Houseguest
"Hi." Nick said with a big smile as he walked through the door after work.
Jackie's mouth dropped open, Nick was holding a blue-eyed, dark red-haired baby boy, who Jackie guessed was about Nora's age.
"Honey, who is that?"
"His name is Joshua, and why do you look so shocked? I called and told you I was bringing a baby home."
"I know, but I thought it was a kitten, or puppy, I didn't think you meant human."
"Nope, he's definitely not a kitten or puppy, he's very much human." Nick told her with a smile as he sat down on the couch.
Jackie sat down next to him, waiting for an explanation.
"You see, his mom was a murder victim and we found his godmother, his mom's sister, his aunt, but she won't be able to get here until Monday, he would have had to go into foster care over the weekend until Monday so I offered to bring him home, we obviously have all the baby stuff we need to take care of him and he's adorable, actually he's only three weeks younger than Nora, and look at him, isn't he cute, look at the red floppy hair."
"He's completely adorable." Jackie said, adjusting to her surprise weekend house guest with ease.
She took the baby off of Nick's lap and the little one rewarded her with a happy grin.
Nick then started laughing.
"What?" Jackie asked.
"If you take him out to the grocery store and run into people you are acquainted with they are going to start wondering about you." He told her playfully.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, he's obviously not my biological child, so people with think what did Jackie do, maybe the sweet innocent first grade teacher isn't so innocent after all."
"Oh shut up." She said as she swatted his arm. He burst out laughing.
"Well my students already think I drink excessively, apparently, so that will just be one more thing."
"Why does your students think you drink, you don't really drink at all."
"The other day I tripped over a chair in my classroom, I caught myself before I fell so the only thing that I hurt was my pride, but still. Anyways, all my students come rushing over to me and ask if I was ok, except for Davis, he walks over to me and goes Stokes, do you drink? He then simply walks away. I love that child, he's a complete riot, and he was gone a couple of days last week because his family went on vacation and boy was it boring without him."
Nick was laughing so hard tears were streaming down his face.
"I think Davis is my favorite student that you've ever had, your Davis stories every night make my day."
"Yep, I will certainly miss him next year." Jackie agreed.
Just then all the kids come into the living room.
"Baby." They exclaimed as they rushed over to Joshua.
"Him come out." Hundley said happily as she rubbed Jackie's tummy.
"No sweetheart, he didn't come out of mommy's tummy, he's not my baby, he's going to stay with us over the weekend and then his auntie is coming to get him."
"Him go away?" Hundley asked.
"Yes kiddo."
"Baby No go away too?" Hundley asked sadly.
"No sweetheart, baby Nora isn't going away, she is staying with us." Jackie assured her quickly.
"Yay baby no no go away."
Jackie smiled at the little girl.
"You guys stay in here with daddy and play with baby Joshua, mommy's going to start dinner." Jackie said as she handed the baby back to Nick.
"Baby No seepin?"
"Yep, Nora is sleeping." Jackie told her before leaving the room to go start dinner.
It looked like it was going to be an interesting weekend.
