Author's Note: Welcome to chapter three! I originally planned for this to be a birth one-shot but I struggled so much with writing a birth scene, so this is what I managed to come up with instead! There's no Glinda in this one-shot and I apologise for that - she was supposed to be in it - but she is mentioned near the end and I promise she'll be in the next one! I hope you all enjoy :)
Elphaba leaned her head against her husband's shoulder when she was sat beside him on their bed on the night of their daughter's birth, her gaze focused on their sweet Nessa as she cradled her in her arms and watched her suck at her breast. She was so small – a lot smaller than she had thought she'd be – but she had managed to take up such a large part of her heart in the two hours she had been in the world. 'Wow…' She sighed gently.
She tilted her head back on her husband's shoulder when she felt his chest rumble with his chuckle, her eyes falling closed for a moment when Fiyero kissed her on the hairline. The two of them shared a smile when he pressed his forehead to hers and eased an arm beneath her own to help her cradle their nursing daughter, his warm breath causing her to sigh as it hit her in the face. 'I think that's a perfect word to describe this evening…'
'It all feels so surreal,' She told him. 'This morning she was inside me and I was going on and on about how much I wanted her out, and now she's here and I'm holding her and it's all just so…so wonderful.' She felt him slip his arm out from beneath hers a few seconds later and her heart raced in her chest when he lifted his hand up to her face, his touch tender as he brushed a raven curl back beneath her ear before giving her face a stroke.
'I don't think I've ever been so proud of you,' He wrapped his arm around her middle and placed his hand on her somewhat deflated stomach. 'You made that look like the easiest thing in the world, Fae, and I still don't understand how you kept so calm when you were in so much pain. I know for a fact that I wouldn't be able to cope with that much pain as well as you did. You are such an inspiration to me and I hope that you never forget that.'
Elphaba felt tears prick at the back of her eyes as she leaned against him, but managed to blink them away before one could roll down her cheek and burn her skin. 'You have no idea how long I've waited for this,' She sniffed. 'How long I've waited to fall in love with someone who loves me in return and to have a child. It's all I ever thought about when I was growing up, but I never thought that it would happen for me because of how I look.'
'There is nothing wrong with how you look and I am never going to stop reminding you of that. You might have green skin, but the colour of your skin does not define who you are as a person,' He managed to coax a smile from her before she lowered her gaze to their little girl when she moved in her arms. 'I think that you have perfect skin, but that isn't what I think about every time I look at you or lie in bed next to you.' He said in her ear.
'It's not?' She asked whilst patting Nessa on the small of her back through her blanket.
He shook his head.
'No, the first thing I think about when I look at you is how privileged I am.' He told her.
She lifted her head and looked into his eyes again. 'You mean that, don't you?'
'Of course I do,' He reassured her. 'There's no-one else I would rather be tied down to.'
'I feel the exact same way…' She whispered before leaning in to kiss his lips. 'I love you.'
He gave her a light squeeze, remembering that she was still rather sore. 'I love you too.'
The two of them went back to gazing down at Nessa then, Fiyero resting his chin on her shoulder as he stroked her stomach with his thumb. 'You know; I have the worst feeling that Glinda's going to come flouncing in here in the morning with a box filled to the brim with pink clothes,' She shuddered. 'I wouldn't be surprised if she's sat making dresses in her bedroom as we speak.' She closed her eyes when Fiyero pressed his lips to her neck.
'She just wants to help,' He reminded her. 'That's all.'
'Fiyero, she delivered Nessa. I think she's helped enough, don't you?' She smiled.
He hummed. 'I still think we should accept at least one outfit though, love.'
'Fine,' She grumbled. 'But our daughter is not going to grow up resembling a ditsy fairy…'
She turned her head to smile at him before accepting the languid kiss that he placed on her lips, the smack of their lips filling the silence of the bedroom before he allowed her to rest against his chest. 'I still can't believe that we managed to create something this beautiful…' He breathed whilst running his fingers over Nessa's soft raven tufts of hair.
'I know,' She lowered her head to kiss their little girl on the forehead. 'My darling girl…'
'I can't wait to see you with her when she's older,' He beamed. 'She's going to adore you.'
She laid her head on his shoulder. 'I think she's going to be a daddy's girl.'
'Regardless of whether she's a mummy or a daddy's girl, I'll always love her.' He told her.
'So will I,' She turned her head to kiss him on the cheek. 'Just as much as I love you.'
The two of them then fell into a comfortable silence with Nessa, allowing themselves to be surrounded entirely with happiness, peacefulness, affection and – most of all – love.
