AN: I am so sorry! I thought I had Arizona mention her dinner dates name. I was reading everyone's comments and was like - what are you all talking about. Then I realize I removed that line in an edit because I didn't like the way it flowed in the conversation, but never put back a line where Arizona says her name. I AM SOOOO SORRY. I promise her identity is revealed in this chapter. And in this CHAPTER many things will start to be revealed - maybe. LOL - ENJOY
*** Callie POV ***
When we saw that things were starting to wrap up Jared and I went to the back of the house. We heard through our earpieces the front door open and Arizona says goodnight. The front door closed and then silence. Jared and I entered through the back door.
"That was interesting."
She jumps at the sound of my voice. Kicking her shoes off by the front door with her back still towards us she then turns around and walks right towards me. She wraps her arms around my neck and buries her face into my neck. Her embrace was very tight. Her breathe was warm against the side of my neck, the warmth prickling my ear as she exhaled. The weight of her emotions cascading over me as she melted into me.
"Hey everything is ok, you are safe, you were always safe," I reassure her as I hold her and rub her back. Looking over her shoulder, I look at Jared with a questioning look.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I ask.
"Yeah," she mumbles into my shoulder. "But I need a drink."
Jared turns away from us and walks into the other room. I guide the two of us into the living room and see Jared pick up the remanence of her evening, then make his way into the kitchen.
I sit down on the couch first and pat the space next to me. Arizona scoots the skirt of her dress up and very ungracefully falls down on the couch next to me. She tugs her legs up underneath her and leans into my side.
"I am just so glad the evening is over with," Arizona said. "That was so exhausting, more exhausting than I thought it would be."
At that moment Jared walked in with three glasses, he sat down all three on the table in front of us and sat on the chair across from us.
"The house is secured, the team is out front and all is set for the night. The mics are all silenced and we can talk freely," Jared said, picking up his glass and sipping his drink.
I realized then I don't think I have ever seen him drink.
A muffled "Thank you," came from my shoulder. Arizona then sat up and leaned over to the table and picked up her drink and mine leaned back and handed me my drink while taking a sip of her own.
After her sip, she looked at both of us and said, "where do you want to start?"
"Well we have attacked this entire thing like a typical operation, so let's debrief as such," said Jared.
"Thoughts," I said.
"She played it cool, very typical. We will need to replay the tapes to listen to any hesitations or any subtle hints that she knew or has any idea of what the back plot really is," she said, "if there is one."
"And as for Mel," I say taking another sip of my drink.
"Well if they are working together, she may or may not brief her. Arizona didn't leak her suspicions any more than she already has in our own briefings," Jared said.
"Mel already agreed to have dinner with me here at the house," Arizona continued, "which also doesn't make sense. If everything is monitored and you did it, why would you want our dinner to be monitored?"
"Well, same with tonight. If she was the ring leader or in on it, why would you want a recording of the meeting?" I interjected.
"Unless the monitoring is preset and whoever is doing it can turn off the mics depending on when they want something to be recorded," Jared mentioned. "For example," he continued, "When we had dinner all together after the poisoning, we openly discussed the new security process and a plan to figure out who planned it and our thoughts on everything."
"Is anyone else worried that she is on the inside and is supposed to be one of the good guys?" I mention out of nowhere.
"Yes," both Arizona and Jared say in unison.
"Jared?" Arizona questions.
"Yes."
"Do you think it is wise to get her to go with us to Denmark with us?" Arizona asks.
"Possibly," Jared says "Mainly, we leave in two days, I doubt she has enough time to mobilize her team to do anything while we are overseas. This will give us enough time to isolate her and figure out what she knows and how if any is she associated with this conspiracy."
"HA, Drink you said the word!" I say laughing! Nearly falling forward breaking the intense moment. My laughter cracking the harshness of the heavy air that had weighed itself around us.
"What?" Arizona looks at both of us.
"Oh, Callie had this crazy thought that every time one of us said the 'C' word," Jared said while air quoting the C, "we had to take a drink. We were drinking water in the van while you were having dinner so it was funny then. But agreed." He finished and then took a drink.
Arizona sat up, with a weird look on her face not sure if it was humor, anger or something in between.
"Wait so I am in here putting my life on the line and my best friend and soon to be wife are fricken making a drinking game out of my life," Arizona ranted, standing up, "what the hell is wrong with you two."
"Wait what ..." we both sputter out standing up with her.
"You consider me your best friend," Jared jumps in with.
"Jared, shut it," I say stepping in between him and Arizona trying to wrap my head around what she just said. Standing in front of her, I put my hands on both of her shoulders and look into her eyes, "Did you just call me your soon to be wife?"
"What?" Arizona huffed, "Callie, god, what, ugh no this isn't how I wanted to say something to you. Yes I consider you to one day being my wife." She finished almost in tears.
I looked at her with joy and excitement and every other emotion I can think of. I am in so much shock. I promised her when we rekindled our relationship so many months ago, that I would forever be hers. Actually more like when I finally told her she had my heart the night she won the presidency, that not only did she I love her but I was always in love with her and had always loved her since we met when we were kids. UGH this women is the death of me.
"Airzona, look I don't care if this is not how you pictured this all happening. My question to you is this, do you think about spending the rest of you life with me?" I simply ask her.
"Yes."
Time stands still.
I lean forward and press my lips to hers. Fully completely. Sealing the words that have been spoken from her lips to mine making sure that that they will forever be sealed between us. I know in the back on my mind when they have spoken again in a more formal way with a ring and the pomp and circumstance that the night will be magical. But tonight, the way she looks. The honesty, the passion the sincerity in her voice her eyes will never ever be captured again. Tonight, in this flustered moment is my Arizona, not the polished politician or straight-laced military-trained woman but Arizona, my Arizona.
With our foreheads pressed together, we peeled apart our lips. Taking a deep breath she pulled back and opened her eyes.
"Calliope, I love you. And when this whole craziness is over and we can breathe I do want to marry you. If I could I would go back in time and walk back into that pub in Germany and change our past. But I can't, but I can show you and make you feel and know how much I love you. I hope you know that."
"Arizona, I know. And if I could go back in time, I would never have let you leave the airport in the first place without telling you how I really felt. We were so young and so stupid. So let's just figure out this crap and make our lives our own," I say, leaning forward and kissing her lips, "I love you." I say into her lips.
We hear a voice clearing from behind us and then I remembered that Jared was still in the room.
"Shit, Jared, I forgot."
"I realized that Callie," Jared says chuckling. "Do you to mind us finishing our debrief on this evening?"
"Oh, no Jared, yes let's finish," Arizona said. "I am sorry. And to answer your earlier question, Yes. I consider you to be one of my best friends. You have been with me for over ten years. How else could I not consider you a close if not best friend?"
"Thank you," Jared said.
"At times, you are closer to me than my own brother," Arizona said as she moved towards him and wrapped her arms around him and hugged him. He awkwardly returned the hug.
"Thank you, Arizona, I feel the same."
"Soooo," I say. "What shall we do about the trip this week."
"Your coming right?"
"I am?" I remark.
"Well, you are coming," Arizona stated again, then turning to Jared. "One of the issues is Global housing and homeless we can figure out a way to include her in the lineup, right."
"It really isn't up to me, but we can talk to Bailey tomorrow and I will make the arrangements. But how will we make everything go the way we want it to if Callie is there?" Jared said.
"She already knows that we are together so it really won't make a difference?" I say.
"True, but what about Mel, she doesn't know we are together?" Arizona mentions.
"What if we stage something?" Jared says.
"What?"
"I don't know what if we set the two of them up, then we could figure out their alliance, if there is one," Jared suggested.
"True we could. The summit would be one of the most remote and secure events we could ensure control," I suggested. Looking at Arizona, she looked like she was muling over the suggestions and thinking through the strategies.
"This could work," Arizona said.
"We need to figure this entire thing out, I never thought we could play the two of them against each other," Jared said sitting down and pouring each of us another drink.
"The interesting thing is if they are working together or not it will still catch them or reveal elements of their plan or plans regardless if we plan this outright," Arizona said, sitting back down also taking a big drink from her glass.
"Are we staying here tonight?" I ask, "or are we heading back to the big house?"
Everyone laughed at my comment.
"We should probably head back to the WhiteHouse," Arizona said. "If I don't end up checking back in after our dinner tonight, Sana may get suspicious."
"True," I said finishing my drink and standing up. "I didn't hear her response to your request for her to go to Denmark, it was mumbled. I know we will replay it and I know what I think she said given the rest of the conversation but what was her initial reaction?"
Arizona paused for a moment when I asked her. She looked up at me smiled and looked down at her drink. She then in one full gulp finished the glass and stood up. She smoothed out wrinkles that weren't there, which was her own nervous niche. And turned to me.
"Sana agreed to come to Denmark this week," Arizona said, "she was relatively excited that I requested that she accompany me."
And there it was the Politician Arizona slipping into place. It amazes me how she can be so open with me and then slip into the polished politician. But really at this moment, I knew I was putting her on the spot, I heart the conversation between her and Sana when she asked her to come to Denmark. It was uncomfortable to listen to but we had talked about it before it happened and I knew how it was going to play out, the only way to get her to play into her hand was to lure Sana into the trap was to make her think that Arizona was interested in her romantically. Yes, it may be cruel but only if Sana is not involved in the plot to kill Arizona, and if she doesn't thank hopefully she will understand why we had to do this. We had to protect Arizona.
"Callie?" she calls me pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Yes."
With her hand-out, beckoning me to come with her, "are you coming home with me?"
"Of course," I say smiling up at her putting my hand in her and standing up. Kissing her hand and following her and Jared out the back door after closing up, we headed home together.
