I don't know how to continue this story.

Sam's P.O.V.

I woke up and looked at where Abby was sleeping, confused when I saw that Josh was there too. His arms were wrapped around her. I frowned and cocked my head. Why was he allowed in the bed, but not me?

Slowly, they both woke up. "Good morning!" Abby whispered cheerily to Josh. She tilted her head up to him, expecting a kiss, but he pulled away from her. "I shouldn't be here," he said. He leaped out of the bed and backed away from her. "Why am I here?" he murmured.

"What? Josh no, come back," Abby said, sitting up straight. "I'll see you at breakfast," he growled at her.

"No you are not walking away from me," Abby said, scrambling out of her bed and blocking his path. "Get out of the way, Abby," he threatened quietly. He couldn't meet her gaze. Her eyes softened. "Josh, please look at me," she whispered.

He glanced down and saw that she had begun crying. I barked. Why was he hurting Abby? He looked away from her and stepped around her. She grabbed his hand. "What are you so afraid of?"

He squeezed his eyes shut. "I can't lose anybody else," he said quietly. This time, Abby let him step around her, and he left her standing in the doorway. I went to chase him back to Abby, to make him apologize, but Abby held up a hand, signalling for me to stay where I was.

Breakfast was awkward. Abby and Josh couldn't even make eye contact, and Laura was there, which made them both blush with embarrassment.

"Abby," she began, "care to tell me why I saw Josh in your bed last night?" Abby averted her gaze and colour stained her cheeks. Josh choked a little on his eggs. Neither of them responded. "I'll let it slide, but only because it happened yesterday."

Abby nodded slowly and went to pack her bag for the day. Josh finished his breakfast, thanked Laura and headed out the door. Abby followed him a few minutes later, after saying goodbye to her mother and me.

When they came home at the end of the day, they were yelling at each other. "You know, I finally figured it out," Abby shouted. "I figured out why you wouldn't kiss me this morning, why you wouldn't even look at me all damn day."

Josh glared at her. "It's because you don't care about me. You never have," she continued.

Josh sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "How many times do I have to explain this to you? It's because I care about you too much."

"Oh, because that's totally possible!" Abby bit back sarcastically.

"Oh my god!" He threw his arms into the air exasperatedly.

"How about you actually explain it now? Hm?"

"Sit down," he said quietly. She hesitated. "Sit," he ordered. She took a spot on the couch and I ran to jump up in her lap. Josh sat across from her and crossed his arms.

"I didn't want to tell you this now, because yesterday was… yesterday," Josh began quietly. "But every single person I have ever loved is now dead." He began blinking very fast, to rid the tears from his eyes.

Something must be very wrong if Josh was crying. He never cried.

Abby reached across to put her hand on his, but pulled back at the last second and stuffed it into her pocket. "I'm so sorry," she whispered.

"I just don't want that to happen to you," Josh said weakly. He slowly raised his eyes to hers. Abby leaned forward and kissed him, but he didn't kiss her back. He didn't push her away, either.

"I'm sorry, Abby," he said. He got up to leave. "Wait," she said. "How do you know that I won't be able to fend for myself against… whatever is happening with you?"

Josh laughed humourlessly. "I can't risk it."

"But what if-"

"I can't." Josh tried to walk away, but Abby grabbed his forearm. "Please just let me ask this one last question." Josh nodded.

"What happened to your family?"

Josh sat back down. He seemed very sad. "My mother left when I was born, so it was just my father and me. My dad… he was-" He sighed, then started over. "One day, he was driving my dog to the vet. He hadn't been eating much for the past few days and I was worried about him. That's when the car accident happened." Josh looked down.

"It was a hit-and-run, so no one ever found out who had killed my dad and my dog. Then I went to live with my uncle, the police officer, and his wife Sharon. She died from food poisoning after she went to Cuba.

"Then I met my first girlfriend. She was… perfect. I cared for her a lot. She killed herself when she jumped off of her apartment building. I still think she was pushed."

"So you've had a string of bad luck; so what? Maybe I'll be different," Abby said. Josh scoffed and shook his head. "There's no escaping… whatever's happening to me. Listen, Abby, I really like you. Like I really like you. I can't take another death. I'm sorry Abby, I just can't."

Abby smiled sadly. "If you're too scared to love somebody, why live at all?"

She starting walking away from him, and I followed her. She looked over her shoulder and said, "Come talk to me if you ever change your mind." She left the room.

I felt bad for Josh; he didn't deserve the hand life had dealt him.
