Low Key Valentine's Day
"Perfect." Jackie said to herself with a smile as she stuck a bite of a heart-shaped brownie into her mouth.
She set the brownies on the cooling rack.
Today was Valentine's Day, and Jackie's day at work had been hectic because of the Valentines party with her students but she had gone home right after her students had gone home instead of staying for an hour and a half like she normally had to do. Their principle didn't really mind if they left early once in a while, especially teachers like Jackie who got there early and often stayed well past when she was supposed to.
Nick's parents were in town and they were staying at one of the fancy hotels on the strip for Valentines Day but they had actually celebrated the holiday a day early so it wouldn't be so crowded around town and since they had already celebrated they offered to take the kids for Nick and Jackie for the night so the kids could go swimming in the hotel pool and Nick and Jackie could have the night to themselves.
Nick himself had to work a double and Jackie expected him home any minute. She hurriedly got the card she had gotten him as well as the new pair of sunglasses she had purchased him and set them on the table.
He'd ruined his old ones by accidently dropping and then stepping on them at work, Jackie had found that extremely funny, Nick hadn't however.
Jackie had just finished laying everything out when she heard the key rattle in the doorway.
"Hi." She said cheerfully.
"Hi." He responded as he walked over to her and slid his arm around her.
"How was your day?" She asked him.
"I hate people." Was his reply.
"Bad day?" She asked.
"Yeah, you could say that, I don't really want to talk about it."
She gave him a sympathetic look.
"What smells so good?" He asked as he wandered over to the brownies.
"These are cute, and delicious." He said as he picked one up and shoved a bite in his mouth.
"Hey, those are for later, they aren't even frosted yet." She told him as she swatted his arm.
He gave her a guilty smile as if he was one of the kids.
"Sorry." He said sheepishly.
She grabbed his hand and led him over to the table.
"New shades, thanks Jacks." He said as he put them on.
"Looks nice." She commented.
He went up and looked in the bathroom mirror.
"I like um." He declared as he came back downstairs.
"Thank you." He said as he leaned over and kissed her, his kiss, now tasting like chocolate thanks to the brownie.
"I'll be right back." He told her as he disappeared up the stairs.
He came back down carrying an envelope and a small box of chocolates.
"Happy Valentine's Day." He told her as he handed it to her.
"Thank you." She said as she began opening the envelope.
Inside there was a gift certificate to her favorite nail salon.
"Thanks Nicky, I've been wanting to get my nails done." She told him.
"I know, believe it or not, I do listen when you speak to me." He told her with a playful smile.
She laughed.
"Listen, I know it's Valentines Day but I've had a really long day, would it be alright if I just went and picked up some Chinese food and rented a movie? A quiet night in sounds really nice." He asked.
"Sounds great to me, besides we just went out for a nice dinner and that concert for my birthday."
"Alright, thank you, do you want your usual? I'll call in the order and then go get it." He said as he picked up the phone.
"The usual." She confirmed.
He nodded and then dialed the number.
While he was gone picking up their dinner and movie she frosted the brownies so they could have them for dessert.
When he got back they enjoyed their dinner, dessert, and then the comedy movie that he had rented on the way home from the Chinese restaurant.
It might not have been the most exciting Valentines Day but it was perfect none the less.
The End!
