Your Law Degree is Showing

"I wanted that Job!" Hermione slammed her hand onto the table. Her anger and disappointment rolled off her like waves. "I know everything about it! I know how to write up the documents. I know how to work with the team leaders. Haven't I been doing most of Lindin's job for him? Haven't I. Don't I deserve to be Department head?" She glared at Ron. "But noooo. I'm not qualified. "I bet you had something to say about it too." She felt stupid as soon as she said it. But pride made her say it. Besides, Ron was safe, she could argue with him when there was no one else.

"What do you mean, I had something to do with it?" Ron's voice rose louder with each word. And he meant it. "What did I do to influence your interview?"

"Frankly, nothing, but do you have proof?"

"Proof of what?"

"Proof you didn't tell him to not hire me?" She knew her argument was garbage. She knew Ron would never do this. But her mind was angry and not thinking right.

"Seriously? Why would I do that? I'm proud of what you do. I know what you are capable of doing. Besides, what can a lowly shop keeper do to sabotage your job interview?" Ron's voice tampered down, not wanting to wake their daughter.

"First, I saw you leave Kingsley's office just before I had my interview. Second, you didn't want me to have this job anyways. Third, …." Tears were refusing to stay put.

"What third?"

"Well, I can't think of a third." She took a deep breath. "But you know what I mean."

"First, I did want you to get the job. And second, your law degree is showing." Ron's voice softened. His scowl turned into a lopsided grin.

"Ronald, I don't have a law degree." Hermione tried to stay angry but could never fight against the grin. She sniffed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.

"You don't have a law degree YET." He replied.

"What do you mean yet?" She felt confused. The law was not something she studied for and he well knew that.

"I went in to Kingsley, to try to convince him how perfect you would be for the promotion. He told me that you needed some law experience first. So I left." Ron turned to the sideboard and picked up a leaflet. "I then went down to the law department and they gave me this.

She read the title.

How to Earn Your Degree in Law, in Your Own Time.

Ron smiled. "If you want to be that high in the Ministry, they want you to know law. It's a two-year program, but knowing Hermione Granger-Weasley, you can get it in one."
