The Rhodes Chronicles
Chapter Two –
Connor had managed the catch the train just in time, the next thing he knew there a large grinding noise and he was falling on to the floor. His instincts kicked in and he quickly moved through the train cars to the front, triaging as he went along. When he saw the engine of the train of on the road below the tracks, he knew he had to somehow get down there and check on the driver.
He opened the door nearest to him and look up and down the thin walkway next to the train and towards the fixed emergency ladder that led down to street level. Once he worked out how to get to the ladder, he started walking towards it, within a few minutes he was climbing though the driver's window to assess him.
The driver was in bad shape, Connor could see he had lost a lot of blood already, he checked his pulse and he still had one, however Connor could tell it was getting weaker. There was no room for him to help the driver now, he would have wait for fire crew to help cut him out. Lucky Connor could hear they weren't that far away, he climbed out of the cab and once his feet were on the road again, he turned around the paramedics that were pulling up.
He met them and explained the situation to the fire crew who had accompany the ambulance crew. The fire crew went immediately straight to cutting the cab in the train up to make it easier for the paramedics and Connor to access the driver. It appeared like hours that Connor was waiting before he was able to assess the driver fully and that he was okay to be pulled out of the cab on the side of street onto a grungy.
"He needs fluids, could one of you start a line, while I assess his airway." He asked the paramedics and he made sure he did receive a positive response before he started to intubate the patient, next they had loaded him onto the ambulance while Connor assessed his injuries. On the journey to the hospital, the patient crashed, and that was his introduction to Chicago Med, doing CRP on the patient while being wheeled into the ER. Than he was affronted by an arrogant chief resident thinking he could take Connor's patient, to which he realised was quite arrogant of him as well; however, he was the trauma follow at Med, not that the chief resident knew that until he told him, and he was best person to help save the driver.
Once Connor was able to take a breather from the action, he checked over himself and looked down at his arm, as he noticed that was itching, he saw a 2-3-inch gash on his arm. He touched around the wound and realised it will require stitches. He looked up and made his way to the main triage desk and approached the knowledgeable looking black nurse.
"Hi, I'm Connor. Could you possibly point in the direction of a suture kit?"
"Of course, I can, I'm Maggie, head nurse, in the ER. Can get a junior nurse to help you with your arm." She offered and Connor smiled in return.
"That's ok, the angle of the cut will make it okay for me suture myself. Plus, your nurses are still a bit busy. If I need any help I will holla."
"Of course, let's get you that kit doctor...?" Maggie questioned while walking with Connor though the ER to the supply room.
"Rhodes, Connor Rhodes." He winced that sounded too much like James Bond. It appeared Maggie had to agree with the look she is giving him.
"Please whenever you meet my wife, don't mentioned that was how I introduced myself, she would never let the matter go, she would have a field day with that information."
Maggie immediately look down to Connor's left hand and noticed he wasn't wearing a ring, she thought he meant theoretical wife in the future and replied "all I can do is try to remember not to say anything!"
"Okay...good enough I suppose..." looking down at the suture kit in his hands, he raised it slightly in his hands and uttered "...thanks."
"You're Welcome." Maggie answered smiling gently at him.
Maggie watched Dr Connor Rhodes walk to one of free curtain areas as she made her way back to the bullpen of the ER and saw him strip off his shirt for better access to his arm. "Damn Hot..." she uttered under her breathe "...that boy is damn hot, if only I was 10 years younger..."
"Amen to that" many random nurses avowed as she went pass who were all also gazing at Connor. Looking around the bullpen she noticed most of the female population were focused on Connor, realising what was going on she reordered herself and asserted loudly to the gathering hens "back to work people."
Meanwhile, Connor was thinking how to explain the situation to Sarah, because there were no way he could get away not telling her, after all once she finishes her placement with Doctors without Borders, she was coming to join him as a surgeon at Chicago Med. He would just have to tell the truth, it's not like it was his fault, or knew the train was going to derail. Going into work via train was only temporary until Sarah arrived and the decided on what car they were going to purchase. Sarah may demand Connor no longer take the train, if this is the case, he would just have to pick the car he like. No! he realised, even in the unlikely hood she would demand he no longer take the train, she would still have the last approval of any care they buy, even if it were via face time.
"Morning Dr Rhodes, I'm Sharon Goodwin, bit a dramatic entrance, should we expect the same from Sarah." Sharon jested to Connor, which caused Connor to chuckle.
"I hope not…. even though she is pretty competitive."
"Yes, you both came across pretty competitive, but what surgeon isn't." She uttered back.
"However, you are okay?" she asked while pointing at the arm in was suturing. "Do you need any help with that?"
"Yes, I'm okay, I hardly felt it happen, so I don't know how I did. I'm nearly finished, so I don't need any help, but thanks for the offer." He gratefully replied, "Actually…." He quickly muttered, as she was turning away from him, she turn back to him and carried out talking "you could arrange for someone to tell me where to find some scrubs and the doctors lounge, so I can freshen up."
She gently smiled and reaffirmed "Of course! Welcome to Chicago Med Dr Rhodes."
"Thanks!"
