LOVE
Selene found her daughter sitting at the top of the cliff, hugging her legs into a ball. She knew something was wrong.
"I looked for you everywhere." Said the Death Dealer.
"I needed to think."
Selene wanted to let her alone, she didn't know how to handle all these feelings, she wanted to be alone too, but the sadness she heard in Eve's voice was too blatant to ignore.
"Eve. Tell me what's wrong." She didn't intend for it to sound like an order, but that's exactly how it sounded.
She saw her daughter's shoulders tense.
"I'm fine." She said with, was that defiance she heard in that?
All Selene could see was Eve's back, but she knew there was nothing "fine". She didn't need to use their connection to know Eve was crying.
Selene sat beside Eve, looking ahead. She didn't know what to say, but now she needed to get to the bottom of this.
"I use that expression when I'm not fine." Eve wiped a tear on her sleeve. She covered a laugh/sob at Selene.
"Mom?"
"Yes?" Selene responded immediately congratulating herself for, this time, not hesitating or not thinking it was for her.
"Do you love me just because I'm my father's child?"
Selene almost broke her neck when she turned to look at Eve. What the hell kind of question was that? And what the hell kind of answer would she give? She took a moment with that one and looked inside of herself why did she love Eve. Then she really looked at Eve and smiled, a real smile.
"No. It is a big part of that. And at first it was because of that. But then I started to get to know you. When you were gone, I felt empty, I felt like I didn't have any purpose in life. I knew it was for the best that you were gone, but not knowing when I would get you back or if you would even want to come back was what hurt the most. You were the only thing that made me come back to the coven, the only thing that they could hang over my head. The main reason why I accepted coming back was knowing that you would be safe in here, you would be protected by the coven and with me, not somewhere around the world having to fend for yourself alone." Selene said feeling guilty. "I'm sorry if I never tell you I love you, or that I don't hug you enough." She said self-consciously "But that doesn't mean that I don't love you with all my life, Eve. I have given my life for you and I would give it again many times over because you're worth it."
She didn't know when, but Eve was suddenly in her arms, hugging her so tightly she almost couldn't breathe. But she didn't care. The feeling that simple act gave her was worth a life. She kissed the top of Eve's head and breathed her hair smiling and hugging her back. They stayed that way for a while and then Selene quipped.
"Let's go, you haven't fed all day and you get cranky when you're hungry."
"I do not!"
Selene just raised her eyebrows.
"Tell that to the pillars you threw David at the last time you skipped a meal."
"Is he ok?" Eve asked ashamed.
"He'll live." Selene said walking towards the Var Dohr and this time, Eve followed.
