"So … what we are doing here?" asked Rose Potter.
It had begun as a normal day. 6th year was pretty average after her fight with Tamara Riddle in the Ministry Atrium. Wake up, shower, get dressed, pester Daphne, attend class, avoid Dumbledore. Then her unhinged counterpart decided to kidnap her without warning from afternoon Transfiguration class. A portal of made of fire and brimstone appeared in the back of the class with her classmates sprinting to the front of the room instantly. McGonagall had turned into her cat form and started hissing maniacally at the hellfire. Rose was promptly yanked back into the portal, it disappearing with a pop. God that's going to be annoying to explain Rose thought morosely.
"Mmm?" replied the aforementioned unhinged counterpart. His eyes were focused on the wizard in the middle of the atrium that was orating to the crowd.
"I said what are we doing here!" replied Rose with a huff.
"Well we are watching a speech obviously. Its pretty clear Rose. We travelled here and started watching the speech. So our purpose is to watch the speech. Duh! Now shush this guys beginning to speak".
Rose's eye was beginning to twitch as she glared at her counterpart / dimensional sibling / overpowered absent minded jerk.
"My brothers. My sisters. My friends. The great gift of your applause is not for me. No! It is for yourselves. You came here today because of a craving…"
After listening for a moment to the blonde haired wizard Rose formulated a new planned of attack.
"Okay, let me rephrase. Why are we here?"
"Because this is important. See him on the stage. That's Gellert Grindelwald. You should listen. Its important you know your history. It makes single stream time travel much easier to understand".
"The Muggle. The No-Maj. The Can't-Spells. I do not hate them; I do not. For I do not fight out of hatred. I believe that the Muggles are…"
Rose could see his point. Grindelwald certainly had a presence about him that Tamara certainly didn't. He wasn't spooky like Tamara but engaging. This was interesting. The magi around them were listening, intensely enraptured in the rhetoric.
"Okay then…..so why is Daphne here?" said Rose, jumping to the next thought.
"Well I thought you wouldn't mind having a friend along for trip. You asked me to meet her since I couldn't remember her from Hogwarts at all so I-No Daphne, you cant join the magi supremacy movement, sit back down!"
Said witch was looking enraptured towards Grindelwald on stage had begun to edge forward further into the crowd. Harry guided her back to the stone bench before settling again.
"Anyway like I was saying….what was I saying again?" Harry looked confused for a moment before turning to Rose.
"…..blooms only in rare souls. It is granted to those who live for higher things…."
"Okay I get why I am here. I get why Daphne is here, but why is the baby here? Where in the world did you get a baby? You didn't kidnap it did you?"
Said baby was sitting in an out of place looking conjured paisley car seat sleeping.
"Where in the multiverse you mean? And wait no I didn't kidnap it! Well not exactly….. I don't think its kidnapping?"
"Harry. I need you to do me a favour".
"Jesus Tele! Can you not just …. You know appear out of nowhere when I am trying to get ready?" Harry had been settled quite happily in his room at the mansion, scanning his closet for something 1920s looking for his bonding time with his female counterpart. Esdeath was in the library browsing books for multiverses she wanted to visit. Anything with a strong challenger was free game at this point and Harry had not idea what she would choose. Probably not the battle for Helms Deep again. It was their 5th official date and she wanted to go somewhere special. Harry was still completely smitten with the blue haired General and was happy to follow along doing whatever at this point.
"Look, it will only take 5 minutes. In and out. Do this for me please!" Did Teleute really have to pout like that. Every damn time..
"I am due in Roses multiverse in like 5 minutes Tele"
"Harry, there is no being late with multiverse travel. Don't be dumb. Now listen"
With a sigh Harry put down the vest he had found and focused on his ancestor.
"Look. I need you to go to a verse and grab a newborn for me. His mother is an undead psychic who is about to pass onto my realm after giving birth. You need to go and get her kid. Got it?"
"Okay…..kidnapping aside, why is it so important we get the kid. What are we going to do with a newborn?"
"Take him to an equivalent verse and leave him with the undead counterpart of the psychic who isn't about to pass into my verse and doesn't have a baby. See easy? Now off with you!" Teleute proceeded to make shooing motions with her hands.
Harry begun to move towards a space her could draw up a portal but suddenly stopped. Turning he asked "What happens if the baby stays in that verse?"
"He gets eaten by his older undead brother that has a bullet wound in his head. Bad stuff happens and that verse implodes. It's a very unstable stream"
"….sure that makes sense. Wait! Why can't you go get the baby? You are not doing anything important right now!"
Teleute went quiet and blushed before beginning to shove Harry towards a prepared portal that was not embedded into the wall a second ago.
"Nuh uh. Why not Teleute?" asked Harry as he transfigured his legs into stone and melded them into the floor of the room.
"I can't go to that stream okay!" Teleute was shouting. When she shouted that meant something was embarrassing. Now Harry had to know.
"Why?"
With a look down at the floor Teleute responded "There was a ladder in that verse okay?"
"A ladder?" Now this was perplexing.
"Yes! A spooky ladder. In some creepy water treatment plant. I was climbing down it and the undead mother in little spooky ghost girl form jump scarred me and I screamed. I am not going to back there okay! Now go!"
Harry looked bemused for a moment before responding in a slow tone "Tele… you do realise that you are the personification of Death right?"
Teleute glared.
"And that Rose is why we have a baby with us." A charming grin was pointed in her direction. A further twitch was developing in her eyelid.
"Okay I understand why I am here. I understand why Daphne is here. I understand why the baby is here. But why is a 12 year old sleeping Goyle here?"
"That's an easy one. See miss blonde new yorker in the front rows? Next to the moustache man with the burgundy coat? Natural legilimens. She can sense us under the notice me not spells."
"Take this young warrior back to her family. Disapparate. Leave. Go forth from this place and spread the word: it is not we..."
"So what's that got to do with Goyle?"
Harry looked thoughtful for a second before answering.
"Ever wondered why outside of class Snape seems to always catch you up to no good and know you were responsible, but during potions class you never get caught?"
"Errm no?"
"Well you know now. The Goyle family is weird. They work as a natural occlumency barrier for everyone in their vicinity. No idea why, but I think that's why they are not the sharpest bunch around. I didn't have time to teach you or little miss Greater Good Follower occlumency so I did the Goyle work around. Savvy?"
Daphne did look way to engaged in Grindelwald's actions.
"And why is he asleep?"
"One of our counterparts drugged him with a cupcake. I will return him to the broom closet after our playdate. And remember if you need to tell a lie to a mind reader grab a Goyle"
"….join me in this circle. Pledge to me your eternal allegiance, or die…."
Blue flames were encircling the platform. The crowd had left the auditorium and the Aurors were circling.
Rose thought for a moment before looking past Harry and the sleeping Goyle.
"Why is Teleute here?"
Teleute looked up from the car seat which she had been cooing at and grinned manically.
"A Lestrange is about to pass on. Typically one of us is around to see a Lestrange pass. Something about their magic makes their souls…..sticky and they usually need a poke to move on. When I am too lazy to go to that verse a new Lestrange ghost appears 50% of them time. Blasted necromancers"
Rose hummed for a moment and glanced down at the action blankly. A thought had occurred!
"Wait, doesn't this death occur in a lot of multiverses? Doesn't that mean you are reaping the same soul each time?"
Harry piped up with a grin. "Best not to think about souls like that Rose, you will end up like me." The grin extended further and looked a little unhinged. Goyle twitched in his sleep. Rose rolled her eyes.
"But that still means you are going to the same moments again to reap souls, what's the deal with that?"
Teleute responded slowly as Grindelwald and Lestrange begun duelling. Harry looked at the action with an intense eye.
"Think of each timeline as a train travelling down a line. Trains stop all stations but arrive at those stations different times. Get it? Sometimes the trains are express and skip a station, others stop in a pattern. Different lines for different timestreams. Everything that can happen will happen somewhere, sometime. In the end it doesn't really matter and probably is not worth thinking about. Harry and I don't really exist within time you know?"
Rose grimaced at the thought.
"Doesn't that seem a little inefficient?"
"No one said the multiverse had to make sense Rose. You get used to it."
With a blink of an eye Rose and Daphne were back at the gates of Hogwarts. Night had fallen which perplexed Rose after her conversation about time with Teleute. Harry looked pleased at the lit up castle looming in the distance.
"Alright counterpart and company. Did you enjoy your history lesson?"
"It was entertaining. Seeming Flamel was cool. I was expecting someone younger"
Harry looked at her weirdly.
"He wears a glamour to mess with people. Guy usually doesn't look a day over 30"
"Oh"
Rose was engulfed in a hug, with Daphne being reluctantly dragged into the fray.
"Okay Rose, I will see you later! Bye Daphne!" A portal appeared behind them made of blue pulsating light.
"Wait, I never did ask. Why were you watching that fight? Why did you pick that moment to observe with us?"
A moment of awkward silence drifted through the trio.
"I just wanted to see how to turn my cursed fire blue. Couldn't work it out."
"That seems so….. frivolous? Why do you need blue fire?"
"Why not?"
With a leap backwards he was through the portal with it disappearing with a pop.
Rose turned back towards the castle and dragged Daphne towards the gate.
Daphne's eyes widened suddenly before she blurted out "Bet he deliberately dropped us off at night so the school would freak out some more."
Rose glared back at where the portal had been swearing she could hear laughter.
