Chapter 4: Where's Hermione when you need her

Waking up is a startling affair. Beyond the hope that everything yesterday was just a huge acid trip. Waking up in a bed that I have memories of sleeping in before but never having physically done so before is jarring at best. I see the sun has already risen and can smell breakfast coming from downstairs.

Grabbing my bathroom bag and a fresh set of clothes, I go to the Boys dorm shower which strangely looks like the Head at my old barracks during basic. Instead of the more traditional Japanese look, I was expecting. It doesn't take me long to finish and grab some breakfast. Soon I'm out the door, walking toward the library with a satchel bag carrying a notebook and pencil. 'If memory serves, I have two months to get ready for my last year. I'll give myself this week to work out a schedule and list of projects I'm going to learn or train in.'

I find the large building right where it should be. Entering and looking around, I have two distinct thoughts about it. First was being giddy as a 90's schoolgirl at a Backstreet Boys concert. 'I'm actually going to be learning to be a ninja. A NINJA. This is as close as I can get to a War Mage without a couple of dragons flying overhead.' And the more annoyed thought of 'This berk never step foot in here before because he didn't see the point.' "Christ, I have a lot of research to get done." Getting in character is going to be tough since I couldn't act to save my life. But if I keep up with what is considered normal here, I can gradually be more myself since this guy was a relatively unknown person.

Walking up to the information desk "Pardon me. Would you please tell me where the Shinobi section of the Library is?" A middle-aged woman looks up from the paperwork she was working on. "Are you an Academy student child?" At my nod, she responds "The student sections are on the second floor. You want the west wing. The east wing, stairs, and floor above that are restricted to those with the proper clearance level. Careful where you go because there is always a guard present. They are normally in an ill mood being posted here and won't give you a chance to explain yourself." I bow and start making my way the second floor.

I sit at a desk off to the side deeper in the wing and set myself up for a long day. I take a minute to write down what I want to look up and research before I go out to search. Proper conduct, regulations, rules, and SOP (Standard operating procedures) for the Shinobi corps is a start. A glance at several history books to make sure the anime and manga match up to this world would be second. All requirements for making Genin would be third. 'Just because I think I know what I need to pass doesn't mean I really do know.' Then I'll grab everything I can find on Chakra and relating topics. I need to learn all I can bout the lifeblood of this world. How to control it, grow it, and what can be done with it. 'I'm going to have to write down all the control exercises and everything else I can remember from the show. Trial and Error is going to be annoying but the benefits of having these things down will set me on the right path.'

It took well over an hour just to find the books I needed for conduct and history. Never in all the years in my life would I think I'd miss the Dewy Decimal system. I still haven't figure out how they arrange everything except in rough topics. Looking into the stacks was an interesting experience, for one there was a wall with instead of bookshelves was square cubby holes in them filled with scrolls. I'm hoping they are all technique scrolls but truly doubt it. I tell myself I will attack them after I get my foundations set. While I know how to use Charka from my host's memories, I don't want to do anything the way this kid did until I confirm he was doing it right.

The single book I find on the Code and Conduct of a Konoha Shinobi was written by Senju Tobirama. I'll make sure it is up to date but felt this will be a good read as it was written by arguably the greatest of the Hokages. I also find several books on the three shinobi wars that have taken place and the biographies of several famous ninjas from the village.

I start with Tobirama's book and despite its small size, it contains a lot of information. If this was how the leader of the village felt we should act, then I have no problem believing how we became the top of the food chain and are still considered so after several disasters to the village forces. It strikes a chord in me. I've seen books like this before from my service in the army and I find myself nodding along while reading.

I doubt that this is still the standard due to what I can remember from the story. The rookie twelve would never have gotten away with half the crap they pulled if this was the case. 'I'm going to figure out how to keep you. If I let several people see me openly reading this I will be able to point it out to anyone worried about how fast I changed. It also might keep Danzo of my back if I come into the spotlight. Following his Sensei's words without requiring brainwashing will make me seem like an asset without the need for conditioning.'

It is lunchtime by the time I finish reading. I get up and leave my books at the table. I go to the front desk where the same woman is still working. "Librarian-san, can I leave the books I was studying at the table while I go get some lunch?" She didn't even have the common curtsy to look up. "Sure thing kid. Just come back and pick up your mess later. Or I'll find you and make you reshelve all the books from today." I nod and leave, heading back to the orphanage to get lunch. Shaking my head, I think of the state of the library I was just in. 'If the Librarian I knew back in my world had walked in there she would have shut the place down, kicked everyone out, and would not let anyone back in till the place was probably organized. This would after she beat that woman half to death with a dictionary.'

To my surprise, everything is where I left it when I get back. Looking around, it becomes a little daunting thinking about everything I need to learn and confirm before I can even go back to a training field. I have the impulse to start acting like a Nara and start muttering "troublesome. I stop myself and refocus on the task at hand. I know what is coming and I am not going to get caught with my pants down.

The rest of the day finishes with a headache and pondering who wrote all this crap. While the books explaining the timeline and famous battles and ninjas seem factual, the rest of the books I read have so much village propaganda I become worried I've been sent to a World War 2 Russia instead of a Ninja world. Sighing I go back to the front desk to speak with the lady pretending to be a librarian. "Excuse me. I finished and placed all the books back to their proper place.." She finally looks up and replies "Good job gaki. You have cleaned up after yourself and proven you are at least eighty percent better than the others who come in here. Do you actually need something?" Keeping my tone polite even though I wanted to strangle this lady, I respond "Yes. I would like to check out this book or if possible buy it from the library. I feel it can help me in the future." She looked up at the title and went to a large book seeming to look through it. "Yeah, I can sell it to you. Thing's old as dirt and I can't remember anyone ever checking it out. And since it's not restricted material there's no ban on it. That will be 2,000 Ryo." I stare hard at her for a second knowing I'm being robbed but I really do need this book. It will be the perfect cover. I nod and reach in my satchel and take the money from my inventory. "Can I have a receipt for it?" I ask, handing her the money. She seems to think about it for a second before taking out a piece of paper and noting the book title, today's date and the amount paid. I place it in the book and head back home to call it a night.

As I lay down in my bed thinking about everything that happen today, I start getting a small headache. The amount of info I simply need is staggering. I have two months to get me up to speed and get myself on the track needed to simply survive this world. Even though I am getting to live out a dream, every time I glance over my stats and the knowledge given to me I can't help but wish I had two or three years to get this done. Having only two months to train this body to become what I need it to be will prove damn near impossible. But the need to research all the information required is a time suck that makes it that much harder.

The fact I didn't get a single stat point from today's reading and studying has put me in a sour mood. I remember the Game handing out stat points like beads at Mardi Gras in other stories I read. The characters would get stat points for the simplest of freaking things such as chewing gum and walking at the same time. But no, I got a jacked version! This is going to be harder than I thought. I also haven't been given even a single quest to work off, leaving me hanging in the wind, directionless.

I decide to take the easy way and simply ask the game a question I really should have thought of before now. 'How do I beat this Naruto Game?' A screen pops open but it was the same as the help screen.

I groan as I look this over. So many variables can be taken from this quest its not even funny and I have around or less than six years to get this done. 'I need a drink. So, kill a goddess. Set up someone to kill a goddess or just plain prevent the whole 4th Shinobi world war. Just great, this is going to be hell. I'll come back to you in a few weeks after I start training and see what type of gains I get from working my ass off.'

I previously planned to only take a week or less to get everything I need to begin my training. But it takes me close to 9 days to finish. My forehead now has a bruise which makes me wish I already had my Hitai-ate simply so when I slam my head on the table from all the studying and planning I'm doing it wouldn't hurt so much. I'm lucky I didn't get a debuff for concussion or brain damage. I hit the damn thing hard enough a few times that the guard I couldn't see across the way would giggle.

But it was not all for nothing. I did it and then some. I completed my training schedule and got some great bonus material from searching every inch of this section. Half my notebook is filled with milestones and training exercises both from what I can remember and what I could find. To give you an idea of what I would be doing for the next forty-some ah days. The current final examination is a fifty question test which covers everything from history, wilderness survival and hypothetical combat scenarios that require essay answers. There is a shurikenjutsu test consisting of hitting a target with 10 shuriken and kunai at a nonmoving target. An obstacle course, and taijutsu exam against a chunin. And finally the Academy three ninjutsu. Well, good for me but if this is the only thing they require of their children soldiers I wonder what the death ratio is for genin on their first C-rank mission.

I plan on training on my speed, stamina, and charka the most till the beginning of class. Now the treasure trove I found which made wasting nine freaking days in what I'm calling the City of Dis worth it. I found a really old academy textbook from right after the second shinobi war. It was almost twice the size of the current textbook and all the extra material was practical material. A lot of E-rank camping ninjutsu which lets students get their feet wet with elemental transformation. How to strengthen your body by flowing your charka internally and many other things relating to the use of charka.

I also found a copy for the beginning katas of the Monkey Fist (that went straight to my inventory. Wish I thought about doing this before buying my first book) which I thought would be awesome to learn. A style built around speed and evasion, plus I'm sure the Old Monkey in the tower will scratch his head trying to figure out where I learn it before giving in and simply asking me. I also pick-up a beginner's scroll on Bojutsu. I really wanted to learn Kenjutsu and act like Rurouni Kenshin but lack of funds snubbed that plan before it started. So, I need to pick up a bo staff later but wanted everything else to at least where I look professional while doing all the previous lists first. I have a few Jutsu written in English that were explained enough in the manga and anime which I should be able reverse engineer so I have some attacks before I become a genin. This is of course if I can get my Charka pool to look like something that a combat personal can depend on.

I plan on three weeks of training before I approach Rock Lee for a sparing partner. I've caught him leaving early and coming back as late as I was the last week. I sure he has started picking up his training. I hoping befriending him early will give me someone I can rely on later because he becomes an absolute beast later. So I have three weeks before I start getting my ass kick for an hour daily. Now on to the last time I found the thing I hope which will be my key to being able to reach the levels of Naruto and Sasuke during the 4th war. A beginner's primer to Fuinjutsu. Work my ass off in the day and studying and practice at night when I can no longer move. I've basically committed myself to a month-long Hell week while pretending to study college-level chemistry finals at night. If I haven't gone insane yet, I hope my sanity survives what I plan to put myself through. 'I need a drink. Wonder if I can find a substitute for Rum in the elemental nations.'

As I exit the library which I hope for the last time in a long while my white dot of headaches makes itself known. Mentally tapping it as I make my way to the orphanage to begin setting everything up for tomorrow.

Spending a large amount of time reading has improved your ability to remember information +1 Int

For making a detailed schedule to prepare yourself for your final year as a student +1 Wis

'Really only one each for nine days of studying and planning is all I get.' I mentally close the screen and ignore it. 'I will become stronger and no matter what roadblocks you throw up I'll overcome them.'

A/N: No beta for this chapter. I spent a good amount of time making sure it was readable. I started writing the next chapter but have a question if anyone is willing to give a suggestion. How much screen time should I put in to tell about his training? I've seen other works which have chapters worth of training, and I'm worried about it get repetitive if I go over every single day
