I know that it has been awhile since I updated, but I do want to finish this story. Let me know what you think!
The great hall buzzed with chatter as Rey stood just behind the door that would lead her into the room filled with her enemies. Every commander, general, and troop had come to see the newest recruit, and what they believed, the final nail in the resistance's coffin. Her heart beat loudly in her ears as she tried to steady herself. How was she going to do this? Surely those higher up in command would see right through her. Her voice would crack or she would start to sweat. Something would give her away. Surely…
A feeling of calm came over her, flooding her mind with positive thoughts. Thoughts that were not her own.
Keep calm… You will do great… Nobody will hurt you, if they even think of it I will make an example of them… I'll be right here beside you… Everything will be fine…
She turned around and looked up at Kylo. His face remained impassive, but his eyes held a tenderness that she couldn't deny. She smiled at him and took his hand. The action seemed to throw him off, as he looked down at their hands and then back to her face. He nodded.
"Are you ready?"
She swallowed hard but nodded in return. Gripping his hand, she followed him as they stepped out onto the platform that faced the crowd. They went silent as they watched them approach the microphone.
Kylo began to speak. "Welcome. Those of you who have been invited to this monumental event are the key leaders and forces of the First Order. For years, the resistance has used the Jedi to fuel their armies and inspire the weak minded sheep to follow them. With the help of force users, they were able to legitimize their cause. But no more!"
He held up her hand in his. "On this stage stands the last of the light sided force users. But as you can see, the darkness is too strong. She came to me, to join our forces and to help in eliminating any resistance that remains in the galaxy. Without further ado, I introduce you to Lady Rey!"
The room erupted into applause. Rey forced a smile onto her face. She knew it was all fake, but she hated the things Kylo had said. She would never help him destroy her friends. Rey was vaguely aware of Hux coming to stand beside her. When he spoke, the crowd quieted once more.
"Surely, Supreme Leader, Lady Rey would like to address the room herself. I think we would all like to hear it."
Rey looked to Hux and saw that he was staring at her with a twisted smile. She felt Kylo's hand tighten around hers, and his desire to throw him across the room. But he wouldn't do that in a crowd this size, and Hux knew it. She turned back to Kylo, and as she looked into his eyes, she saw worry. He didn't think she could do it. She took a deep breath and stepped up to the microphone.
"I am pleased to join such an established organization. For a long time, I falsely believed in the resistance. I was ignorant, lied to by the highest ranking among them. It was a childish belief. One bred from years of propaganda. All of that was wiped away when I met Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. He showed me the way, how things should be. He showed me that this universe lacks order, and the only way to gain it is by force. So, I will use all of my power to aid in your fight to bring order to the galaxy!"
Her words were met by another round of applause. She smiled, pleased with herself and newfound ability to lie.
Hux spoke up once more. "Well said, well said indeed. As our new Lady, I have a gift for you."
Rey turned and watched as two storm troopers dragged a man onto the stage. Her wore only the black underclothing of the storm troopers.
"This," Hux said, "is the storm trooper who defied orders and shot you upon arrival. As we can all see, you made a full recovery. That does not take away from the fact that this man disobeyed our Supreme Leader and made an attempt on your life. I have brought him here so that everyone can see what happens when you disobey orders."
As Hux spoke, Rey's stomach began to twist into knots. What was she supposed to do, kill him? She looked down at the man. He knelt before her, his head covered in sweat and his hands shaking profusely. He looked up at her, his own green eyes pleading.
"Please, my Lady, I'm sorry! I did not mean to, it was an accident! I misheard our orders. Please, please do kill me."
Rey's mouth had gone dry, as though filled with the sands of Jakku. Everyone watched her. A dark force user would kill this man without thought. She lifted her hand, squeezing his throat. The man gasped and grabbed at his neck, his eyes going wide as he tried to pull a rope from his neck that was not there. As she continued to squeeze, her hand began to shake. She couldn't do this. She wouldn't kill a man simply so that she could live. She would die before she bent to the dark side, and murder was the darkest a person could go. She began to lower her hand, but with a crack that echoed throughout the room, the man fell limp to the floor. Rey stared at him in horror, her hand still partially raised. She hadn't done that. She couldn't have. She had been about to let him go.
Another hand gripped her own, pulling her away from the body. She turned to Kylo. He turned to the crowd, who had watched in silence. "I hope this is a lesson to all who would consider challenging my Lady."
With that he turned and pulled her away. Rey looked back once more at the body, then at Hux. He watched her walk away, his face a mask of irritation. They walked in silence, and Rey didn't ask where they were going. They reached a door, and Kylo pressed some buttons on a key pad. They entered and the door slid closed behind them. Rey looked around and saw with some surprise that they were in a bedroom. His bedroom, she supposed.
He pulled the thick cape from his shoulders and threw it onto the bed. "I didn't want anyone to disturb us, and I thought this would be the best place."
Rey nodded, watching him. He removed his gloves, then his boots. He then sat in a chair, the only chair, and looked back at her. "You did well out there. Better than I thought you would do. I had no idea that Hux would do that, I'll be sure to punish him-"
She cut him off. "Did you kill that man?"
He didn't hesitate to answer. "Yes. I saw that you wouldn't be able to do it, so I took matters into my own hands."
Rey looked away from him, feelings of confliction waring within her. Should she yell at him or thank him?
She walked to the table beside the bed and began to remove her own gloves. She didn't like the way they restricted her fingers. As she began to remove her second glove, arms reached around her and began to do it for her. She hadn't even heard him approaching. She found that she was holding her breath as he pulled the glove from her hand and tossed it onto the table. He remained behind her, her back pressed against his chest and his hands still holding hers. He ran her fingers between his while his other hand massaged her wrist. Rey felt that heat that burned in her stomach whenever she was close to him like this, a burning desire that no matter how hard she tried she could not extinguish. She leaned back into him, the top of her head just below his chin.
Perhaps it was the darkness she had let creep in, but as she felt his warmth against her, she didn't want to push him away. She wanted more of him. All of him. She lifted her hand over her and wrapped it around his neck. He responded with gently yet hungry kisses to her wrist and forearm. This was the first time he had pressed his lips to her real skin, and she liked it. She wound her fingers into his hair and tugged firmly. His breath caught, and a moment later his mount found its way to her neck. He didn't kiss, necessarily, but ran his lips across her skin, causing goosebumps to erupt. His mouth moved to her ear where he paused for a moment, and then gave her earlobe a gentle bite.
An audible gasp escaped her mouth, and she spun around to face him. She wanted to kiss him, to tear the clothes from his body and shove him onto the bed. She looked up at him and he took her face into his hands. His eyes stared into hers, emotion poring from them.
He spoke quietly. "Rey. I want you more than I have ever wanted anything. Every time I see you, I can't help myself."
She leaned towards his mouth, desperate for him to kiss her. "Then do it."
He closed his eyes, but instead of leaning down to her, he shook his head. "No. You were right. If you are here against your will, I can't do this. Because I don't want you for just a moment or an hour. If I have you once, I will want you forever."
Rey stared up at him as he opened his eyes once more. He continued to speak softly. "I didn't just kill that man because I thought you couldn't do it. I didn't want you to. I knew that if you did, you would never be the same. I want you to join me, but I don't want you to be like me."
He released her face and stepped away from her. Rey frowned. "Sometimes I don't understand you."
He looked away from her. "I'm sorry."
He turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone.
