A few months after being recruited into the Invisibles by the time traveling Marquis de Sade, Jimmy bought and read a copy of The Invisibes Vol 1 #1, which had just been published. The story of a troubled youth trying to burn down his school sent chills down Jimmy's spine. Jimmy knew it was time to leave Littleton, Colorado before it was too late.
During the fall of 1994 Jimmy moved to nearby Golden, Colorado. He met and moved in with Ray, a fellow Invisible. While Dane was being trained how to be an Invisible by Tom O'Bedlam in the comic book, Jimmy was being trained by Ray in the "real" world.
Jimmy and Ray had a normal relationship for the first two weeks, but then the training began. Ray stopped eating his meals with Jimmy. They both ate alone. Ray stopped talking to Jimmy. It was if Jimmy no longer existed. In the evening Ray went out with his friends. Jimmy was never invited. Jimmy had no friends.
Jimmy started taking long walks at night, trying to figure out the meaning behind his training program. He saw no meaning, only emotional torture. Jimmy started looking at pornography. Jimmy continued reading the Invisibles comic book.
Jimmy thought to himself, "Dane tried to burn down his school and was rewarded with a kind, loving mentor in Tom O'Bedlam. I played hooky, but I never tried to burn down my school. So, I am punished with a cold, distant mentor who refuses to acknowledge my existence."
One day, while using the bathroom in his apartment, Jimmy saw a spiral notebook on the floor. On the cover was written the words "The Journal." Jimmy started reading "The Journal" only to discover that it was a group journal written by Ray and his friends. Jimmy stopped reading when he came across an entry written by Ray in which Ray described Jimmy as being a "total freak." The Invisibles were never mentioned in "The Journal."
Shortly thereafter, Ray moved out. Jimmy did not get a new roommate. He preferred to live alone now. Jimmy was now truly an Invisible.
