Booth stared, gobsmacked. His mouth hung opened as his eyes stayed glued to the sight at the other side of the restaurant. How… Who… What… Why...

He couldn't even gather his thoughts.

"Wow," the attractive blonde at his side said. "He's cute. He must be Temperance's date."

Booth turned a furious glare on the girl that had looped her arm through his. "You knew Bones had a date tonight?"

Hannah blinked. "Well, she mentioned it when we had lunch yesterday. I assumed she had mentioned to you as well."

"No, she did not," he ground out, glaring back at the oblivious couple.

"Okay. What's the big deal?"

"Bones always tells me when she has a date."

Hannah said something, but Booth didn't hear her. He was too busy trying to burn a hole in the unknown man's skull.

Hannah pulled him, and he reluctantly followed her to the bar. He couldn't help himself as he continued to look over his shoulder as Bones and her date talked, their faces close together. A churning of jealousy swelled up within him, and he shoved it down, angry at himself. He was in love with Hannah. He shouldn't care if Bones was on a date with some guy who was obviously unworthy of her.

Hannah talked to him all night. Booth tried to pay attention, but his gaze kept going back to Bones.

Finally, even Hannah deflated. "Seeley, I'm trying to be understanding, but a girl can get a complex when her boyfriend stares at another girl all night long."

Booth sighed and slumped his shoulders. "I'm sorry. You don't deserve it."

"No, I do not. Seeley, are you jealous of Temperance's date?"

Booth thought about lying to her, but what was the point? He acted like a jealous ex-boyfriend the whole night, and Hannah wasn't an idiot. "Yes."

"Do you love Temperance?"

Seeley glanced over his shoulder again. The man had his head thrown back as he let out a big laugh. Bones was smiling, but there was a shadow in her eyes, and he knew she wasn't enjoying herself, which meant she wasn't truly interested in the man. That made him feel better, and it made it easier to tell Hannah the truth. "When we met, I told you about a girl. I told this girl I love her, and she rejected me. Then I told her I had to move on."

"And Temperance is that girl."

Booth sighed. "I thought I was over her. I really did. But seeing her with another guy, it's Sully all over again."

Hannah raised an eyebrow, probably not understanding the reference, but not asking for clarification. "Okay, so what do you do? Do you think you'll be able to forget about her?"

Booth looked into Hannah's eyes. "I want to say yes. You're great, and I'd be a fool to let you go, but I don't want to lie to you or myself more than I already have. And I'm not sure I'll ever be able to move on from Bones and you deserve better than a 'maybe.'"

Hannah closed her eyes. "I understand. I thought I saw something between the two of you, but I made myself believe I was imagining it. I'm a journalist. I should have gone with my instinct. It would have saved both of us a lot of time." She stood up, her blonde bangs shielding her eyes from his view.

"I'm sorry, Hannah."

"I know, Seeley. I'll be out of the apartment tonight." She stepped away from the table and turned to go but hesitated. "Seeley, you should tell Temperance you haven't moved on. I said I saw something between the two of you. What I saw wasn't one-sided. You should tell her before it's too late."

Booth watched her go and wondered, 'Do I still have a chance with Bones?'
