Buzz sighed impatiently. As usual, Woody was taking his sweet time looking over the checker board, searching for every possible move. It didn't matter. Buzz was beating him by two kings.
His eyes wandered to center of the room, where the afternoon sunbeams were filtering in, making a golden square on the floor. Bullseye was lying in the middle it with Jessie beside him, using his saddle as a pillow, her hat flung off to the side, as they soaked up the warmth. Her eyes were squeezed together drowsily, just enough green peeping out, the various tints in the paint ignited as they caught the light.
"Have you ever noticed…" Buzz said slowly. "That when the sun hits Jessie's eyes just right, they look like an aurora borealis?"
Woody had finally started to reach for a red checker but he froze, his hand hovering just above the plastic disc. "I'm sorry, what?"
"An aurora borealis," Buzz repeated. "A collision of particles all bouncing and jumping off one another in high energy orbit to create a spectacular green light." He coughed. "Just when the sun hits them, I mean."
Woody stared at him bewildered. "I think you've been spending too much time in the sun."
Buzz frowned. "It was a simple observation."
Woody finally moved his checker. "That you think Jessie's eyes are spectacular?"
The Ranger looked down at the floor, avoiding his friend's face. "Well they are," he finally muttered.
"Y'all know I can hear every word yer sayin', right?"
Buzz turned the color of cranberries as his head snapped up. In the sunspot, Jessie had rolled over and was looking at them. "You two are as quiet as church mice wearing steel boots."
Getting to her feet, Jessie grabbed her hat and stretched. Bullseye jumped up and followed as she strolled over to the guys. As she passed by Buzz, she paused. "You can double jump and take his king."
"WHAT?"
With a smile, Jessie patted the still red Ranger on the shoulder and walked to the end of the bed. As she rounded the corner out of sight, she could hear Woody shouting, "I ONLY HAD ONE!"
Bullseye, faithful as always, sat down on his haunches beside her. Making sure they were out of sight of any other toy, Jessie wrapped her arms around the horse. Burying her face in his neck she let out a muffled squeal of joy.
