The sunlight shone softly that day. Softer than one would typically expect for a mid-autumn afternoon.
Kyle sighed.
A gentle breeze made the grass rustle. Classmates laughed and made noise in the distance.
He snuck a quick side glance.
Kyle looked again for a moment, olive eyes studying the sleeping form of Cartman. The one who decided on staying up until about 5 AM the night before to play some new, over-priced videogame he waited seemingly forever for, and thus unwillingly passed out during the two elementary student's lunch break.
He looked almost peaceful.
Another sigh, this time much softer.
Kyle looked back to his side again, focusing, focusing, fixating on all the small things.
Do not think about how soft he looks right now. Do not think about how gentle he is in your dreams, his docile kindness when the door is closed and no one is there to watch you. Do not think about how you'll probably have to carry him inside, or the stares you'll get when you inevitably explain that, "No, he's not dead, just tired", and "No, I do not love him, I only look after him because no one else will". Nobody ever knows what it's like, nobody ever understands.
For your own sake, do not think about it at all.
...
'He's cute when he's sleeping.'
The bell rang. Cartman sprung up, as if his 11-minute rest filled him with a new life altogether.
"Was I asleep? I was? Well, what were you watching me for, then? Ha-ha. I bet you were probably just trying to pull one of your sneaky jew tricks on me so you could steal my money!"
The wind changed direction. Leaves fell from a tree, falling all the way down to the ground below.
Kyle's look of contemplation and calm turned to one of frustration and concern.
"First of all, I was watching you because I'm pretty sure those guys over there were getting ready to throw a dodge ball at your head while you were out cold. I'm just trying to help. But you can thank me later though, I guess."
Making their way to their afternoon classes, they bickered all the way to the entrance of the school.
...After all, only love can break your heart.
