MatchMaking Kwamis

A MIRACULOUS Fanfic

Mini Series

PART TWO

It was the heartbeat that changed everything.

This, however, wasn't anything new to Marinette, she could count the moments like this one on all of her hands and feet. In fact in the last year since she'd become Ladybug she'd quickly lost count of the breath taking, life changing near death moments that changed everything…and yet…

This moment would forever top them all.

As she walked down the street to school she hugged her books close as a comfort, she was tired and confused. Her nightly visits from Cat Noir on her balcony had grown conflicting feelings for him. She was sure she still loved Adrien, and yet there was something drawing her to Cat Noir…like some sweet fragrance that lured her to him, evaporating any common sense or casualness.

Last night she'd found herself staring into his mesmerising green eyes and wondering what it would be like to kiss him. Okay, so to be fair, she'd kissed him once before when they had battled the Dark Cupid. Although she hadn't kissed him as Marinette and she'd only done it to save him! Break the spell and rescue Paris once again... and yet… it had sent her little heart pounding. It was a moment she secretly treasured, so secretly that most days she pretended it meant nothing.

Kissing him as Marinette would change things. It hadn't even been this complicated when her father had caught them on the balcony with baby August after saving Paris again and had assumed they were an item. She'd been clear of her feelings then….but now….?

Too caught up in her own world Marinette missed the construction work going on right outside her school. She blindly walked right passed the warning signs and nearly collided with the metal cautioned off fence around the construction.

At the last second Tiki called out from her hiding place in her bag.

"Marinette look out!"

Marinette startled from her troubled thoughts and looked up but it was too late, she turned abruptly trying to avoided hitting the fence, she missed it only just and tumbled around her books flying from her hands to land with a clutter on the footpath.

Everyone was arriving and they all turned at Marinette's startled cry of surprise. They gathered on the large steps that lead into the school, all too far away to help and could only watch as Marinette tried to regain her balance.

It didn't work and as Adrien, arrived getting out of his father's car Marinette tripped over her own feet, slipped on the curb and tumbled right into him.

In a moment of pure chance and timing they collided in the most unexpected way. Their lips meeting unintentionally in a brief but connected kiss.

Cradled in Adrien's arms saved from her fall Marinette looked up at the boy she'd loved for months, her face turning red as she tried to hide how she was trembling. Mortified and yet…overjoyed.

Caught up in the moment that seemed to encompass them both in a private bobble Adrien followed his undefined instincts and leaned in a properly kissed her.

The brief accidental contact lured him in with its sweet familiarity.

Of course he couldn't recall when he'd ever kissed her for it to seem so familiar…so right.

Marinette could.

Her embarrassment collided with recognition as the thrill swept through her. Adrien was kissing her. Each of them standing by his father's car in front of everyone at school he was kissing her!

She moaned in delight certain she was dreaming….desperately hoping she was and that she'd never wake up. This couldn't be true. Couldn't be happening, couldn't mean what she desperately hoped and yet feared it meant. For along with the thrill came the startling inconceivable and yet undeniable truth.

The taste of his lips was familiar to her too. Sweet and alluring, intoxicating ever without the cursive black lipstick. His kiss was powerful and it drew her in like a calm shore only to drag her under in a wave of delight and hunger.

All this was something she'd experienced before, something she'd tried for months to ignore because the last time she'd tasted the sweet heaven of such a lover's kiss was when she'd been kissing Cat Noir!

Still caught in their own world she felt his hands cup her face and draw her closer. Giggling in her delight she covered his hands with hers and like a nagging parent the truth tried to persuade her from the equally superb dream. Feeling the cold, almost sharp edges of his ring beneath her fingers.

His ring.

It was Cat Noir's ring, she felt sure.

OhMyGosh OhMyGosh OhMyGosh OhMyGosh!

This can't be true!

She didn't know what to think. Eventually after mere moments that blissfully seemed longer the pair broke apart to the bemusement of their classmates having witnessed their all to precious and private moment.

Blushing profusely Marinette abruptly stood back, tried to smile the event away as nothing but couldn't meet his eye as she turned and bolted from the school leaving her books and Adrien behind her. She ran and ran not caring for where she was going she just ran.

This couldn't be happing!

Adrien stood stunned unsure how to process what had just happened. Marinette was his friend….then again had he not been thinking about what it would be like to kiss her last night on her balcony? When he'd been Cat Noir, but he felt sure that he loved Ladybug….

What did this mean? What kind of person was he to profess his love for one girl and then so thoroughly and publicly kiss another….

Looking past the haze of confusion and the dizzying effects of the kiss he saw that his fellow school students were staring, some were gasping in surprise, Chloe was being held up by Sabrina and her friends emphatically fanned her with a text book. She was in a dramatic panic attack at the events that had taken them all by surprise. Nino and Alya were cheering, Alya even held her camera in her hand, having filmed the entire event! Adrien groaned. Then a memory caught his train of thought and it perplexed him even more. It didn't feel real and yet it screamed truth at every word.

He remembered a moment….or did he…. Alya had been filming him once before and he had just kissed Ladybug…

The moment seemed all too strong even as it seemed allusive. It was blurry and unreal, true and yet dreamlike….

Many blocks later a puffed out Marinette hid behind a pillar half way to the Eiffel Tower. Gasping, covering her face and almost crying unsure really why. If his response to her kiss was anything to go by Adrien seemed to like her too….if he really was Cat Noir, he said he loved Ladybug….but he didn't know she was Ladybug so did that mean his feelings were lies….

"Marinette it's going to be okay."

Tiki tried to comfort her, popping her little red head out of the bag to speak to a devastated Marinette.

That attempt at comfort broke the dam.

"How could it ever be okay Tiki? I just kissed Adrien and ….and…"

Too overwhelmed and excited she couldn't understand what she was feeling. The first kiss had been a mistake, an accident, a foolish case of bad – or good – timing…but then he'd kissed her back! What did that mean? Did he….was he…

Marinette continued to hide behind the pillar in tears. His kiss had brought back memories and feeling's she'd told herself she had no right to remember or feel. He had tasted like sugar and honey and even fire. The best macarons, at the same time as the spiciest meal. It was such a heady mixture of fire and sweets. Passion and excitement. It had been twice as powerful as when she'd kissed him to break him from Dark Cupids spell….but If Adrien really was Cat Noir….what did that mean? She could never look at him again, not as Adrien or Cat Noir….All the foolish things she should have noticed and it was his kiss that showed her the truth!

Overcome with emotion she fell to her knees and cried. Full devastated and confused tears that broke her heart in two even as it unwittingly mended it. Then many moments later she got up in a more caging daze than before and simply walked, and walked. Her mind running through the months and months of times with both Adrien and Cat Noir, realising all the things she had been so clueless about, had missed or ignored. All these things, mannerisms, his eyes! His hair, all of it seemed so clear to her now. Adrien was Cat Noir!

She didn't realise that time had passed by or that the weather had turned cold and rainy. Tiki had tired to console or wake her from her trance many times worried that she'd get hurt, or fall ill from the cold rain. Tiki wanted to leave and find help but who could she go to? Master Fu?

It was almost night-time when Marinette realised she was lost out in the cold.

Brushing aside her tears and the rain she looked around her finally seeing for the first time in hours. Through her cold and delirium she'd walked to the outer suburbs of Paris and it was raging up such a storm that transport had been shut down.

"Oh, No Tiki. I don't know where I am."

Marinette was in a very bad situation, these suburbs were not the safest of the city...

Realising things had reach a dire point Tiki snuggled down in the bag and dialled Marinette's phone. She should call her parents, pretend to be a passer-by or something. Then again no one would be able to find them fast enough. Even now from outside the warmth and shelter of the small round bag Tiki could hear Marinette begin to cough and could feel her shiver with the cold.

There was only one person who could help them.

Across town Plagg sat on Adrien's bed worrying over his own master. The boy hadn't said a word to anyone since he got home. He'd been like a zombie in classes and had faked being ill to get out of his fencing and music lessons. Normally Plagg would have been proud of such rebellious actions but he feared the truth was far closer than it seemed. Adrien seemed to be in a trance. Dazed and confused, silent no matter what he'd tired. He flew over to Adrien's bedside and sat down. Unintentionally upon the boy's phone.

It rang a few moments latter startling him.

He let out a cry of surprise and jumped up. Adrien shortly stirred from his mindless slump on the bed and headed to the bathroom. His voice trailing brokenly behind him.

"Just ignore it Plagg I don't want to talk to anyone."

Plagg looked at the device and gasped. It read 'Marinette' calling.

He didn't dare answer but felt sure his master really should have.

This secret keeping of theirs was getting harder to handle. Why did they have to keep their identities secret? They at least should know.

Especially after that kiss!

The next time the phone buzzed it was a message.

Marinettesaid; its Tiki, Plagg I need you to answer the phone!

Plagg blinked surprised that Tiki was using her master's phone.

The next time it said Marinette calling he pressed answer….but said nothing.

"Plagg are you there?" Hearing his Sugar Cube's voice he knew that it wasn't a trick and then felt a surge of concern hit him. Though he'd never admit it.

"Good evening Sugar Cube. What can I do for you?"

"Not now Plagg! Marinette needs Adrien."

Plagg laughed.

"Yeah I'll say!" After that kiss the whole of Paris would be on fire.

"Nooo! I mean she's in trouble. She freaked out after what happened and now she's lost in the middle of a storm in Pairs! I can't call anyone else. She's too unwell to transform! You have to get Cat Noir! He can track her the fastest, I think she's really ill."

Affection for the young girl had Plagg worried. Pretending not to really care he told Tiki he would and then hung up. Flying across the room right through the bathroom door he found Adrien fully dressed sitting under the running water in the shower.

"Adrien?"

Plagg was confused.

"Go away Plagg I'm not worthy to be a superhero I'm nothing but a liar. I claim to love Ladybug and yet I betrayed her with Marinette."

The boy really did seem guilt stricken. Now more than ever they needed the truth.

Plagg flew right up to his master prepared to do what had never crossed his mind before, he took his little hand and slapped the boy across the face.

The action surprised them both. Adrien looked up suddenly cleared of his daze and looked at Plagg. Plagg jumped back surprised at what he'd just done and then he decided it had worked and that it would be best that he go with it.

"Enough of this! Marinette is in danger you need to go find her!"

Once Plagg's words hit home Adrien was on his feet slipping and sliding everywhere with his sneakers, his clothes socked through from his emotional state in the shower.

"Plagg we have to save her!"

As Adrien stumbled to get out of the shower without breaking his neck Plagg sighed. The boy shouldn't feel guilty or disloyal, he had more loyalty than a dog!, and he hadn't actually betrayed Ladybug at all…Plagg shook his head, it didn't matter they could work all that out later.

Adrien rushed to the window in his bedroom and saw just how bad the storm was. It was worse than the two times Stormy Weather had attacked Pairs.

No one would last long in this weather.

"Plagg claws out!"

Lost in the streets of Pairs Marinette felt her misery and confusion mix with an oncoming cold. She was weak and dizzy. Sneezing every few seconds. More than a little unnerved by the dark, underbelly streets she'd waded into. She was surprised that an Akuma hadn't found its way to her with such an overwhelming emotional distress that she'd been feeling…

"Tiki spots-"

"Marinette no! you're too weak…"

Marinette looked down at her Kwami friend barely able to see her through the pelting rain.

"Well, won't I be stronger as Ladybug? ~ achoo!~ besides if we transform, we can fly home. I can't figure out where we are from down here."

Tiki could understand but was too worried that the transformation would make her worse. She'd seen the catastrophic affects a simple cold could cause. After all, one her beloved Ladybugs had died because of a cold. It wasn't as harmless as many thought. It still could kill. Even today.

"I've already called someone to help Marinette just please sit down out of the rain as best you can. Cat Noir is one his way."

Marinette froze she slowly turned her head back down to her Kwami.

"WHAT NO! I can't! He …can't… I mean… Tiki how? Tiki what have you done? This isn't …I mean no. I.. I'm fine now I'll call my mom."

"Marinette LOOK OUT!"

Rummaging in her bag for her phone Marinette didn't realise she was crossing the road and the soul driver couldn't see a thing through the downpour, he'd just swerved to avoid hitting a power line and was forced into Marinette's path with no time to react.

The sound of tires screeching echoed in the night as Marinette looked up unable to get out of the way. Like a deer in headlights she was blinded by the light and couldn't move in time.

"MARINETTE!"

From out of the darkness Cat Noir flew in to save her but he was nearly too late. He managed to catch her in his arms and carry her away from danger but it was so close a call that her head still hit the side of the car's headlights.

The car skidded and then mounted the curb and crashed into a signpost. The driver was unharmed as he struggled from the car.

The same could not be said for Marinette.

Cat Noir landed agilely on his feet a few feet away from the car accident with an unconscious Marinette in his arm.

Kneeling on the ground he held her closer to him.

"Marinette? Marinette? Oh no!"

"Is she okay? Cat Noir?" The man asked franticly as he dug a phone out of his jean pocket to call for help.

Marinette remained lifeless in Cat Noir's arms.

"I don't know…..I'm going to take her to the hospital I can get her there faster."

Then without a word more he was gone. Disappearing into the night with his love.

As he raced across the rooftops of Pairs he could hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears louder, and louder, louder than the wind and rain. Within a moments time he landed in the light of the busy Emergency Department. He cared not for ceremony as he raced through the doors carrying Marinette.

"SOMEBODY HELP!" He tried to tell himself not to cry, not to let his emotions break under the crushing weight of his fear. Even so his words turned into a snarl. A frightfully demanding command.

"My friend needs help now!

Reacting like the good people they were, the doctors and nurses answered his cry rushing to them immediately.

He collapsed on the floor with Marinette still in his arms, the tears he fought to hold back broke free at the sight of all the blood teaming from her head. Mixing with the rain that had just been pelting down upon them. The blood on Marinette's head had seeped through her gorgeous blue hair, falling in abundance on the hospital floor. The cut on her forehead seeming to gap open wider than the Seine. Gushing blood endlessly over her clothes, him and the floor.

"Please help her!" He begged. As a number of medical staff rushed to his side, kneeling down to asses Marinette.

"Cat Noir what happened exactly?"

One Nurse asked, wearing a colourful pair of pants and a dark blue scrub top. Her expression soft but focused.

"I…I…I couldn't save her! I was too late.. .please tell me she'd not…. n…ot…" His heart broke over the mere thought it could be true, he couldn't even say it.

Whatever his feelings for Ladybug, Marinette was his friend he couldn't lose her.

"No Cat Noir she's alive but she's badly hurt what I need you to tell me what happened." Even as the Nurse spoke many others were bustling around them doing what they could to help. The Nurse coached Cat Noir to his feet as he held on to Marinette using his super human strength to lift her onto the bed that had been wheeled into the waiting room. Hands trembling he lay her on the bed and took a step back. Letting the medical teem get to work.

"Her name is Marinette Du Pen-Chang, she got lost in the storm and was nearly hit by an out of control car, I tired to get her to safety but she hit her head on the side of the car as we…Oh God! Marinette…I'm sorry!"

The Nurse turned to him then and placed a hand to his shoulder.

"It's okay Cat Noir, we'll take good care of her. You need to stop blaming yourself. We each have our jobs to do, yours was getting her here. Now please go with my colleague here she'll take you to the relatives room. Unless you have to be somewhere else I suggest you take a moment to relax, maybe have a hot drink. We'll take care of her. Do you know her parents?"

You do seem to know a lot about a girl you just rescued.

Nurse Anderson thought to herself….I suspect this is more than just hero's guilt. She'd seen it many times Doctors who in the heat of an emergency couldn't save a patient and felt responsible, this, however was more certainly personal.

"Please go with her." She instructed kindly. Casting one last look at the hero as he was led away by her colleague. She turned back to the young girl on the bed and instructed her team. They wheeled her through the emergency room doors.

"I've never seen Cat Noir like that before." Her other colleague Dave noted as they raced down the halls with the young girl.

"Yeah, well even heroes have loved ones, I just hope Hawk Moth doesn't find out about it. It seems to me that he's in love with the girl."

She cast a look over her shoulder at the closing doors and through the window she could see Cat Noir look back over his shoulder, such a panicked love-torn face, his striking green eyes riddled with pain.

"These superheroes really are too young for this work." She sighed. Her heart going out to the boy who'd put his life on the line to save them all too many times to count.

The least she could do was save the one he loved in return.

Turing back to the job at hand she was in full professional mode.

"Alright people let's get to work."
