Today was a pretty hectic day for me. After arriving from college I had to go to my parents house for the weekly family dinner. Which meant that instead of partying with my friends, I have to hear lecture from my parents for the entire evening.
So since I was in a rush I didn't bother to check the traffic lights. And before I could even realize it a truck had already hit my car. I didn't even have a chance to find out what happened and before I knew it I was already unconscious.
When I next opened my eyes I found myself lying on a sofa and a person sitting in the lone chair opposite me. As I sat up I realized that the room looked a lot like one of those therapist's office.
A polite cough interrupted my musing as the man in front of me said "Oh, I thought you would still be asleep. Well if you are up already, we can get this show on the road. "
Before I can ask the man what he was going on about he lifted his face and all my thoughts screeched to an immediate halt as the man in front of me turned out to be a skeleton with an expression of a smile on it's face. He was dressed in a black three piece suit with a matching black cane in its left hand tapping the floor gently.
The skeleton chuckles softly at my paling face as he said gently "The look on you mortal's face when you first see me, it never gets old. Ah, but no need to be afraid young man. I have no intention to hurt you, infact I've brought you here to provide you assistance. "
My heartbeat slowed as I realised that the most I can do in this bizarre situation is keep the skeleton talking. So I tentatively asked "What do you mean by help me? Where am I? And who are you, sir?" despite my plans to keep a cool head, with each question my voice rose in volume and by the end I was breathing heavily.
The skeleton looked amused by the outburst as it answers calmly "No need to get upset young man. I really do want to help you dear boy. Do you remember the last thing that happened before you arrive here?"
I searched immediately for the answer and it came to me like lightning. " I was going to my parents house for dinner. I remember checking my phone for any new messages from my friends. Suddenly there was a loud sound and then there was a brief feeling of pain in my body. And then I woke up here. What is going on? Was I in a accident? "
The skeleton expression turned sympathetic as he answered. "Your guess is correct my boy. Unfortunately you got hit by a drunk truck driver. "
At the frankly disturbing answer a numb feeling started spreading through my body and I shook my head in denial. " No, that can't be. If I was in an accident then how am I here and not in a hospital?"
He answered me in a soft voice. "I am afraid that the impact from the truck killed you immediately. And your soul is now here in limbo waiting to be judged by me".
I couldn't get my head around this ridiculous answer so I instead asked him " I don't know what you are on buddy. But I need to get out of here" saying that I tried to rise but it was like the couch was gripping me.
The skeleton looked at my actions with sad eyes and said. "You can't get out of here, child. I'm sorry, I know that it's hard for you to understand that your life is complete but you have to accept that you are dead. There is no going back for you. The only thing in you can control now is your future but for that you have to forget your past life and leave it behind."
With my whole heart I was hoping that it was all just a fancy dream and I was lying somewhere in a hospital bed. But somehow I knew that all the things the being in front of me had said were true. Sighing in rejection I asked the being in front of me. "So, if I'm dead are you here to decide whether I go to the heaven or hell? And who are you?"
The skeleton answered bluntly. "I'm Death. As for whether you go to heaven or hell that depends entirely on your decision. I could take you to tge afterlife if you are ready to rest. But on the other hand if you want to live, I might have another proposal for you".
I looked at Death like he was crazy. "Of course I still want to live. I mean who wants to die so young at my age. My whole life is still ahead of me. There are so many things that I want to achieve. So, please send me back to my home".
Death looked at me with pity and said in a soft voice. "I'm afraid you cannot go back to your own life child as your body in the material plane is beyond repair. However if you truly desire I can grant you a new life."
Till that moment I have never felt so much hate for a person as I felt for him in that moment "Then why give me false hope. If I can't go back to my life. Then what was the point of all of this? Do you want me to reborn as a baby?"
Death shook its head in negative. "No not rebirth. That is not my intention. As you know in your world there is a lot of pop culture based around the multiverse theory. What if I told you that in reality, there really is a multiverse out there. What if I send you to one such universe to start a new life? Would you accept life in that world?".
I looked at death with a tiny flame of hope rising in my heart and asked hesitantly "Which universe?"
Death answers with a smile. "The Harry Potter universe. As you know each universe has its own alternate realities. In one such reality Harry Potter dies saving Ginny from the cluches of the horcrux diary. In this reality despite Fawkes's best efforts the poison enters the boy's bloodstream too fast and killed him and the horcrux residing in his brain. Which in turn meant that Voldemort continue to defy me. If you'll accept my offer. I'll insert your soul in this Harry's body just as his and the horcrux's soul have left the body. I'll combine your soul with whatever soul of Harry is still intact. This will give you all of Harry's memories and mannerisms. But with that also comes a catch. While the majority of the soul will be yours. Harry would still become a part of you. His pain will become your own pain and his happiness will become your own happiness. So, what I am implying is that you would essentially become a new Harry. You won't remember your past life. You won't remember your family, your friends not even your true name. But you'll remember all the meta-knowledge of your new world. I won't take them from you if you wish".
I looked at Death shrewdly and asked. "And what will I have to do in place of Harry? Surely there must be a task that you want me to perform for you."
Death didn't try to deny that he has ulterior motives and answered calmy. "I don't care about what you do with your life once you have made Voldemort mortal. You can retire for a life full of luxury and comfort or you can become the greatest Dark lord that world will ever see. That's your life and your own choice. All I want in return for providing you a chance of a new life are the scattered pieces of Voldemort's soul".
Internally I couldn't help the sense of wonder and joy that passed through my being. I mean who wouldn't want to be a part of Harry Potter universe. And here I was getting it served on a platter. But still I wanted to cover all my bases so I asked death carefully.
"And what about the Deathly Hallows. Can I collect them? Won't you be offended if I got them under my control?"
Here Death's face twisted into a grimace. "I don't understand you mortals. How can you even imagine that you can deceive a being like me. The hallows are in that world because I allow it".
At my surprised expression Death continued his explanation. "I'm not the only death child. I am a personification of it. There are a lot of cruel avatars of Death who would destroy entire worlds if somebody even thought to insult them. You are lucky I'm the one who is with you, others of my kind would not even care a lick about someone like you".
Ignoring my gobsmacked expression he continued. "The world I am sending you to is much large and dangerous than you imagine child. This Voldemort is not the only threat you might face if you decide to go there. The only reason I am doing this is because a horcrux is a anathema to me. It is against the natural order to divide one's soul for immortality. I have no problem with expanding one's lifespan but it can never be achieved like this. So, you need to understand that this world is real and not a story. It has a rich history filled with terrible beings you can't even imagine. This is a world where power is everything. Without power you are a pawn in everyone's game".
"Since you are so interested in the Hallows allow me to provide you the truth about their origins. The peverell brothers were one of the world's leading necromancers of their time. Infact I don't think that any other person has ever been more gifted in the art than them. They had spent their entire life dedicated to me and the art of necromancy. They each had their own ambitions. Because of their dedication to me I imbued their inventions with a fraction of my power. Antioch had wanted a wand which would never fail it's true wielder, so I gave my power to the wand he wielded. Cadmus was always fascinated with the history. He wanted to meet the legendary magicians of the past so I made it possible by imbuing his stone with my essence. He spend his remaining life with the ghosts of old learning ancient magics. But Ignotus he was the one I favored the most. He was never afraid of me. He just wanted something that would protect him and his family from his enemies. That's why I charmed his cloak. As long as it's owner was under its protection no one not even death itself will ever be able to find them".
For a minute I was unable to speak, the story that Death has just told me it provided a lot of insight to the Harry Potter stories. But some things from the story were still troubling me. " You said that the elder wand will never fail it's master. But Dumbledore was able to win it from Grindelwald. And Harry was caught many times wearing his cloak by Moody and Dumbledore".
Here Death laughed and clicked his tongue at me. "You were not paying full attention. I said the objects will only serve their true master. Grindelwald and Dumbledore and countless others might have wielded the wand but they were never it's true owner. Only someone with Peverell blood in their veins would be able to unlock the full potential of the hallows. To use the hallows you need to shed some of your blood on the objects and identify yourself as a peverell. Otherwise even someone with the right bloodline will also be using the items as their bastardized version".
At my amazed expression Death chuckled in amusement. "You or rather Harry have many ancestors who have made artifacts of incredible power, young man. Do you think they would let anyone outside of their family benefit from their hard work? The Peverell bloodline has produced many who have changed the world with their every actions".
"Antioch while very brilliant in magic but he was also a big braggart. After I had fulfilled their wishes he had in his drunken state revealed the achievement of him and his brothers to the people of some random inn. His boasts regarding the powers of the Hallows spreaded in the magical community like fire. Every ambitious magician who heard of the Hallows, wanted the power of these artifacts for their own purposes. And just a week later after his boasting, Antioch infact was killed by one such person in his sleep before he could ever truly use the wand's power against his enemies. He died before siring any child. When the news of his death reached Cadmus and Ignotus, for the safety of their families, they vanished from the magical society. Soon, the Hallows became nothing more than a wild tale and eventually faded from everyone's memories".
"However centuries later the wand's legend rose to a prominence never seen before when one of Ignotus's descendant acquired the elder wand and unlocked it's full potential. The destruction he brought on his enemies with the wand made the whole magical world tremble before him. Everyone in the magical community understood that the myth regarding the Hallows were true. The only reason he was defeated was by treachery, when his enemies found themselves unable to defeat him, they killed his defenseless family save for his three year old granddaughter who survived because she was out somewhere with him. For the fear of the end of his bloodline, he hid her away with his best friend Linchfred Potter. He gave her a new name and then for her safety got defeated in a duel by one of his enemies. He knew the wand would never accept true allegiance of anyone outside of his family. So, while he was killed his actions made sure that the girl survived. She eventually married the son of her grandfather's friend. And hence the last of that bloodline is still alive through Harry. After that many people have wielded the Elder wand and while it has served them and made them a legend in history, no one has ever been able to use the full might of its power."
The story Death told me had me mesmerized. However I still had some questions. "Why did the Slytherin family never recognized the resurrection stone for what it was, if the Hallows were that famous?"
Death answered "Cadmus's only had a single daughter. His wife died in the childbirth. The Peverell family were never rich. But they always were gifted in magic. Their Family magics were one of the most powerful magic in the whole world. Cadmus was always very proud of his family's achievements. In those ages, only a male heir was deemed suitable to continue the family line. Female after marriage always had to take their husband's name".
"So, after his wife's death, Cadmus's realised that the lordship of the family after his death must pass on to his brother Ignotus or Ignotus's son. Since, the brothers had spend almost 60 years together to make the Hallows they were always close. He knew that Ignotus's descendants would make the family name great."
"He never wanted anyone else outside of the Peverell family to have the power of the ressurection stone. That's why he never told his own daughter of it's function or the real way to use it. Because in his eyes she could not advance the Peverell legacy."
"However he was afraid that he might die before he could give the resurrection stone to Ignotus. So, he fashioned the stone in a ring, so in the case of his untimely death no one else would be able to use the stone"
"As he had feared, before he could pass the stone to Ignotus he died. After his death while the Slytherin family acquired the stone with Cadmus's only daughter marrying in that line. They never thought of it anything other than a priceless heirloom."
"The family magic after the death of Cadmus had made Ignotus the lord of his house. And, all the secrets and knowledge of the Peverell family came under the control of Ignotus and his descendants but he was unable to locate Cadmus's daughter as she had left the house after her father's death. And hence, the resurrection stone remained with her and her descendants."
"That's why Family magics even now are considered so sacred. It is the culmination of the achievement of all the members a magical family has produced. Any Family safeguards it's Family magic with utmost zealously".
I nodded my head to show that I understood the legacy that I am going to become the sole heir of. "What happened to the girl after she married in the Potter family?"
Daeth answered. "When Maria Peverell married your ancestor Jonathan she brought the invisibility cloak with her. Her grandfather had bequeathed the cloak to her to keep her safe from dangers but since at that time she was a child, she forgot that she had to teach the ceremony her grandfather had performed with her, to her children for them to unlock the true power of it. That's why Harry was caught many times. The Potters never thought of it anything other than an ordinary invisibility cloak. Dumbledore had charmed his glasses and Mad-Eye's eyes with the elder wand. Both are equal in terms of powers but since a wand is far more versatileartifact than a cloak, the cloak could sometimes prove inferior against the other".
"So, if you want to collect the Hallows do so at your own peril, boy. But remember that unlocking any of their true power will bring the enemies you might not want to face on your head. While it has been more than 1100 years since Maria married Jonathan Potter. Nowadays, the Hallows are regarded as children's stories. But some of her grandfather's enemies or their descendants might still be alive. They will remember the power of the elder wand under the control of a Peverell. Right now they think that the Peverell line is extinct but any of the Hallows emergence in the world will disabuse them of that notion. They will stop at nothing less than killing you."
I rubbed my sudden sweat covered hands on the couch as I said tentatively. " That was quite the story, Death. I'll take your advice regarding the Hallows to heart. First I accept your offer to combine my soul with Harry. However I have some final questions if you could answer them then it would be quite helpful". At Death's nod I continued "I don't want to come off as ungrateful and greedy but since Harry Potter universe doesn't have a lot of magic that can be done without the use of wands. I was hoping if I can get the ability to do magic from the Doctor strange movies?"
Death looks at me amusedly and answers. "How do you know that wandless magic is impossible? Magic doesn't manifest from a wand or a staff, boy. It manifest from within the witch or wizard or from the nature. A wand is only a tool my boy, it helps you to channel your magic. There are thousands of witches and wizards in Africa and all over the world who don't use wands to do magic. If you train extensively for this goal you can do it as well".
I thought carefully for a few seconds before answered "Very well that is good to know. And thanks, for this new chance at life. I'll always be grateful."
Death nodded pleased. "You are welcome, child. I hope that you will be able to fulfill your wishes in this new life. Now enough, lie down on the couch so I can send you on your way."
I nodded and with a deep breath laid back down on the couch and closed my eyes. The next moment there was a hint of disorientation like I was on a roller coaster ride and my eyes opened to see a magnificent red bird watching me carefully.
