"What?", the Admiral said while the Calamity first entered aboard the carrier followed by its comrades. Watts was internally fuming at this. 'They're useless!'
"So Watts thought of the three as mere weapons. What do I expect", Ironwood snarled.
"Well it seems we all needed a little break from this battle. Call all forces back." Watts ordered as Admiral Cordova looked at him with disbelief. "It is only for a little bit, it would be pointless to keep fighting without our new machines. It only means Orb had some forces we were not expecting.", he re-assured her.
"Alright. Signal the withdrawal." Cordova ordered as three flares shot up in the air. Everyone watched as the Alliance temporarily retreated.
"Guess we won the day this time, Ren", Jaune told his teammate.
"Well, as if they could handle both of you", Nora added with a grin.
The Justice floated in front of the Freedom as Jaune looked at him cautiously, unsure wether to trust him or not. "Thanks for the backup...", Jaune began. "But I'm still wondering, why are you here, Ren?"
Ren sighed, remembering Nora Valkyrie and the day when she died trying to defend him from the same boy who had murdered her.
Said boy in the audience winced at the flashback of Nora dying, and the energetic girl held his hand to comfort him of that memory.
"I'm on orders from the homeland.", Ren began as he revealed himself from the Justice's cockpit. "To recapture or destroy that machine. But I have no intention of fighting you, or your allies for now. I just wanted to talk.", he finished.
Meanwhile, it was sunset as all surviving machines and their pilots rested after a day's worth in fighting. Saphron walked out of the command center only to see the rubble of what used to be a great city. As she walked forward she watched as the Freedom and the Justice came in for a landing. Slowly both of them lowered themselves to the ground and the two stared at one another, cautious of what the other was planning.
"So... western gunfight?", Yang chimed.
"Yang, I don't think they're going for that route.", Ruby told her.
"But it's still cool to watch, though", the brawler finished.
The sight of Ren in his red ZAFT uniform caused the guards raise their weapons in alarm but Jaune called out to them.
"He isn't an enemy." stated Jaune as they lowered their weapons and they walked toward each other as the crew from the Archangel and of the Orb military appeared on the other side watching as they walked toward each other.
'Ren? What is he doing here?' thought Sun as the two pilots stopped a few feet apart.
Soft music began to play as memories flashed between their minds; their inadverdent meeting on Heliopolis, their encounter at Orb, Jaune accidentally killing Nora, Ren murdering Adam, and eventually, their duel that nearly resulted to their deaths.
"Looks kinda overdramatic...", Roman commented.
"Shut it, Torchwick!", Glynda told him, her eyes focused on the screen.
The two continued to walk towards each other until they were meters away from where they stood. A green robotic bird flew above the two until it landed on Jaune's shoulder. "Hey, Ren.", Jaune greeted with a smile.
"Calling it, fight to the death with fists!", Yang called out.
"Jaune...", Ren barely said as he clenched his fist.
"You guys!", the two's conversation were interrupted by Saphron, who ran towards embraced the two and surprising everyone present. "You idiots...", she called out in relief as both Ren and Jaune could not help but smile at one another.
"Friendship repaired!", Nora cheerily declared as the rest of Beacon's staff smiled at the sight, knowing that the two chose to cast aside their differences and to work for the greater good of all.
The screen then shifts Kaguya and Orb's Mass Driver. When they landed at the space port they saw the Archangel in an outside dock getting some quick repairs and being loaded with supplies. They stored their suits next to the Strike and the Buster next to the Archangel. Quickly all three pilots headed indoors to the control room as they ran past M1's being loaded into a blue and white Orb warship. As they walked into the room Jonathan Arc, Saphron, Winter, Sun and Qrow where already there.
"What? Leave Orb?", Winter asked in a shocked tone.
"Yes, in case you have not noticed, Orb is all but lost." Jonathan stated.
"But they just beaten back the earlier assault, why is that?", Summer called out.
"Because Orb itself is a small country, while the Alliance itself is all but half the world. So it is unlikely they would be able to hold them off for long", Roman explained to them.
"What are you talking about Father?" asked Saphron
"We can't let the dream of Orb die. Right now, Blue Cosmos led by Arthur Watts, controls the Alliance. In the PLANTs, Li Ren is in charge of them. These two people willing to not stop till all of the other side is dead." Jonathan added.
"So a war of extermination...", Ironwood grimly mused, resulting of the others scowling at the implication.
"Vytal and Atlas were examples of the two factions' own actions towards one another. They'd take no quarter for the genetics they had to one another", Aeralyn added.
"We can't let those two be the only force out there. It may be a hard road but it has to be done if you want see a world without this war, take this small light we have kindled here into space." Jonathan Arc requested to which Winter complied with a nod.
"We will keep that light burning, Mr. Arc." confirmed Winter as they headed back to make the preparations.
"If you fire a volley from the Lohengrin it will increase your speed. Allowing you to escape the Earth's gravity." said an Orb technician on the bridge screen of the Archangel "Once you are away we will send up Kusanagi."
"A device that allows ships to travel beyond the stratosphere is something that can be elevated for the good of Atlas", Ironwood musef before he signaled Penny to write that down.
"I don't see why Carpentaria won't take us back." said Sun to Ren. "We have been fighting the Alliance after all."
"Same here, I once thought that I had to follow the orders of my nation but I have to follow what my heart tells me." Ren declared as the two pilots smiled at him.
Ren lowered his head with a blush, not really seeing himself saying those things while Nora, Phyrra and Jaune all gave him a cheeky grin.
"You're welcome to come with us then." Jaune told them before an alarm went off causing all three pilots to put their helmets on before getting into their mobile suits.
"Three enemy mobile suits detected."
"Archangel taking off." Winter declared. as the ship lifted off the ground.
"Board the Archangel, Sun", Ren ordered him. "This is an aerial fight and the Buster isn't designed for it." he stated as the Buster flew into the Archangel's hangar just as their two Lohengrin cannons lowered themselves into firing positions.
"Saphron, what are you still doing here, hurry up and leave!" yelled Jonathan at his daughter
"Father please, we will escape together.", she begged him as her father grabbed her hand and dragged her toward the ship. Outside the base were the Calamity and Raider flying towards the base. "Let's go!", Cinder called out in anticipation.
"They're here, Jaune!", Ren called out as the Justice floated behind the Archangel.
"Hurry up with the launch!", Jaune urged looking down at the ship.
"Fire!" yelled Winter as the two Lohengrin fired in front of them causing their speed to increase as the ship rocketed up toward the heavens.
"Penny, write that down. This is just too much to take.", Ironwood ordered, having been fascinated for so long by the technological aspects of this universe.
Mercury scowled at the sight of the ship escaping and the Calamity aimed at the Archangel, only for them to be met by beam rifle fire from both the Freedom and the Justice, forcing Cinder to take evasive maneuvers.
"Can't these guys give up already?", Neptune asked.
"They're villains man, so it's quite expected", Sun told him as if it was the most obvious answer.
"Hurry, and her get onboard." Jonathan ordered as he pushed is crying daughter into the hands of her body guard.
"But father." cried Saphron
"Now stop giving me that look." Jonathan told her. "You may be leaving your father but you will not be alone."
Saphron watched as he pulled a photo out of his shirt pocket, it was picture of a brown haired woman holding two babies a brown haired one in a blue blanket and a blonde one in a pink one.
"You will be with your brother." said Jonathan as Saphron turned the photo over and read to two names; Jaune and Saphron. Instantly her eyes widened as her father nodded. "I've been honored to have been your father." With that the door closed.
"Am I missing something here?", Jonathan finally asked.
"Well, neither Saphron nor Jaune's true biological parents are still alive. In fact, both were adopted by their respective families after their biological ones were murdered by terrorists", Flit told them as Jonathan and Elena had grim faces, not wanting to imagine both children with the pain of losing their own parents.
"Preparing for the Kusangi's final launch. All green. May the prayers of our Gods be with you." said a voice as the ship boosted forward along the Mass Driver towards space.
However, the Raider and the Calamity took notice of this. "Well, well. What do we have here?", Mercury gleefully called out while the Freedom and the Justice floated with one another.
"Ren!" Jaune called out.
"Right." Ren confirmed back as the two of them flew towards the fast moving ship while continously returning fire against the three mobile suits.
"Can their machines reach out at that kind of speed?", Ironwood asked.
"They are two of the fastest ones made by ZAFT firsthand. They just needed to hurry if they were to reach the ship itself.", Aeralyn replied.
"Damn it!", Mercury cursed while they continued to fire at them in vain. Jaune and Ren pushed thei engines of their mobile suits to the max as the Freedom managed to catch on the side of one of the ships engines. Quickly, he turned his suit around and with an outstretched hand for the Justice to hold on, with the Raider, Calamity, Forbidden at their heels.
"I'LL GET YA!", Cinder roared.
"Come on, come on, come on!", Nora called out while holding her chest, her heartbeat accelerating at the sight of the Justice reaching out for the Freedom.
The members of the audience were also feeling the rush of the two teens' desperate escape attempt to bring hope in space.
"You can do it, Jaune! Ren!", Ruby cheered on to the two boys on screen.
"This is insane..", Sun gasped at the intensity of the situation.
Both Jaune and Ren growled in both determination and desperation amidst of heavy fire by the Alliance Gundams. Eventually, the Freedom caught and grasped the Justice's hand and pulled the red mobile suit next to it.
"They made it!", Phyrra called out with a sigh of relief, not eager to see both her teammates in peril.
"But they still had those three on their tail" Weiss pointed out.
Nodding with one another, the Freedom stood above the Justice's backpack and activated the Freedom's Balaena and Xiphias cannons while the Justice aimed its Fortis beam cannons to the ocean.
Cinder, Mercury and Emerald scowled at the two mobile suits at them and that is when all six of the beam weapons fired. The Raider, Calamity and Forbidden were forced back by the ocean's massive waves just as the Kusanagi made the turn up to space completely.
"Awesome...", Ruby praised at the sight of Jaune and Ren finally getting rid of their adversaries, even if they were still alive. What was important that they managed to get the ship to safety.
"They did it!", Velvet called out.
"They made it out to space!", Ozpin added, also fascinated of Jaune and Ren's teamwork.
"Aww, what?", Mercury groaned. Even if they didn't die here, it was still sour for him to see his ass getting kicked on screen. Cinder and Emerald likewise felt the same.
"The seeds have flown." said Jonathan as he turned a key to the console with nods coming from Orb's other government officials. "We can't leave Orb or this world.", he began as he pushed a button. "Fall into the hands of those bastards!"., he finished as he scowled at the Alliance.
Suddenly a glowing light came from the Mass Driver before it all exploded in a giant fire ball that destroyed the base, and with it the Mass Driver and whatever is useful to the Alliance, to which Watts gritted his teeth in anger on what just happened. Jonathan Arc and members of the Orb government had sacrificed themselves in giving Orb a fighting chance to stop this war. In amidst the flames, Jonathan looked up before the flames completely consumed him.
"He gave up his life to give hope for the light he had lit...", Ironwood mused with a salute for the man while Jaune and Elena nodded their heads in respect for the Patriarch of the family.
"If you ask me, the guy went down like a boss!", Roman complimented the man as the others nodded on confirmation.
"Father NO!" yelled Saphron as she looked back from one of the back windows of the Kusanagi. Jaune and Ren lowered their heads in respect of the fallen leader as the clouds started to disappear and the void of space began. The screen fades to black thereafter.
