I had to hand it to the teenager. That was the smoothest sneak out I've ever been apart of. Of course I knew he was gonna sneak out when he made a big show of putting his keys downstairs, he never did that. And as the shower turned off I kept Jake a bit more focused on my insane questions so the kid had a shot of getting out of the house before the big bad wolf caught him. My head was still struggling to wrap around the information we had just heard but I used that to my advantage. I had heard the tribal stories at the bonfires with Billy of course. At that time however, I thought they were just legends. I stopped myself from drinking anymore beer, knowing I had to go rescue Emmett once Jacob realized he was no longer in the house. Which in all honesty, happened a heck of a lot sooner than I expected. It was pretty comical to watch the tall, dark skinned man to run upstairs and bang the door open, cursing before running downstairs and letting me in on his findings. I acted shocked and promised to go grab him, promising if I had any issues at all to call the pack for backup. If I wasn't a highly decorated Police Chief I'd be a hell of an actor.
The drive to the Cullens Mansion was slow, as I purposefully took a few wrong turns to let the kid have a bit longer. I wasn't too sure what I was suppose to be expecting as I drove down the drive, parking the cruiser and getting out, heading to the front door which opened upon my arrival.

The Chief looked sheepish but not scared as he took me in. His moustache twitched as if he was holding back a laugh before he brushed past me, leaving me slightly confused on what had just conspired. I closed the door behind him and followed him, stopping as he made himself comfortable in the dining room. I once again offered the McCarty man a beverage which he graciously accepted as well as the cookies. I sat down next to him, feeling out of place as I waited for the human to take the lead.
"Well, they going to come down here to talk like civilized hum—" Charlie stopped before shaking his head. "Civilized beings?" I stared a moment longer before speaking at a normal tone, asking Bella to come downstairs. "She could hear that? I could barely hear you!"
"Yea, enhanced hearing." I tapped my ear twice and listened to the hushed voices upstairs freeze. Awesome, now I get to meet and deal with a dad talk. Edward, you better be on my team. Bella's voiced echoed in his mind before he smiled at Charlie. "They are on their way."
Watching Bella and Emmett head downstairs, you would have never realized one was a vampire. Bella was graceful albeit slow in her walk, her long hair blowing behind her as she avoided Emmett who was taunting her the whole way down. Chief and I watched in amusement as Emmett made faces behind her back the whole time, seeming to be mimicking their argument from earlier. The pair made it to the table and both sat down across from each other as if they were prepared for a lecture and a grounding, typical teenagers. I honestly wasn't sure what I was about to witness, Charlie's thoughts changing on a whim every two-seconds.
"So, obviously we know. Which is a big deal! But we are also here, so not a deal breaker." Charlie started, trailing off as he looked between Emmett and Bella. "I guess a good place to start is how does this change things?"
"How does this change things? Sir, you found out your son has been hanging out with werewolves and vampires, the type of things that go bump in the dark, and you are wondering how it changes things?" Bella started, shaking her head and looking at me with wide eyes.
"I think what my charming sister means is, what would you like it to change? We aren't your typical vampires. We call ourselves vegetarians since we don't drink human blood. If we truly were a threat, I think you would have been finding a lot more drained bodies, which I assure you if you were, they weren't from us. Now, since Jacob chose to tell you our secret, I think it's only fair we get to warn you about the danger he just put you in. In the Vampire world we have three kings who rule everything. It's a sacred rule that our kind aren't allowed to tell humans about us as it's a threat to our kind. Truthfully, I don't believe will have issues with that one, Aro is wrapped around Bella's little finger. She could do no wrong in his eyes. HEY!" I was kicked abruptly in the shin and it hurt which meant only Bella could have done it.
"Edward, you're making things worse."
"No, Edward, you are making everything great. Since Bella has already decided to give up on any idea of us both staying here and being friends, I'd like to hear your side of things."
"You're making it seem like you just found out we are British. We are Vampires. Literally designed to kill you for our survival, and you're upset that I've decided to spare your life."
"But you won't hurt me. I know it, Edward knows it, hell even my dad knew you wouldn't hurt me when he decided to walk into your house like he owned the place." Charlie had the decency to look guilty at Emmetts comment before he whipped his head to hear Bella's counter argument .
"Ugh, what is it with men never getting the point. I could still hurt you. I tried to catch you and managed to bruise you. What if one day we are hanging out and I just forget about my strength and crush you? What then?"
"Well, then I'd be dead." If looks could kill, the glare Bella sent Emmett would have caused a massacre. "I mean, why cant we deal with it as it comes up. I want to give us a try. Even if that just means being friends with you. I can feel a connection Bella, don't try to say you can't." Through out their whole conversation, Chief Swan and I found ourselves whipping our heads between the two. Bella huffed loudly and stormed off, disappearing through the back door, jumping into the blackness leaving us staring after her. Emmett broke the stare after her first, standing up and thanking me for picking him up before leaving the house himself, getting himself into the cruiser to wait for his father.
"What did we just witness?"
"Sir, I couldn't tell you if I tried. I'll keep an eye on her, but I mean it when I say we are no more dangerous than Jacob and his friends. And I know that it isn't very comforting to hear that, however, she loves him. And Vampires love a whole lot different from humans and she wouldn't be able to hurt him if she tried." I left it at that, watching the older man nod before watching him walk off, leaving me alone in a house and utterly confused.
TWO MONTHS LATER
EmPOV
The past couple months went by in a blur. I started training for the football team after school which had helped occupy my mind quite a bit. We had played our first game last week and managed to bring us home a win. I admit to scanning the crowd as it was announced that we won, but instead I found myself staring at Edward who locked eyes with me long enough to shake his head, giving me the confirmation I was already expecting. Bella and I hadn't talked unless absolutely necessary, which you would think would be often as lab partners but her charming ways had gotten us out of a lot of partner work. After the way we both stormed apart the last time we talked, I truly wasn't expecting her to show up at school the day, but she did. Looking down right mouthwatering every day since. She still sat at our table, for Edwards sake, and was kind to everyone including me. But you could tell it was forced. Since we weren't talking, I had managed to pick up on a few ticks that gave away to what Bella was thinking, since I spent most of my time watching her.
Things weren't looking like they were going to change at all until the first snow fall of the year. The team and I were stoked about the powder that had collected over the school day, enough that the small mountains had started forming along the fences and such. Lunch time rolled around and we found everyone outside, snowball fights already in action and kids pushing each other into the mounds of snow. Bella had excused herself from the group minutes prior to do who knows what. Jasper was wrapped around Alice, keeping her warms in ways an older brother didn't need to see. Rose stood next to me, eyes closed staring at the sky, the snow falling and landing on her porcelain skin. Edward was there as well, making small talk as I took in the white wonderland that had formed so quickly. It had been a while since I had been in snow, and the little kid in me was bubbling to go do something stupid. I managed to contain myself until right before the end of school let out. The teachers had let us all out early, our minds not willing to focus on the curriculum before us. I found us in the same group as earlier, minus the Cullens' who had left during their study block. Jasper told me about a spot in the woods that had a decent sized hill we could board down. Having not gone snowboarding in a few years, I eagerly accepted, sending Alice off with Rosalie and hopping in the jeep, heading to the spot Jasper had mentioned.
We had been there for about an hour, getting some really good runs in before the darkness came tumbling through. Jasper had gone down the hill first, drifting to a stop and unbuckling his board while I struggled with my one glove. He yelled he was heading to the jeep to check his phone he had left in there, I yelled back to let him know I'd join him in a minute. I was still focusing on my glove as I hopped to get in position to go down the hill. Halfway down the hill the board hit something sticking out of the snow, sending my tumbling straight towards a tree. I closed my eyes waiting for the force I knew was about to hit me, but it never came. I opened my eyes to see the top of Bellas head, her arms wrapped around me as if she was just giving me a hug. However, from the slight ache coming from my ribs, I knew she used some of her strength to stop me in my fall. She made she I was able to stand before she stepped back, looking over at the path to the jeep.
"Are you okay?" Her soft voice asked, making eye contact with me for the first time in what felt like forever. I managed a nod, before unclipping the board so I could stand easier. "Good, that's…. Good." She moved to walk away, back from where ever she came from.
"Bella, wait," She paused but didn't turn around, her back still to me. "You didn't leave, which I thought was a good thing. Until you decided ignoring me was the game plan. And I know I went along with it but I miss you. And I know I hadn't known you for long before everything was out in the open, but I would like to think we were friends before the big reveal. And I want that back. I want my friend to support me at my football games, to sit with me and actually hold a conversation with me at lunch. Before you go into the spiel about how you're dangerous, at least stop and remind yourself that you stayed. Which to me means one thing,"
"And that is?" She looked over her shoulder, her topaz eyes meeting mine.
"You care a lot more than you lead on, and it must be hurting you to ignore me the way you are." I left before she could say anything else, however I felt like I could feel her eyes on me the whole drive back to Jaspers and then to my house. And as I exited the jeep for the night I looked out to the forest edge, locking eyes with someone I couldn't see but could emotionally feel, and I knew something shifted.
