Chapter Sixteen: Summons (Omake)

A/N: For anyone who doesn't know, Omake means a bonus, so this is like a little epilogue of sorts for the arc. ;)

When Kaito arrived back at his home, he wasn't surprised to see Aoko leaning against his front door, her arms crossed, one foot tapping, and an angry scowl on her face.

Kaito sighed. 'Here we go….'

As soon as he drove his bike into his drive-way Aoko marched toward him. "Jerkaito! You were supposed to take me to see a movie half an hour ago! I bet it's already started by now! Where were you?!" She placed her hands on her hips and leaned in, waiting for his answer. She paused. "And what are you wearing? You're dressed like a criminal…. Don't tell me you were sneaking around the school setting up pranks again!"

Kaito closed his eyes and didn't face her, ignoring her. "None of your business," he snorted out. 'And now I'm gonna have to stay up late tonight setting traps in the school. Great,' he thought sarcastically.

Aoko fumed. "Augh, I can't believe you!" She stormed over to her house and went inside, slamming her front door shut.

Kaito frowned and sighed, leaning forward onto his handlebars, deflated. He'd actually been looking forward to hanging out with his best friend today, lately his life as KID was always getting in the way, and he was actually pretty disappointed that Aoko probably wouldn't talk to him again for a couple of days.

To his surprise, Aoko came storming back out of her house a minute later, this time with her helmet in tow. She'd gotten herself one a while back when Kaito told her he'd take her places when she had one. "We're taking your bike right? If we hurry we can make the next showing, but go change first, I won't be seen riding around with someone who looks like a criminal! And where's your helmet?! How dare you ride without it on, if you ever do that again I'll be the one to knock your head off myself!" She raged.

Kaito smiled. "Hai, hai." 'I was just too distracted to remember to put it back on before,' he thought, but he knew he really should always wear it. He stood and lifted the seat, pulling his helmet from the inner compartment hidden there, discreetly hiding his remaining glove and reinstalling his license plate as he did. He took off his cap and sunglasses and tucked them away as well.

Instead of going inside to change he pulled his overcoat off and turned it inside-out, revealing the other side to be a pastel shade of mid-range blue, something much less ominous than the black of before. He slipped on the now blue garment and hopped back on the bike. Aoko hmphed, but got onto the back of the bike regardless, indicating that the wardrobe change was acceptable. She put on her helmet and wrapped har arms around Kaito from behind. When he grabbed the handlebars and began to back them out onto the street, she noticed the bandage on his hand.

"Hey, what happened?" She asked, reaching one arm forward to tap the wrappings before setting it back into its holding position.

Kaito hummed. "Oh, that's just a slight injury from when I was setting up, nothing to worry about."

"So you were setting up pranks for school tomorrow!" Aoko accused. Kaito laughed and otherwise ignored her, taking off down the street at a steady pace with Aoko holding firmly from behind him.

….

That night, just before sundown, Dopey entered the Kuroba household via Kaito's open bedroom window. When Kaito returned from dinner at the Namakori's, he noticed a small plastic tube on his desk, a bit larger and thicker around than a pen but lighter in weight.

"Did they send you with something?" He asked Dopey. The dove was sleeping in his usual favorite spot on Kaito's bedside table. He lifted his head to look at his master, but didn't roll off his back, soon going back to sleep.

Kaito chuckled and opened the end of the tube, pulling out the rolled paper that was inside. It was a thank-you card from the Detective Boys, featuring the signatures of all of them and multiple crayon drawings. He was pretty sure one of the drawings was depicting him as Kamen Yaiba's sidekick, which was both annoying and amusing; the world-renown thief truly didn't know if he should be flattered or insulted. He noted with a chuckle that Conan and Ai both had signed their names in perfect print with an actual pen. Conan left no additional comment, but Ai's had the small written line of "Thanks, Jihibukaitou-san*."

Kaito smirked and headed down to his KID lair (since he couldn't very well leave incriminating evidence like this laying around his house). He pinned it up on one of his many boards alongside several newspaper clippings, schematics, and heist notes. He gathered some materials and put back on his black overcoat. 'Now to go secure my alibi.'

The next day Ekoda High School was ransacked with numerous pranks and traps, featuring a number of colors and a couple of rather nice spontaneous murals. Still illegal graffiti technically, but since one was of the school's mascot and motto, and the others were all harmless nature scenes or other subjects of the like, the principal let the magician off with a warning and decided to keep the paintings up to improve the school's aesthetic value.

Hidden in one of the paintings was what some of the students would later swear looked like a Kamen Yaiba doodle.

A/N: And that's the conclusion of this arc in the story. Next chapter we're back to other various antics and, who knows, maaaybe sometime soon we'll introduce some new fluffy characters hmm? (After all, Dopey is not the only dove my real-life Kaito and I own.)

*Jihibukaitou-san: This is actually a play on words in Japanese. Jihibukai (慈悲深い) means benevolent or charitable, and Kaitou (怪盗) means phantom thief (which we see often in KID's notes), so overlapping the two "kai"s without using one kanji or the other is a pun which combines the words to mean "Mr. Benevolent Phantom Thief". This is similar to how Aoko sometimes calls Kaito "BaKaito", mixing the "ka" from "baka" (idiot) and the start of his name into one word.

And with the completion of that Japanese lesson, I hope you enjoyed the arc! Reviews are much appreciated if you have the time, I love hearing from all my lovely readers~! ^^
