He should not have buried it in the woods. Honestly, his first head wanted to bury the bone on the grounds near the entrance, but Fluffy didn't listen to himself.

Fluffy growled in frustration, digging vigorously in various spots around the Forbidden Forest. The only thing that kept him going was the need to have his new chew bone.

He found it after his release from inside the castle. None of his minds understood why he was being taken away from the castle, but he trusted his master, Hagrid, so he didn't protest. Plus, Fluffy heard about their new location being in the Forbidden Forest, which sounded more pleasant than the castle; there'd be more creatures out there to show who was Top Dog.

When they went through the grounds, that's when he saw it: the carcass of one of those hippogriff creatures. One of its rib cage bones was large enough for him to play with, and Fluffy had to have it.

He wasted no time getting away from his master long enough to rip the rib cage bone away from the rest of the carcass. His other heads on either side of him tried to fight him for it but being in the middle had its benefits.

Which didn't help when it came to finding a place to put it. He fought with himself for the longest time, not even noticing that his master was trying to guide him back in the direction of the Forbidden Forest; Hagrid nearly lost his own head trying to get in the middle of the argument between the three heads.

He, the middle head, had won the other two over for the burial site of his new toy, so Fluffy allowed his master to guide them back on their journey to the Forbidden Forest. Once they finally crossed the barrier between the Hogwarts grounds and the Forbidden Forest, Fluffy felt something other than his normal aggression. He felt like he was somewhere he belonged, with many trees to mark his territory.

First things first, he had to put his bone in a safe spot within the forest; and he did, burying the bone for later chewing sessions.

Except now he couldn't remember where the safe spot was anymore. After another fruitless dig in the area, Fluffy ripped one of the trees from its roots and threw it across the forest, causing enough damage to the other trees. It should have felt satisfying to cause some destruction to the forest after it did him no good in his search, but it didn't.

Fluffy simply laid down and whimpered, burying his heads in his paws. He just wanted to find his chew bone.
