It was the summer of 1995. Ragged Robin, known as just Robin at the time, had just finished her first year at college. It was a complete disaster. She had failed several of her classes and her scholarships were on the verge of being rescinded. Everything had fallen apart.

In elementary school, she had been considered a gifted student, so she had been a part of the gifted and talented program. In middle school she got straight A's for all three years. In high school she did very well, taking a lot of honors and AP classes and graduating fifth in her class. That all changed in college.

At first things were fine. She was doing well in her classes and had made friends in the sorority she had pledged. But as time went on the classes kept getting harder and harder and the amount of homework kept increasing and increasing. Robin couldn't keep up anymore.

She concluded that she couldn't be a part of the sorority anymore, so that she could focus more on her studies. So, she left the sorority, but she did not use the extra time to study more. Instead, she started going for long walks at night.

Whatever Robin was looking for during those walks she did not find. But she kept walking anyway. During that summer of 1995 Robin was on a particularly long walk when she decided that she wanted to kill herself.

Robin walked into a supermarket, still open late at night, and went to the isle that had the sleeping pills. She took a box of the pills and put it into her jacket pocket. Then she just walked out of the store. It was the first time that she had ever shoplifted.

She kept walking until she saw a half empty bottle of iced tea that someone had left on the sidewalk. Robin picked it up and carried it with her. She found a secluded place and decided that this was where she would die.

She swallowed the entire box of sleeping pills, one at a time, with the iced tea. Then she waited. And waited. And waited.

Robin waited so long that she changed her mind about dying. She walked home. Her parents were up, wondering where she had been. She said that she was tired and just wanted to go to her room and sleep.

While in her room her stomach started to hurt. Robin paced around her room, hoping that she hadn't actually killed herself. After a few minutes she threw up all over the carpet. She felt a lot better and was now very sleepy. She went to bed and slept a very deep sleep. And she woke up in the morning to a brand new day.
