A/N: Alright so this is an AU Burzek story that I came up with when I woke up this morning so hope you enjoy the out of the box story.

The district was buzzing but that wasn't unusual. The twenty first was one of the busiest district in the city and it also housed the Intelligence Unit. Trudy was at the front desk and she was waiting for the right someone to show his face. As soon as she saw him come up the stairs, she flagged him down.

"Hey Ruzek, I need a favour from you."

"I'm running late Sarge." He tried to get past her and up the stairs to the palm scanner but she stopped him as she walked around her counter, blocking his way.

"Voight already signed off on it." Adam nodded, knowing he wouldn't win this one. "I need someone I can trust for this one."

"Okay, what do you want me to do?"

"I want you to pick up this kid from this address."

"Come on Sarge, kids, really?" Don't get him wrong, he loved his nephew but kids in general wasn't his thing.

"Yeah kids." She deadpanned with an eyeroll. "And then I want you to bring him over to Med to room 324 and wait for me there." She handed him the paper with a name written on it. "Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT, let him go into that room do I make myself clear Detective?"

"Yeah Sarge, real clear." He took the paper from her and returned to his car, heading in the direction of the address. He looked at the paper while he drove. The name Burgess didn't ring a bell in his mind but he knew that address. His nephew Sammy attended that school and he knew his way around the facility. He parked in the front and made his way inside the building. He looked on each side of the hallway and headed towards the principal's office. "Hi, I'm Detective." He started but the woman smiled back at him and interrupted his speech.

"Detective Ruzek. Did you come to pick up Sammy?"

"Not today." He smiled back at her. "I came to pick up Michael Burgess?" He handed her the paper Trudy had given him.

"He's in after class home room. Is everything okay?" She was now sporting a frown on her face.

"I'm not sure." He shrugged. "I was told to pick him up and bring him to Med. What's his parents do?" Trudy had given him no details.

"Father's out of the picture, mom's a cop." And in that moment, Adam had two assumptions. One, she was on a suspect detail at Med or, the one assumption he didn't want to entertain, that turned his insides, was that she had been shot on the job.

"Okay." He schooled his features, not wanting to freak the young woman out. "Mind pointing me in his direction?"

"Sure, follow me." She walked around the desk and he walked the halls behind her. They turned through two hallways before she stopped in front of the door. "It might be best if I'm the one to go get him."

"Yeah." If his gut was right and his mom was in fact in the hospital for on-duty related injury, he didn't want to be the one to be the one to tell him. He watched as she walked inside and spoke with the teacher that was watching them. He watched as this tall, lanky, he'd say around ten- year-old got out of his seat when his name was called. He stuffed his things in his back pack and followed the secretary out of the room.

"What's going on?" Was his first question off the bat when he eyes Adam and gave him the eye. "Is mom okay?"

"I don't know buddy." Adam answered.

"I'm not your buddy." Michael rebuked. "I don't even know you."

"Michael." The secretary reprimanded him.

"No, it's okay, he's right." He turned to face him. "My name is Adam Ruzek. I'm a Detective at your mom's district and Sargent Platt is the one who asked me to come pick you up." His eyes lit up at the mention of Platt's name.

"Okay." He finally shook Adam's hand. "If aunt Trudy sent you than I can trust you."

"Smart kid." He smirked. "You ready to go?"

"Yeah."

"Thanks again." The secretary smiled at them and Adam guided Michael to his truck.

"In the back you go." Adam told him as he opened the front door.

"Mom lets me ride shotgun."

"Fine, hop in." The kid was quick with his mouth. "So, how old are you?" Adam looked at him as he drove into traffic.

"Just turned ten." He pulled out a portable Nintendo Switch out of his backpack and turned it on.

"Sweet game. It new?" He was trying to get some more information out of him but clearly, he was already in his pre-teen, ignore the adults' attitude. "I get it, not in the talking mood, I can work with that." Adam let him to his game and drove to Med. He kept stealing glances at the boy and tried to figure out what he was all about. His nephew Sammy was a more reserved boy but he figured that if he was so comfortable with adults and had such a strong personality at ten, his mother must have taught him to hold his own. It all made him wonder what kind of cop, what kind of woman his mother was. He parked his truck in the priority parking in front of Med and turned to face Michael.

"We're here." He looked up and noticed the truck had come to a stop so he stuffed his game back in his bag. "Grab all your things." Michael did as he was told and hopped out of the truck at the same time Adam did. He walked next to Adam but Adam wanted a few answers to his questions. "So, your mom?" He was hoping he'd open up by himself.

"Kim Burgess, she works the beat."

"What about Platt? What's the story there?"

"Aunt Trudy takes care of me sometimes."

"Aunt Trudy huh?" He smirked, planning on using that against her at some point. "Good to know." They walked inside and were greeted by Maggie.

"Detective Ruzek, what brings you by?"

"I'm looking for room 324. Platt said she'd meet me there."

"Third floor to the left when you get off the elevators."

"Thanks Maggie." He smiled at her and guided Michael to the elevators. They rode up in silence and Michael made a B-line to the left as soon as the doors opened. Adam fell in step under Platt's threat in his head to not let him inside the room.

"Where's my mom?" He turned around to face Adam when he made it to the room.

"Not sure Michael, Trudy just told me to meet her here. How about we take a seat until she gets here?"

"Sure, whatever." Adam couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips as the kid went straight for the chairs against the wall. It wasn't really long until Trudy made her appearance, Michael on his feet and in her arms as soon as he saw her.

"Hey bud, how was school?" She ruffled his hair.

"It sucked."

"Hey, language." She used the same tone with him as she did her patrolmen. "Your mother taught you better than that."

"Yes ma'am."

"Can you go sit down again while I talk to Detective Ruzek?"

"Yes." He went back to his seat and pulled his Switch again and plugged his headphones in.

"What's up Sarge?" She looked back at Michael before talking to Adam.

"His mother is in there with a GSW to the shoulder and some bruising to the ribs and I need someone to help me out with Michael."

"Come on Sarge, you can't ask me that. Kids and I don't mesh."

"Look Adam." She looked back at Michael. "Kim is good police but she was dealt a shitty hand and I help her as much as I can."

"I know, Aunt Trudy." His smile came easy but it was genuine rather than teasing.

"Laugh all you can but that boy could use a little bit of man guidance."

"Trust me, that kid hates me." He chuckled but he changed his tune with the look on Trudy's face. "Fine, I'll help."

"Thanks. Hey Mickey?" Platt called but it fell on deaf ears. "That kid I swear." She walked towards him and pulled the earbuds out roughly. "Michael Christopher Burgess, I'm talking to you."

"Sorry. Where's mom?" Adam leaned against the wall next to him.

"The thing with your mom, the reason you're here."

"Something happened to her on the job didn't it?"

"Yeah." Adam said. She got hit in the shoulder and she's pretty bruised up."

"When can I see her?" He put a strong front but Adam suspected it was just a front.

"Come on, I'll go with you." Adam put a hand on his shoulder. He remembered like it was yesterday how it felt to have your parent figure get hurt. Adam pushed the door open and they stepped inside together. "Are you okay?"

"Who did this to her?

"I don't know Michael. I think Trudy might me a better person to tell you about it, if that's what you really want."

"Is she going to be okay?"

"Yeah bud." Michael gave him the eye again and Adam pulled away, taking a seat at the end of the bed. "You see that machine?" He pointed at the heart monitor, Michael taking a seat in the chair next to his mom. "The number right there is her heart rate and it's strong so that means your mom is okay and she's resting."

"What about that one?" He pointed to the green one. Adam proceeded in telling him about the numbers on the screen he did know about.

"When is she going to wake up?" Michael asked.

"As soon as she's ready." The two of them turned around when Dr. Marcelle walked in the room. "We had to fix your mom's shoulder but she's going to do a full recovery."

"What about healing time?" Adam asked.

"Should be around six weeks but we'll see in two weeks when she comes back for a follow-up."

"Thanks doc."

"Anytime. The nurses will page me when she wakes up. I'll be back later." He patted Michael on the shoulder and left the room.

"Alright, let's get you back to my place." Trudy walked into the room.

"Can I stay until she wakes up?" Michael used his most pouty face on her.

"Just until she wakes up." She shared a look with Adam.

"I'll keep him company." He promised her.

"Thanks Adam, I really need to get back to the district.

"No problem Sarge, we'll be alright, right Mike?" Adam finally found the name that the kid didn't cringe at.

"Yeah, really good." Michael promised.

"Alright, I'll swing by later. Ruzek." She nodded.

"Sarge." The room was silent for a few minutes but Michael was the first to break it.

"Dad was a real ass to us."

"Michael." Adam warned. "I doubt your mom would want you to talk like that."

"She hates him too you know."

"Where is he now?" He asked out of curiosity.

"Phoenix and he doesn't want anything to do with us."

"How do you feel about that."

"I'm fine with it because mom smiles a lot more since he's gone."

"Good to know. You got your mom's name, what's that about?"

"I hate him and I want nothing to do with him." He simply said.

"He got a name?"

"Matthew Baker." Adam nodded, keeping the name in his memory until he could run a background check on him. They ordered some pizza and they ate dinner together before Michael fell asleep in the more comfortable chair in the corner of the room. Adam took a seat in the chair Michael was sitting in earlier and he just watched Kim sleep.

Platt had mentioned something about being dealt a shitty hand and with Michael revealing more information, he knew just how much. He examined her features and the corner of his lips lifted in a smile. Her features were soft and her hair a shiny brown colour. He wondered what colour her eyes were under those closed eyelids or what her smile would look like. He went through his phone while he watched over her, Kevin having texted him a few times since he had left the district mid-afternoon. His eyes were downcast on his phone when he heard it, the movement registering on his peripheral vision. She grunted as she woke, her legs moving to try to lift her body higher in the bed. Adam set his phone aside sat closer on the side of the chair, not wanting her to be spooked when she woke up. She blinked a few times and when she was fully awake, brown met brown and Kim took a deep breath.

"Who are you?"
