After Gabby Gabby went home with Kelsey that night, Kelsey hugged her new favorite toy Gabby to sleep. From then on they played, ate, slept, spent every waking moment together. Kelsey and Gabby were inseparable.

One day, Kelsey's parents asked Kelsey: "Honey, what do you want for your birthday?" Without hesitation, Kelsey answered, "I want a new outfit for Gabby! Her dress and shoes got dirty when she and I got lost at the carnival." Gabby was touched. She has always wondered what it's like to be loved by a kid of her own. That hot summer in August, all of Gabby's dreams came true.

And that, was why it was especially crushing when a week later, on Kelsey's birthday, the voice box that Gabby took from Woody stopped working.

On the birthday morning, when Kelsey pulled Gabby's string, Gabby's once broken voice came back. "Hi... hi… hi… I am… Ga--a--bby Gabby, and I… I… I… love you." Gabby couldn't believe what she heard.

"Is this the sound coming out of me? Is my dream life over?"

A million thoughts raced through Gabby's mind. Ever since she came to Kelsey's home, she had been so consumed in Kelsey's undivided love and attention that she had barely looked around to meet Kelsey's other toys. Now she wondered: "Do I need to snatch a voice box from another toy again? The Bensons are not here to help me… Am I doomed?"

Before Gabby had a chance to come up with a plan, Kelsey has followed her parents to the car and brought Gabby along. Gabby thought, "Well, at least I still get to go to the toy store with Kelsey, maybe everything will be ok."

When they arrived at the toy store, what immediately caught both Kelsey and Gabby's eyes was a doll that looked identical to Gabby. Gabby's heart sank. Kelsey, still holding Gabby in her hand, walked over and picked up this new doll that looked to be Gabby's twin. Kelsey pulled the string of the brand new doll, and the doll said in a cute, perfect voice, "Hi I am Patty Patty, and I love you." Gabby wanted to break down in tears but held her composure. Devastated, she thought, "It's over for me. Even I would pick Patty over myself. She is perfect. I am not."

Holding Gabby in one hand and Patty in the other, Kelsey looked at Patty, then looked back at Gabby. After what seemed like an eternity, Kelsey put down Patty and walked to the shelf of doll dresses. She picked up a purple dress and asked Gabby, "Gabby, I think this dress would look pretty on you. Do you like it?"

Gabby wept inside, but it's all tears of joy and gratitude. All her life she thought she needed her voice box fixed to be loved. Today, Gabby learned, she's loved by Kelsey not because she had a perfect voice, but because she had been there when Kelsey most needed her.

When they got home, Kelsey helped Gabby change to her new dress, and on the bottom of Gabby's shiny new shoes, Kelsey proudly wrote, "K-E-L-S-E-Y."
