A/N The prompts for CoAi week in June have been posted! Check out their tumblr here: coai-week . tumblr . com! Here's a short drabble because I'm hyped up for it! XD
And thank you, sherry from the (always so welcoming!) Discord server, for the title, Donuts! XD
I'll also be rewriting One Starry Night for CoAi week (combining it with a short sequel!) since I do see that it can be confusing XD Watch out for that, and I hope you, readers, can participate too! \:D/
In an alternate universe, there is no poison, no alcohol-named villains and not-really-villains. No heartache, figuratively and literally. No shivers, no hiding from black cars, no hand-holding in the bus–okay, maybe holding hands isn't so bad.
In an alternate universe, there is no need for secrets, for disguise. Caps are worn for fashion and for fashion's sake only… or when it rains and he doesn't want her hair wet. The gadgets he's given are not worn out of necessity. He'd use them because he likes keeping the professor happy. And it doesn't hurt that she's there when he drops by.
In an alternate universe, "would she still be there?" is not a question that exists. Trust. He's sure that in every universe that exists, she'll be there. Maybe there's one Haibara Ai out there that won't be so snarky–but he supposes that he, the Kudo Shinichi of this universe, wouldn't prefer her, the Haibara Ai of this universe, any other way.
In an alternate universe, the worst that two genius teens–one detective, one chemist–would fight over, is who gets the last donut. He knows she doesn't even like this flavor. He knows that she knows he knows. He even knows she knows he knows she's just doing it to rile him up. She succeeds.
Her little smile as she bites into a donut she doesn't even want annoys him. But he's certain that in an alternate universe and in this one, he'd do everything to protect it.
