Ch.1: Signals Crossing
…
She lets her purse drop onto the kitchen island with a loud thud, the force in which she does so making Harvey turn around, face clouding with worry. He watches her for a moment, eyes unmistakably filling with tears as she sniffles softly, her hands playing with the hem of her white dress. He takes a tentative step toward her, forehead slightly creased.
"Hey, you okay?"
Donna snorts, crossing her arms as she finally looks up at him, "Am I okay?"
"I- you were quiet all the way home tonight, and you just-"
"I just what?" She presses, her face now crumpling and he feels a lump forming in his throat from the hurt he could see her in eyes.
"You're upset," he observes quietly, taking the few remaining steps until he was about a foot away from her.
Donna lets out a scoff, reaching up to angrily wipe away her tears, "Well, at least you've noticed something lately."
"Donna, what-"
"Did you really not get a single clue?" She hisses at him.
"I-"
She rakes a hand through her golden locks, a humorless laugh leaving her, "I must've given you a dozen or so clues these past couple of days, hoping you would get the damn hint."
"Donna, what are you talking about?" His eyes are wide as she studies her, genuine concern filling him to the brim as he watches the love of his life breaking before him.
"You know, I always knew you were never quite as- aware with things as I was, you do have a tendency to be pretty damn clueless at times, but," she laughs dryly, "I mean- I thought, 'maybe, if he at least got one hint' but you didn't get one damn signal!"
The high octave in her face makes him flinch just slightly, but instead of taking a step back, he inches closer to her, careful not to startle her in her current vulnerable state.
"Donna, talk to me, what's going on?" His gentle prod only makes her shake her head, shaking him off as well when he tries to take hold of her arms. The move makes his heart sink, but he tries to tamper the hurt down to focus on her current pain.
"No matter what was going on in our lives, where we stood, I always felt like you knew me, you saw me for who I was, for who I was to you," she pauses for a moment, hazel eyes boring into his own, watching him swallow back the hurt, "and yeah, you missed a lot of shit over the years, but ever since we got together you've been pretty adamant about how I acted around you, what I did, what I said, how I said it, but lately…. What is it, Harvey? Is the honeymoon period over? Are you really that oblivious?"
He watches her chest rising and falling with every quick breath she exhaled, her auburn hair now covering her eyes just slightly. "Donna-"
"I gave you the signal, Harvey. I gave you- at least a dozen or so, hoping at least one would get through that thick head of yours, and I know you've been busy and worrying about your precious case, but Jesus Christ, Harvey-" she takes another deep breath then, trying to steady her current hysteria.
She didn't mean to blow up at him, wasn't planning on lashing out the second they got home from work that night. But as soon as they walked in, her boyfriend barely saying a word to her as he immediately headed in the direction of their bedroom, she couldn't hold it in anymore. Images of the past week kept flooding through her mind- she had been giddy at first, excited to share the news with him, trying to find a special way of telling him. Then she had caught onto an idea, deciding to leave him little clues every now and then, from sending him pictures in messages, to leaving little post its around the apartment and even in his office at work. But her efforts had seemed futile, Harvey having not even bothered to ask her what was going on, and it had stung.
"I thought I could make it fun! I wracked my brain trying to find ways to tell you, and goddammit, Harvey, I was so excited- to tell you, to see your face…"
"Tell me what?" He asks her gently.
"Do you even care anymore?"
"Donna-"
"I'm pregnant!" She blurts out suddenly, "I've been trying to tell you for days, and I just kept waiting and hoping that maybe just maybe you would get the damn signal, but you didn't. You were too busy and too occupied on anything and everything that didn't involve me, and maybe you think it's ridiculous, or maybe you really didn't see this coming so you didn't even put it to the forefront of your mind because you're not ready to have kids, or you don't want kids and- what the hell are you smiling about?"
A frown settles on her face as confusion sets in, staring at his own soft expression. His mouth was parted in a slow growing smile, his eyes gleaming with something she would so dare as to call joy, and his eyebrows were raised in pleasant surprise.
"We're having a baby?"
His gentle voice shakes her out of her angry trance, the words he expelled laced with boyish wonder and disbelief all in once.
Donna clears her throat, blinking a few times to will the remaining tears in her eyes to cease, "Yeah, we are," she crosses her arms, eyes still slits are she glares at him.
Harvey takes a tentative step toward her, stopping when he's able to take hold of her arms, "Say it again."
She furrows her eyebrows, "What?"
"Tell me," he caresses the skin of her arms with his thumbs, "just- tell me again, please."
Donna heaves out a sigh, studying his face for any clear cut signs she must be missing, "I'm pregnant, Harvey."
She barely catches the overpowering grin that stretches across his face before he's cupping her face in his hands, bringing her toward him in a bruising kiss. She stays frozen in place for a moment, the move catching her by surprise. It's only when he begins to move his lips over hers does she relax in his arms, sighing into the kiss. Before she can let him continue, he's pulling back, his forehead automatically falling on hers as a shit-eating grin meets her eyes.
"God, I've been waiting for you to tell me," he breathes out against her.
Her hazel eyes widen, the smile that was starting to form dropping as his words hit her in full, "You knew?"
Harvey nods, the dimples on his cheeks prominently showing, "I mean, I had a feeling, a pretty good feeling, actually."
Donna shakes her head, her mouth agape, "How-"
"You've been acting pretty different, Donna," he brings up her hands to kiss them gently, his eyes never leaving hers, "It wasn't just the clues you sent me that tipped me off," when her head tilts in confusion, words still caught in her throat, Harvey moves to explain, "you haven't been drinking your morning coffee, nor your usual glass of red when we get home," he sends her a pointed look, "Plus, you've been- uh, kind of- well, moody, lately, and tired, more than- ever," he winces in advance then, hoping his words didn't just send him to the dog house. When she only purses her lips in response, he continues, "But, I think what really gave it away," he rubs her arms, his vice lowering an octave, "was how happy you've looked, how much you've been glowing lately."
"Glowing?" Donna snorts, the cliché making her voice find its way back.
Harvey grins, letting his cheeks grow wide before they slowly falter, "Until tonight," he whispers. He watches her face falling slightly, a sheepish expression on her face. "I'm sorry I didn't let you know sooner, I didn't mean to upset you, I never meant for you to get that upset. I was an idiot, I just- I don't know, maybe it's silly, but I really wanted to hear it from you."
Her heart warms at his words, her chest suddenly feeling tighter again and she wills the tears to stay at bay, "That's okay," she reassures him, voice more hoarse than she intended for it to come out, "I mean, you're a goddamn idiot, but… you really knew all this time?"
Her question makes his eyes crinkle with unbridled joy again, slightly amused at her disbelief, "I can't believe you didn't know I knew," he jokes.
Donna shakes her head, her lips curling as his arms wrap around her, "I was too busy being pissed off at you, mister," she mumbles against him, watching his eyes suddenly shining with unshed tears. "So, you're happy about this?"
Her questions comes out quiet, timid and hopeful all once. Harvey suddenly hates himself, the notion of having him wait for her to tell him seeming pretty idiotic now. He never wanted to put that much doubt in her, and while he knows some of her outburst came from her hormones being on the fritz, he still felt guilty for making her so upset.
"Yeah," he finally speaks, "I'm- I don't think I've ever been this happy."
She beams at him then, lips full and wide as she pulls his face down for another kiss, their teeth clashing in the process. Their arms wrap around in each other in reflex, the desire to be as close to each other as possible overcoming them both at once. When oxygen becomes a necessity, Harvey is pulling back, his own tears now clouding his vision.
"How far along are you? Do you know?"
Donna shakes her head, sniffling back her emotions, "Uh, not exactly no, but the doctor gave me an estimate of about four weeks. I have an appointment for an ultrasound next week."
Ultrasound.
The word alone makes his heart skip a full beat, his chest suddenly feeling too tight and the lump in his throat grows ten-fold.
"When? I'm gonna be there," he tells her definitively, "clear my schedule, cancel any appointments, I don't care, I'm going to be there. For every single one," he promises her.
Donna nods, a watery chuckle leaving her, "Consider it done."
Harvey's face lights up again, realization hitting him and he's pulling her in for another kiss, swaying her lightly on the spot. He parts from her a second later, excitement still buzzing through him, "So exactly how long were you going to keep the charades going, waiting for me to figure it out?"
Donna rolls her eyes, her lips twitching at his undeniable elation, "Well, if you must know- what the hell is that?" Harvey turns around to where she was pointing to, catching the sight of cardboard boxes that sat outside his office behind him. A sheepish smile covers him, and he turns to face his confused girlfriend again.
"I uh- I have something to show you," he doesn't wait for her to respond before he's leading her toward his home office, or what's left of it.
Donna hangs her mouth open when she peers inside, the small space dimly lit. Despite it being dark, she could still see the lack of shelving that housed some of the records Harvey kept at home, along with a couple of law books he liked to have around. His desk was missing as well, and in their places other pieces of furniture sat instead.
The redhead swivels around to her boyfriend then, eyes wide and voice coming out in a high squeal, "Two cribs, Harvey? Really?"
The man in questions shrugs, stepping off where he had been leaning against the doorframe, having enjoyed watching her reaction, "I couldn't decide."
"You- couldn't decide?" She lets a laugh escape her lips, her eyes darting back to where a mahogany crib sat, right next to what she guessed to be an off-white version of its twin, "Why the hell would you-?"
"I uh, I got a little excited when I figured it out," he sends her a nervous smile, finally stepping into her space.
Donna fights back the grin she was trying to hold back, the effort failing her when her lips curl against her own will, "When did you even have time to do this? This wasn't like this yesterday?" She searches his chocolate brown eyes through the dark, watching him fiddling with her hands he held in his.
"You remember this afternoon? When I told you I was going to meet with Matthews to see if he could cut a deal?" At her nod he continues, heaving out a small breath, "Well… I really came here, started packing everything up and waited for the delivery guys to come and deliver those two cribs. Which, by the way, not an easy task to build."
Her hazel eyes widen, "You assembled them? You do know you could've paid those guys do that for you, right?"
Harvey laughs at her perplexed expression, his hands moving up her arms, "Yeah, I did know that, but, I don't know, this is my kid and I wanted to do it myself," he shrugs.
Donna shakes her head, the fluttering in her stomach returning at his words. It was funny to think that just moments before she was hurting and confused, overturned by hormones as she spat angry words at the man who had built two cribs in his office-turned-almost nursery.
"You're something else, you know that?" She whispers in awe, cursing herself when her eyes start prickling with tears again.
"I just- I got so excited that I couldn't wait, and yeah, I realize you would've found this had you not-"
"Freaked out on you?"
Harvey smirks, "Practically bit my head off, yes," he kisses her forehead, "but I couldn't wait anymore, I guess the paternal instinct in me started taking over."
Donna chuckles, turning to face the two cribs that sat in the small room again. "I can't believe you knew," she playfully swats him on the arm, shaking her head again.
"Ouch, what the hell was that for?" Harvey laughs, rubbing the skin above his elbow.
"That was for throwing me off my game. Here I was thinking you were the clueless one, when I had no idea, you already knew," she emphasizes with a swift poke to his chest.
"Geez woman, pregnancy is making you mean," Harvey jokes, watching as she rolls her eyes in retaliation.
"I'd hit you again, but you did just build two cribs for our little Specter-to-be, so I'll spare you another bruise," she quirks an eyebrow at him.
"I should count my blessings, then," Harvey notes, leaning forward until he was at eye level with her stomach, "you hear that pumpkin? Mommy's teasing your daddy again."
Her breath catches at his words, lip caught between her teeth when he gently places his hands over her abdomen, leaning forward to place a kiss over the still flat area. She clears her throat when he stands to full height again, a watery laugh escaping her, "Pumpkin?"
Harvey shrugs, wrapping her in his arms again, "Yeah, I'd figure she'd have your hair, so, I thought it was an appropriate nickname."
"She?" Donna muses again.
"Call it paternal instinct," her boyfriend grins. She shakes her head at his antics, suddenly feeling lightheaded as an array of emotions fill her to the brim, feeling like she could burst or float any second now.
"Funny, my maternal instincts are telling me the same," she breathes into him, her arms winding around his neck as she lets her forehead drop against him, the night's whirlwind of emotions finally catching up to her.
Harvey chuckles when a yawn escapes her, her eyes fluttering against him, "You want to go to bed, mommy?"
Donna grins at the monicker, her eyes half closed against him, "Hmm, no, not yet," she pulls back from him, sending him a sleepy grin before she pecks him on the lips, turning around in his arms to look around their pending nursery room, "I just want to stay here for a bit."
Her low voice is accompanied by his own boyish glee, kissing the crown of her head as his hands settle on her stomach, starting a slow caress, "No arguments here."
