He watched as the silvery stag bounded through the trees to its hearts content. The war still raged on, leaving it his only companion besides Death.
But even this was coming to an end.
"Prongs…" He whispered sadly as the silver magic flickered gray. He barely had any happy memories left to keep his dear Patronus around. The beautiful stag stag slowed its movements to a simple trot and circled its master. Reaching out to pet it, the stag lightly butted its head against his palm.
"It's almost time, old friend. Looks like you'll be moving on like the rest of them."
The two watched each deeply before the stag shook its head in indignation and started to drag its master into the forest. He said nothing, just followed what seemed to be a final request. The two walked for what felt like hours before they came upon a set of bones. The deer nudged its master towards them and watched patiently as he picked up an animal skull from the skeleton. Confusion was written all over his face before the stag stuck his head in the skull. As understanding dawned on him, he couldn't help sadness creeping into his voice.
"Are you sure about this? You'll lose all the memories we shared if I do this. You might not want to stay by me afterwards..." He said as the stag pushed their foreheads together. The skull fell from his fingers with a soft thump onto the forest floor.
"Even if I forget, I will always be by your side master."
Tears streamed down his face as he wrapped his arms around his companions powerful neck. This was it, this was the possible end. He hadn't felt like this in years. He almost forgotten what loss felt like.
How much it hurt.
"It's gonna be okay…" He mumbled in reassurance, more to himself than anything as he struggled to remain composed. The ever present chill that surrounded him grew colder as vines slowly creeped their way from under his cloak. They inched across the bones and the stag at a sedate pace, seemingly giving two time to say their final goodbyes.
Fingers tightened in the thick, silvery scruff around the stag's neck as tears slowly dripped down his cheeks. The tears glowed like tiny crystals under the fading glow of the stag.
"Promise me you'll always protect me from the dark? Promise me that you'll always come back to me? Promise me that you'll still be there to save me… even if its from myself?" He cried as the glow finally faded out of existence.
Green eyes slowly blinked open as muddled thoughts tried to string together what had happened earlier. Chise slowly sat up as the uncomfortable feeling of being watched crawled over her. Looking around, she realized that she was back in her bed with Ruth wrapped around her in his human form. They were both propped up against her headboard with his legs on either side of her. The light of the moon bathed everything in a soft, comforting glow. It was almost peaceful.
But the feeling of being watched refused to leave. Looking out her window, Chise froze.
The woman from before was there and beside her was a man she didn't recognize. The man smiled gently, if a little sadly, as he slowly approached her bed. Chise could do nothing as the sudden urge to fall back to sleep over took her. As her eyes fluttered shut, Chise could barely make out him pressing something into Ruth's hand before placing a soft kiss to her forehead.
" Laborem administrari."
