~*~The Secret~*~
"W-what is your name?" They asked the girl in a whisper. Thinking, she answered.
"Um.Catherine. What's yours?" The blonde girl asked with uneasiness. She didn't know what her name was, but she felt like it was better not to tell, even if she did know it. She wasn't sure if she could trust this child, but they seemed harmless enough and starving. The boy stood up, and went over to the bedroom door. Catherine thought that he was probably only a year or so younger than she was. At least her age was something she could remember. Her birthday was the 21st of June, and she was presently 14 years old, the girl thought over.
Ignoring her question, the boy opened the wooden door, and turned to face her.
"Breakfast will be served soon. Ma says you're to wash." The boy stuttered and ran out of the room. Catherine wondered where she was, and how she had gotten there. Her mind was blank of memories.
She lifted the bag the boy had thrown to her earlier, and sat it beside the bed. Opening it, she found some clothes, food, and little money. Catherine changed into an old shirt and breeches. When she left the room, she suddenly could smell all of the sweat scents of the kitchen.
"Ah.I see you're finally up. Well.come on girl. Sit down beside Adam here." The woman standing at the table said. She was a short and thick lady. Her grey hair was long, and tied back in a bun. She had on an old, dark blue dress and apron.
She smiled at Catherine, and motioned for her to sit next to the small boy. Her looked up at the girl and played with his fingers. His mother scolded him for not washing before eating, and Catherine glanced down at her own dirty hands. The lady saw this, and spoke calmly now.
"Don't worry about it child. I usually don't care whether that boy washes or not, but soon he'll be leaving home...to become a knight of King Jonathan." The woman sighed and then added, "I'll miss him for sure, but this is his dream. Who am I to stand in his way?" Catherine caught a blush on the woman's face. "Oh my. I quit forgot. My name is Sarah. I'm Adam's grandmother..his parents died a few years ago. You see, his mother died of fever sometime after he was born, and his father was killed in a war years ago..What am I doing? Sorry if I'm being odd, but once you get me talking, it takes a while for me to shut up. You're probably hungry. Am I right?" Catherine nodded and the Sarah gave her a big plate of bacon and eggs.
Adam came back into the room, and Sarah checked his hands. Catherine looked around the small kitchen. It was dusty and to small. How could this be she thought. Only nobles can become knights, at least, I thought so. Sarah guessed what Catherine was thinking again, and she didn't hesitate to answer.
"Yes.we're not nobles, but- can I trust you with a secret?" Catherine stared at this woman. She seemed so confident and trusted a stranger. The girl nodded again and Sarah closed the shutters of the windows. Lighting a candle, and sat down at the table.
