Life for Adrien Agreste isn't always easy.
There's the mysterious disappearance of his mother, Emilie Agreste, that left him completely shattered and alone. He remembered spending countless days mourning for her return and for her to heal his young and broken heart. When he realised that there was no hope of her coming back, he turned to his father for help, but there was no use as his father was deeper into the void than he was.
There's no denying Gabriel Agreste loved his wife dearly; more so than his son but still, he spared most of his free time playing with young Agreste and being the caring dad he used to be. Oh, how Adrien wishes he could go back. Between his father hoisting Adrien up his shoulders and them running freely into the fields, while his mother laughed at her son's squeals or his dad's reaction at him overflowing the bath with bubbles while he pretended to be a shark, it was these moments that Adrien missed the most- that he missed having a father. Sure, anyone could be a father but not everyone could be Adrien's father except for Gabriel himself, and that's what broke him the most. Adrien experienced a different side to his father after his mother disappeared; his warmth diminished and replaced by a hard exterior, conversations shortened into nothing and completed weekly schedules were a new expectation.
As Gabriel burdened himself into his work, Adrien sunk himself deeper into his marble prison and witnessed the bars getting stronger and harder to escape each following day. Emotion after emotion entered like an overloaded ATM machine, every thought squishing into his already cramped mind, making it impossible to think. Lonely and afraid, Adrien only ever wished for one thing; Freedom. Freedom of his father's prison, freedom of his guilt of his mother's disappearance, freedom into doing whatever he imagined. Despite his wish, he knew that there was almost no way of it becoming a reality with his father in the situation.
Weeks turned into months, which turned into years as Adrien, struggled to get free of his father's controlling grasp and cold nature. On a beautiful, sunny morning, Adrien knew that enough was enough, and so he fled. He fled from his expectations and responsibilities; he fled from his unwelcoming and isolated mansion and more so, he fled from being his father's loyal dog and became himself. The Adrien Agreste hidden in his shell became free once more.
From that day on, Adrien eventually got hopeful again and it evidently showed through his actions. He trained better at fencing and developed a quicker reaction time, improved his piano skills and even went up a grade in no less than four days, and enhanced his Chinese vocabulary and passed his tests. He knew that achieving this was normal for his father, being the famous fashion designer that he is, but he didn't care.
As though the reign of his bad days were over, he received another stroke of good luck. After escaping his home once again and bumping into what he thought was an ordinary person in the street, he never expected a chain of events to unfold from that first impression. Regardless, Adrien would never trade anything to change what happened because it lead him to meeting Plagg.
Through Plagg, he secured his freedom to go outside whenever he wanted.
Through Plagg, he acquired an amazing (yet annoying) companion that helped him with his everyday troubles.
Most importantly, through Plagg, he met his partner-in-crime, Ladybug. At first, Adrien was sceptical of his partner, but nonetheless welcomed her as an attempt to make a potential friend. However, after Ladybug's speech from their battle with Stoneheart, Adrien knew she was the one. The following akuma attacks after that consisted him helplessly flirting towards Ladybug in hopes of her ever duplicating his feelings. He couldn't help it, Ladybug was the kindest, smartest, most caring and the prettiest girl he's ever met and it didn't help for the fact that half of Paris had a crush on her too. Not to mention that she was the one he confided his problems to the most because whatever the trouble, Chat knew he could always call her for a helping paw. Chat always remembers her loving, gentle voice whenever he explains how harsh his dad is towards him and how after, always manages to bring a smile in his face with her embarrassing stories when she was little.
He would always laugh at her clumsiness at tripping over random objects and smile at her adorable giggles in between, often observing her little freckles on her cheeks that seem to pop out whenever she smiled. On the other hand, he became slightly envious of her family's close relationship as he yearned for a proper family. Subsequently the day after that came the reveal of both heroes planned by Master Fu. Adrien recalled his nervousness, worry about his partner not liking his identity, and spent a full hour prior to the reveal contemplating the idea. When the Ladybug suit became uncovered and Marinette stood in her place, Adrien couldn't be more overjoyed over the fact that it was his classmate and friend the whole time. Of course, they had to talk about the whole reveal thing afterwards, but when the time came for Adrien to ask Marinette about her feelings towards him, he held his breath in anticipation. After he received a quick, squeaky declaration of "She loves you" by Tikki and Marinette covering her burning face with her hands, it was safe to say that they began to date a couple of days later.
Even a furious Chloe storming up to them, proclaiming that Adrien was hers didn't stop him at all- in fact it made him protect her all the more. Marinette and Ladybug were the rainbow after the hurricane; the ray of sunshine he's never had. She's the reason his life became anything worthwhile.
And meeting her made him the luckiest Chat in the world.
