"We won, Mr. Stark," Peter gasped out, trying to hold back the tears. "We won, Mr. Stark. We won. You did it, sir, you did it." The tears fell, quick and hot. "I'm sorry. No. Tony." Peter sobbed, squeezing Tony's arm, begging his mentor to come back.
He had so much to learn. There was so much Peter still didn't know. Things only Tony could teach him. And Tony. He had so much to live for. So much to still do with his life.
A hand rested on his shoulder. Peter knew it was Pepper. He moved to the side and stood up, still not tearing his eyes away from Mr. Stark. He couldn't move now, couldn't take a single step. He couldn't think. He could only listen. Pepper spoke something, but Peter didn't hear what she said. He only heard the last weak words of Iron Man. The strained breaths. The weakening beat of his heart.
"Pep'r." A weak mutter came from the battered body.
Peter didn't think it could get worse, until the hero muttered, "Kid."
Peter wanted to run to Tony. He wanted to embrace him. Give him his healing powers. Take the stones from Tony's glove and snap everything again. Snap Tony back to life. Anything to make this okay again.
But he couldn't. He couldn't move an inch. He could only watch, as though through a fog, as Pepper let her head fall onto Tony's chest. He could only watch as the light of the arc reactor flickered out.
He could only listen as Tony's breathing stopped. He could only listen as Tony's heartbeat slowed, slowing down to the point where it didn't beat again. He could only listen as the world around him burned.
He was shaking. His legs crumpled and he fell to the ground. Peter couldn't tear his eyes away from it all. The burned and tortured face of his mentor, his idol, broken and bleeding. He couldn't take his eyes away from Tony's open ones, eyes that used to tell Peter when to watch out for a prank, eyes that used to fill with worry when Peter would be injured. Eyes that no longer held humor and warmth.
Tony was gone. And Peter fell to the ground, feeling empty. Confused. Cold.
Shattered.
