Chapter 11 Understanding the situation and a mother's welcoming heart
A/n: so it's finally come to this... the day that I introduce Karin, the heavy wind. -long deep breath- in all honesty i have been fearing this part for the longest. I seriously made sure to study, ask questions and take photos of my notes in regards to this. I'm honestly very scared that I'm going to fuck up Karin's personality.
But this how I wanted to portray her when I explained it to someone long ago:
I want to make her more caring but understanding as to why she wants her daughters. Especially her youngest daughter Louise to be like her, and carry a strong reputation in both name and skill. Louise is considered a failure in her families eyes, and thus Karin believes that she has basically let her down.
If that makes sense in how I am portraying it.
Basically I trying to make Karin still sharp, but caring. And more loving than anything else for my silent knight story. As well as understanding that Louise wants to follow in her own path, and not her mother's.
But...I do want to try and dip my hand into it and give it a go. After all, you don't succeed unless you at least try.
Also, I still would like to know from all of you if I should still Louise still have confusing romantic feelings for Kyle or should I drop them.
Then again, besides Katie being a love interest, who else do you think should have feelings for Kyle:
Louise or Tiffania
Sadly Henrietta won't count for reasons.
I'll leave it up to you guys to pick. If nobody wants this ordeal with Louise to change, then I will keep her confusing feelings into the story until they develop further.
Okay...here we go. God I am very nervous about this...
Louise was still looking at her mother, she just couldn't believe that she was here, and so soon too. Louise was still looking at her mother, her mouth slightly hanging. Karin then leaned down to her youngest daughter.
"Come now, Louise" Karin spoke in a calming tone "Do not let your mouth hang out like that, It's not proper for a lady".
Louise quickly closed her mouth shut, "y-yes mother..." Louise stammered a little bit. No matter what, Louise always held great fear when her mother was around. The memories of her childhood were a reminder of that, and even when her family found out about her zero percent in magic, it felt like things only had gotten worse for her. And now, after hearing the truth of what Kirche said in regards to the law that she wanted to break being updated to where commoners would be forcefully taken from an adopted noble family and be sent to death was now making her worry if her mother would even consider adopting Kyle at all. As Louise was having so many things running around inside of her head, Karin then placed her hand on her head.
"It seems that you have many things on your mind, Louise" Karin expressed.
"Y-yes mother..." Louise muttered out.
However that's when Karin noticed her dragon crawl up to Louise's head and sniffed her hand a bit. Karin raised her eyebrow at the sight of him, she wanted to hear about her daughters familiar summoning, but Louise had forgotten to send a letter to let her know how it went. Hal then took one at Karin and he instantly waged his dragon tail as he then quickly crawled up Karin's arm, all the way up to her shoulder and nuzzled her cheek.
Karin glanced at Louise's baby dragon, she was very surprised that it was so affectionate towards her after just meeting her. However Karin quickly figured out the reason as to why that was when she glanced at her daughter. She placed her finger next to the dragon's chin and gently rubbed it, Hal let out a clam growl as he was pleased.
"Your familiar is very affectionate, Louise" Karin said as she then moved her fingers to the top of his head "I see that you have trained him well".
Louise gulped, rather hard actually. She felt a massive amount of shame, she couldn't tell her that her familiar was "given" to her as a gift by her former ex-familiar Kyle. Part of her wanted to lie, but she knew that wouldn't work on her, Karin could read a person easily. Louise gathered her words before she spoke again.
"Y-yes mother" Louise muttered "h-his n-name is Hal".
Karin glanced over at the baby dragon again, now with a smirk across her face. "Hal hm? An interesting name for a dragon. Although I am very surprised that he is so small" she noticed "Most baby dragons are the size of an average person. Yet yours is small enough that he can fit onto your shoulder with ease. Would you care to explain the reason for size, Louise?" Karin asked her daughter as her curiosity was now peeked.
Louise had to quickly remember what Kyle's letter said about what Hal was able to do in terms of growth. The only thing that she knew was that he could use Diamond breath. She was thinking very hard to remember until it hit her. "He is able to grow into any size without flaw" she stammered out in one go "And his ability is diamond breath".
Karin then stopped giving her daughter familiar's attention when she heard Louise explain the second half of Hal's skills. Karin placed her hands on her hips, now she wanted to know more about her familiar. Louise quickly assumed that she had said something out of line when she saw her mother put her hands on her hips.
"I'm s-sorry m-mother" Louise told her.
Karin just looked at her, why was her daughter sorry? She didn't do anything wrong in her eyes. Karin then gently took Hal off of her shoulder as she placed him back into Louise's hands. Louise held Hal close like a teddy bear, the sight brought back memories for Karin, memories that she wish she could change when she raised her daughters. Karin placed her hands on Louise's face, as Karin kneeled to meet her daughters gaze.
Her expression was still slightly sharp, but it quickly faded into a soft and loving expression.
"Louise, you have nothing to apologize for. Why did you think that you had to apologize for explaining your familiar's abilities to me?"
"I..I...I".
"It's alright, I'm not going to scold you, if that's what you're thinking. Just be honest with me".
Louise just looked at Hal, as Hal looked up at her. She felt his tail wag as he smiled at his mother. Louise then placed her dragon onto her shoulder again. "Hal was...given to me..." she admitted. Karin just looked at her daughter. This was something she didn't except to hear.
"Given to you?".
"Y-yes".
"So this dragon isn't your familiar?".
"N-no no, h-he is my familiar. He was just...given to me, by my...former familiar...".
Now this made Karin even more curious, how does a former familiar give you a new familiar? Karin then leaned up as she looked at her daughter. They clearly had a lot to talk about, because she wasn't truly understanding how this even made sense. Louise looked up at her mother as she then asked her something.
"Are you...disappointed in me?" Louise asked. She just had to know how her mother felt about all of this. Her mother trained her and her sisters when they were little, due to Karin's rule of steel, it effected each of them differently. However it effected Louise the most in a negative way. Karin knew she wasn't the best mother, but she thought back then that if she raised and trained them the way that she did, then they would make a name for themselves. Make a strong reputation in both name and skill. She wanted was she believed was best for them.
However that's when she realized.
She wasn't making them to be their own person.
She was making her children be more like her.
Karin knew that the Vallière family held a strong reputation all across Tristain. To nobles, many things mattered to them. Wealth, power, honor, titles, pride, land, the list was long and Karin knew that. When she found out that Louise was unable to do magic, needles to say this didn't go so well with her nor her father. This earned Louise disapproval from both her family and her peers, and she became even colder towards Louise as a result of it. But over time, that coldness began to melt, and Karin slowly started to realize the errors of her ways. She knew that no matter what, no matter how many explosions that Louise did.
In the end she was still her daughter.
When Karin and her husband obtained the adoption papers yesterday, they had many questions about the matter. But it also gave Karin a reason to decide to go to the school, and make amends for how she treated Louise when she was younger. She wanted to be there for her children, and she was going to do her best to be a mother for her. Karin then held out her hand to Louise to take hold of.
"I think we should discuss this matter with Osmond, Louise" Karin told her "Because there are many things that I would like to know. Especially about your familiar as well".
Louise nodded and was about to take her mother's hand, however that's when she remembered that she had to get Kyle. Louise then moved her hand back to her side, Karin was a bit surprised by her daughters action.
"Louise?".
"Just...one moment" Louise explained "I need to go get Kyle". And with that, Louise ran off to grab Kyle from Colbert's office. Karin just watched her daughter run off, leaving her with many questions about who this Kyle person was and why she had to get him so they could talk about the matter. However that's when she remembered the adoption papers. Karin couldn't help but smile a bit.
"Kyle, hmm?" Karin pondered out loud "So I will be adopting a son".
-Colbert's office-
Jean was reading over the sign language book with his class, as he was going over each number and hand sign for it. He had to start the class due to Louise not coming back on time, so she would have to catch up in her studies with him latter. Kyle was multitasking; both by going over his sign language again, and talking with Katie. The two of them having a little conversation under the table. Kyle and Katie glanced at each other's hands that were placed in their lap. Both of them moving their fingers to make the correct letter.
Kyle: So Katie, this familiar exhibition. How big of a deal is it? I mean, I know that it's going to be a much bigger deal due to the princess coming this year. But despite that, how much of a big deal is this for second year students?
Katie had her eye on Kyle's hand as she watched each hand gesture move and understood it accordingly. She was a quick learner for just getting into sign language. Katie the began to move her hand:
Katie: It's a very huge big deal for second year students. All second years are required to attend it, and they train the day before the event.
Kyle nodded as he then moved his hand again:
Kyle: Are only second years allowed to see the exhibition?
Reading this made Katie sigh a bit, she began to move her hand to respond to his question:
Katie: Sadly you are correct, only the second years can watch the exhibition. While first and third years must still attend classes.
Kyle: I see...so I won't be able to see you, huh?
Katie carefully read his hand gestures and quickly blushed, she turned her head away from him for a little bit before speaking to him again:
Katie: n-no...you unfortunately won't be able to see me when you have your exhibition.
Kyle let out a sigh when he read her hand gestures. He was really hoping for his friends to be there, but he would have to settle for a few that were there. However he then glanced at Katie who was now blushing a little more, that's when he saw her hand move:
Katie: Kyle...
Kyle quickly responded:
Kyle: yes Katie?
Katie: umm, would you like to go out on a picnic sometime?
Kyle thought about the suggestion until he answered her question:
Kyle: of course, I'd be more than happy to have a picnic with you, Katie.
Katie blushed even more when Kyle gave her an answer, however she wanted to ask him something a bit more personal. The two made sure to listen to Colbert as he explained sign language, then as soon as he went back to the chalkboard, they talked again:
Katie: Kyle...
Kyle: hm? What is it, Katie?
Katie: have you...well...found someone here yet?
Kyle was a bit taken aback by her question, now he was curious as to what she meant. He then glanced at Colbert before quickly moving his gaze back at Katie to answer her question:
Kyle: I'm a bit lost on that one, Katie. Could you elaborate a bit.
Katie was now fully beat red, she wanted to straight up tell him that she liked him. But she didn't want to do that just yet, after all she did want to know him a bit more before confessing. Katie then gathered her thoughts before she explained:
Katie: what I-.
Just then the door opened as Louise came into the room. Colbert had just finished his sentence that he wanted them to say in sign language. He looked at Louise with a bit of surprise. "Miss Vallière, you're late. I had to start the lesson without" Colbert explained.
"I'm sorry mr Colbert, but I have some news. My mother is here, and I need to take Kyle with me".
Everyone just looked at Louise, absolutely silent, some of them were showing signs of fear at the mention of her mother already being here. Colbert regained his composure as he spoke. "I see..." he said with a hint of fear in his voice before turning to Kyle "Well mr Scherer, I do hope that everything works out for you with madam Vallière. However before you go, I apologize for asking but-".
Kyle held up his automail hand as he summoned another grimoire of accusation before pushing his seat back and walking over to Colbert and handing it to him. Colbert gently took the book, he thankfully nodded at Kyle for the second grimoire. "Well best be on your way" Colbert told him, Kyle nodded at the man before he walked to the door as Louise was about to close it, she looked at Colbert.
"I will make sure to come back and study what I have missed after this meeting mr Colbert" she promised him before closing the door. Colbert and the others let out a large sigh. They wished Kyle the best, for the boy would need it. Katie then placed her elbows on the table, pouting as she went back to learning.
"I guess I'll have to talk to him later..." she whined.
Louise and Kyle quickly walked down the hallway to meet with Karin. Kyle glanced over at Louise, he could see her shaking a bit. Kyle placed his automail hand on her head and gently rubbed it, then like a switch, Louise started to calm down. "Ahhh, thank you, Kyle" Louise thanked him as she glanced over at him to see that smile of his. She loved that smile that was on his face, she was happy that he didn't show signs of his depression anymore, and believed that he had moved on. Then again, telling someone and asking them to promise to not outright kill themselves would be difficult for anyone when they had lost everything in one year.
But then she felt herself begin to feel her heart beat like it did before, Louise started to get red again as her cheeks lit up once more. She couldn't understand it, why did she feel this way about Kyle. She shouldn't just didn't understand them. 'Why...why am I always feeling like this whenever I'm close and alone with him? This shouldn't be happening, I have Wards, he's the man that I love! Maybe...maybe is just my heart having a sibling affection for him. Yes! That's what it is' She thought as she then remembered when her and Wards had first met. Louise sighed in bliss of that little memory, she smiled as she then felt her heartbeat begin to calm down a bit. That's when she felt Kyle tap her shoulder, Louise glanced over at him.
"You okay, Louise?" He silently asked her.
Louise nodded as she smiled back at him "Yes, I'm okay" she reassured him "I was just thinking about my fiancé Wards".
Kyle smirked at her when she told him that. Now Louise was curious.
"What?".
"Heh, I'd like to meet this Wards guy. He sounds interesting and cool guy. You are very lucky to have a special someone in your life, Louise. I'm happy for you".
Louise couldn't help but blush all over.
"Yes..." she muttered as she smiled more "I truly am very lucky".
The two made a turn around the corner to see Karin waiting for Louise. Louise's calm mood quickly died at the sight of her mother. Kyle on the other hand just blinked at her, he then looked at Louise, then back at Karin. He could see the massive resemblance. Karin raised any eyebrow at the new face before her. As they stopped right in front of her, Karin then approached the unfamiliar person as she examined him.
"Interesting" Karin muttered as she then walked around him, she looked at his whole appearance before stopping right in front of him again. She then noticed his arms, she also assumed like many others that his false limbs were armored gauntlets. That's when Karin looked over at Louise.
"Is this the boy who you wanted to adopt?" Karin asked her.
Louise nodded her head at her mother "Yes, mother" she explained "This is Kyle. He is the person that I sent the adoption papers to you and father about, he's also...my former familiar...".
Hearing that last part come out of Louise's mouth made Karin understand what she had meant when she said that she had been given her dragon familiar. Karin was now ever so curious to know about her new adopted son. But she would save the questions for when they were with Osmond.
But she had to ask one thing.
"So you summoned a knight?".
Louise shook her head.
"A noble?".
She shook her head again.
"A commoner?".
There was a heavy silence.
Karin took that as her answer before looking back at Kyle. She then sighed, the boy was alright, and she truly had no qualms with adopting him despite him being a commoner. Hell, she always wondered what having a son would be like in her life, but the reason she sighed was because of the updated new law. Orphaned children that were not from a former noble background and secretly adopted into a noble family were sentenced to death. Karin had seen her fair share of noble friends absolutely fall apart when they had to watch their adopted children be killed in front of a crowd of current corrupt nobles. The current nobility was corrupt, power hungry, and ruthless. It wasn't like the old days when she and Sandorion were younger. The modern day of nobility was flawed, very flawed, and her friend queen Marianne was going to step down and hand all of the responsibility to her daughter.
Karin then placed her hand on Kyle's head, to her his hair was very strange. Well in his world the color of black and green would be considered normal, but in this world is was very foreign. Kyle glanced up at Karin, he could almost feel her cold gaze, but it quickly eased up when she smiled at him.
"Louise" Karin glanced over at her daughter "The adoption papers that you sent me said that he is absolutely mute".
Louise nodded at her mother until Karin glanced back at Kyle. "Is this true, young man?" Karin now asked him "Are you truly unable to speak?". She just wanted to see for herself, it wasn't that she didn't believe her daughter or what the paperwork said about him. She just wanted to see. Kyle then nodded at her as he then tried to use his vocal cords to speak to her, she heard absolutely nothing, there was no sound, not even a simple peep came from his throat. Karin's soured a bit at this.
"So it is true" she muttered as she then sweetly stroked his head "That is truly unfortunate that you are unable to make a single sound with your voice. But I am very curious as to what caused such a thing. Could you please explain it in your own way?".
Kyle nodded as he was about to pull out his personal notebook that had everything about his life to her, but Karin stopped him from doing so. "I think that we should head to Osmond's office to have a private conversation". Louise and Kyle both agreed that was a good idea, the three then made their way to see Osmond once more.
-Osmond's office-
The room was quiet, far too quiet. The room only consisted of Louise, Kyle, Karin, and Osmond. Longueville was gone for the day, so this left Osmond with some careful reading time and smoking to himself. However when Karin had came to him to make her presence known, you could have almost seen the color wash right off his face at the sight of her. Karin was sitting with her daughter Louise by her side, her familiar Hal sitting on the table that was at the center. Kyle sat on the other end as he was just looking at Karin nervously. Karin had asked Osmond about the the boys abilities, and he handed her the grimoire of accusation that was summoned by him. Better to get the long part out of the way first before going into his personal past.
Karin read every page carefully, every page explained in full detail of each weapon or item that could be summoned as well it's skill. Kyle had his personal notebook on the table, he placed it there after Karin was done reading the grimoire since she wanted to learn about his newfound magic abilities.
"This is very interesting" Karin broke the silence as she finished the book and closed it gently "And...highly disturbing".
The made Louise and Osmond look at Karin with confusion.
"Disturbing?" Louise muttered as her mother glanced at her and nodded.
Osmond broke from his nervousness to speak "Disturbing? How so? I've fully read the book on some parts. But I couldn't find anything disturbing about some of his abilities. What could be disturbing about his boy's now given magic abilities?".
Karin sighed deeply before she spoke, she glanced over at Osmond with all seriousness in her eyes.
"Where you aware that one of his abilities could allow him to literally control time?".
This made both Louise and Osmond shout one word:
"WHAT?!".
That's when they both looked at Kyle in shock, Louise just started stammering with her words. "Y-y-you c-can c-con-control time itself...". Kyle rubbed the back of his head as he grunted a bit. "So you got to that part I see..." Kyle Silently muttered as he looked at Karin. Karin raised an eyebrow at him until she then looked at her daughter.
"Louise, could you be a dear and translate what he says for me" she asked of her. Louise nodded quickly as she looked at Kyle. "Could you repeat that again for my mother please" Louise asked of him. Kyle nodded as he said it again. Louise was getting better at reading his lips.
"He said so you got to that part I see".
Karin nodded at Kyle "I did, In all honesty. Even I had to make sure I didn't misread that. But what was written in this book is true, and it has a very large dangerous history as well. But that's not the only thing that disturbs me".
"Th-there's more?" Osmond asked.
"There is, and it's in one of the category's. You are able to summon a staff that has a skill called: Lunar eclipse. However, this version of a lunar eclipse coats the sky a dark pink and violet color. And a large crimson red moon appears in the sky. However, although the skill is harmless, it renders a mage absolutely unable to cast magic spells. Unless the spell is broken, this makes a mage absolutely useless in life" Karin finished.
This made Osmond and Louise go pale, Kyle had the ability to absolutely cancel out a noble's magic, making them absolutely useless and taking away the one thing that made them who they were. Karin spoke again "No doubt, if you used this skill, then you could basically destroy a whole kingdom if you wanted to. Or be a thief and get away with many valuables with the ability to control time. Needless to say, you'd be unstoppable. And in turn, a massive threat to all of Halkeginia".
Hearing this made Osmond and Louise become silent, Kyle had this much power to do as he pleased. And he could do it with ease, he would truly be Halkeginia's most powerful person on the planet. Kyle on the other hand sighed as he now looked at Karin with a narrow gaze. He silently spoke as Louise translated it to her mother.
"He said that you make it sound like I'm some sort of villain..." Louise said.
Karin closed her eyes for a bit "I don't mean to make it sound like that. And I apologize for letting you assume that I only saw you as only just that" Karin then opened her eyes, a smile now present on her face "But your magic abilities do show powerful potential if used in the right hands and in the right way".
Kyle silently spoke as Louise translated.
"He said that he's not a weapon" Louise told her.
Karin nodded, her smile fading a little bit "No, you're not. But those of higher status will think...otherwise. And they will do everything in their power to have you, I have also read about the fusion ability that you possess, that was labeled in the book. That would make you on par to a hexagonal rank. If word got out about you...then there's no telling what would happen to this world. I don't think that even I could stop you in all honesty".
Now it was Osmond and Louise's turn to look at Karin with surprising shock. Kyle crossed his arms, he read the book the day he stayed up and wrote down ideas. He knew all of his abilities, but he made a promise to himself that day as well.
And that was not to cross the line with his power.
Kyle then silently spoke once more as he finished. Louise stopped staring at her mother to quickly translate it to her. "He said that he won't abuse his power, he doesn't see himself as some higher being". Karin nodded until Kyle Silently muttered something else, causing Louise to let out a gasp. Karin turned to her.
"Y-you'd do that? For me!?".
"What did Kyle say, Louise?".
Louise quickly turned to her mother "H-he said that he was going to use the Lunar Eclipse ability during the familiar exhibition!".
Karin quickly turned her attention back to Kyle "I thought you just said that you wouldn't abuse your power, why would you instantly go against your own words?" She questioned him as he quickly responded back. Louise gulped when she finished translating what Kyle had said. Now this made Karin very curious on the matter.
"Louise, what did he say?".
"He...said to get back...at the students...".
This instantly peeked Karin's curiosity now. "Get back at the students? Could you explain this please?". Kyle silently spoke as Louise translated the whole thing.
"He said that he is only going to use this ability once, on those who made fun of me and consider me a failure..." Louise continued "He understands that although the commoners have nothing, they fear the nobility who have magic. He has read that those of nobility have no fear, but he wants to break that theory and install fear into them. He wants them to feel absolutely powerless and useless. He wants to be the one dangling a carrot in front of them to try and grab. With your permission of course".
Karin understood all of what Louise translated to her, but that last part made her glance at Kyle. "With my permission?" Karin asked him as Kyle nodded and silently explained as Louise focused on his lips. "He said that he would like for you to be his retainer as well as his mother, someone who holds his power down and keeps him in check. He's human after all and prone to making mistakes like anyone else. There will be times when he slips up".
Karin nodded as she took it all in "I see..." she said "Well then, now that we have gotten the long part out of the way. There is something that I would like to sadly inform you". Kyle wasn't liking this tone in Karin's voice, it didn't sound good one bit. "I am sorry to tell you this, but due to the new updated law. I cannot adopt you into the Vallière family". There was a heavy silence in the room once again, but it was quickly broken when Kyle leaned forward as he looked very upset with what Karin had just informed him. Kyle silently spoke as Louise placed her finger over her mouth.
"Kyle! That has nothing to do with that!" Louise argued.
"What did he say, Louise?" Karin asked her.
Louise turned to her mother "He said that it's because I wasn't born with magic when I first came here, is that it? Or is it because you nobles look down on the lower class like worthless ants that could so easily step on! Or is it due to your reputation and being well known? Or...is it because that I cannot speak! Why is that you cannot adopt me!?" Louise finished translating. Karin quickly looked at him, she knew that he would be upset, and she needed to quell his anger quickly.
"It has nothing to do with how we of the old ways view those of the lower class" Karin explained "Nor does it have anything to do with you not having magic, nor a lack of a voice. As for reputation, that affects us nobles, but it's something that passes over time as the years go by. It's nothing too serious. As nobles it is our duty to protect those of the lower class, but it seems that those of this current day have forgotten that purpose. They abuse their magic, install fear into those that they look down upon, as well as commit other unspeakable atrocities..." Karin let those words hang in the air for a bit before she continued "You see Kyle, back when I was younger, there was no lower class or higher class. Everyone was equal and held one another with welcoming arms. However over time, things began to change...".
Karin cleared her throat as she started.
"As the years went by, laws started to form. They were by no means like the ones that we have today. But they were understandable to a degree that is...one of the laws was those of nobility caught adopting a commoner into a noble family would only just result in slight shame, dishonor, rumors, and very little slander. But the commoner could still stay with their noble family and be at peace. But things began to...spiral out of control for the worst. After Queen Marianne's husband had passed, a power struggle had come forth. And now Queen Marianne has decided to step down, and pass the responsibility of Queen to her daughter Henrietta. The current royal court is very corrupted, and their way of viewing commoners is absolutely disgraceful and disgusting!".
Karin spat that last part out with cold venom in her voice as she paused before speaking again. However she noticed how Kyle had his head to the side, he was curious about how the current nobility and it's corruption as there was no information about it in the books that he read. "Are you curious to know about how the modern day of nobility treats people?" Karin asked him as she got a nod from the boy.
"The modern day of nobility sees commoners like an infestation. To them, they are a stain, and won't hesitate to get rid of you as if you are nothing. There are currently so many laws that are against commoners that it's absolutely ridiculous! To the point that there are even petty non minor things within the laws as well!" Karin was sounding colder and colder as she spoke about the current nobility. In her eyes she hated it, she honestly missed the old days of how people were treated.
Kyle then silently said something as Louise told her mother "He said that he wants to know what are the major issues and differences of the laws that are against the commoners. Both old and new. If you have the time to explain them" she informed. Karin took one deep breath, she knew that this was going to be a long one. But she didn't want to take up the whole day talking about laws and such, for she still wanted to learn about him
"There's far too many to list. But I do have books on the matter" Karin told him "But I will tell you one of the most vile in my opinion. Remember how I said about the law involving commoners being adopted into a noble family?".
Kyle nodded.
"That law has been changed to something a bit more barbaric. In the old ways, they would leave you alone and that would be the end of it. Now if a noble family is caught adopting a commoner. Then that child is forcefully taken from their family and sentenced to death".
Hearing this made Louise shiver at the thought when Kirche informed her of the law being updated. Osmond heavily sighed, as he, like Louise, was used to the old law. Kyle however had his head down. His hair shadowed his eyes, and his expression was blank. Karin just looked at him for a bit. That's when he summoned one of the two legendary weapons: Excalibur. The swords platinum shined, as did it's gold guard and sky blue hilt. Kyle placed his hands onto the swords flat oval pommel, as the swords blade then quickly started to glow a strong bright yellow. Karin quickly knew that he was activating it's skill: Knight King's Strike.
"All the more reason...for the wolf knights of Setsuna to be established..." Kyle silently muttered to himself.
"Kyle..." Louise spoke in a low tone.
"What is it, Louise?" Karin asked her Louise sighed a bit. She turned to her mother "Kyle...has plans" Louise said "He wants to get approval from the royal family to have his own mercenary team made. We'll be the only ones in this team, as well as our friends. He said that he doesn't like how those of the commoner lower class are being mistreated by those of the nobility. He knows that not all nobles are this cruel, but he wants to..." Louise started to trail off a bit. Karin quickly picked up on it.
"So you want to establish your own personal team to challenge against the corruption that is within the current nobility is that correct?" Karin asked.
Kyle nodded at Karin, he then looked directly at her, his gaze still shadowed by his hair. Karin could see the determination within his eyes, she could see that like her, he also despised how things were currently run. It was unfair to them, everything was cut off from the lower class. From extravagant food, high class medicine, clothes, libraries, land, high class shops and stores. Everything was against the lower class, if those of the lower class tried to send a complaint, it would be ignored, for who would believe the lowly words of a worthless commoner.
Kyle then sighed as he tightened his grip on the sword, he began to ponder if there could be a loophole that could be exploited to be allowed adoption into the Vallière family. Kyle then snapped his automail fingers as he had an idea, he quickly silently spoke to Louise, she pondered if there was a loophole in the law. Karin raised an eyebrow at them.
"It would seem that the two of you have something on your mind" she said.
"That we do, Kyle asked if there was a way to get around the law. A loophole if you will" Louise explained to her mother. Karin started to think as well, she never thought that a loophole could be done with the law. She then glanced over to Kyle who silently expressed a part of the law to Louise. "Oh! I think it might work" Louise said with hope in her voice.
"What is his idea on the matter?" Karin asked her.
Louise turned to her mother "Kyle said that what if we forge something that would pretend to have some noble background on him. Maybe that might work" Louise explained. Karin thought about the idea, committing forgery in order to protect Kyle, this was something that she needed to speak with Marianne about in private. She then glanced at the notebook that was placed on the table, she then reached for it and looked through it. "I think that is a matter that I should talk to queen Marianne about. I will send you a latter on the final say on the matter" Karin expressed as she then proceeded to stand up from her seat. She then looked at Kyle and gave him a warm smile.
"I also give you my permission to use your ability for the familiar exhibition. But let me warn you, if you show off this ability, then your peers will see you in a different way". Karin warned Kyle as Kyle then made the Excalibur disappear. He sighed as he crossed his arms "I'm glad that you give me permission to use that ability. But as for my so called "peers", they are not my peers! The friends that I have at the moment are my only peers, and I will not associate with those that see the lower class as pathetic!"
Louise explained what he just said to her, Karin nodded at him. "I can understand that. I also hope that you continue to help my little Louise with your abilities, like you did when you gave her that dragon" Karin added as she then looked at her daughter "And as for you, Louise. I want you to keep an eye on your brother, as well as follow your own path to become a great mage in your own way". This made Louise look at her mother in surprise, she never expected her to say that in all her life.
"You...you want me to follow my own path?" Louise asked her as Karin gave another nod. "I do, I realized that I shouldn't have forced you and your sisters to basically be like me. I should have allowed the three of you to follow your own path" Karin finished with a motherly smile as she then hugged her daughter. Louise returned it, she felt happy that her mother was allowing her to be a mage in her own way. Karin then gestured for Kyle to come over and receive a hug as well. Kyle rubbed the back of his head, he didn't expect Louise's mother to be asking that so soon, but walked over to her as she hugged him as well. The three had a hug for a brief moment until Karin broke apart from them.
"I will talk this over with Queen Marianne on this matter. I do suggest that you keep this conversation that we had private" Karin reminded them in a serious tone. Kyle nodded as Louise nodded quickly. She then looked at Kyle once last time "I'm sorry that we got off topic and didn't discuss about your past, but hopefully once this is all finished. We will have time to talk about this more". And with that, Karin took her leave. Louise sighed as Kyle scratched the back of his head as he then gently grabbed Louise's hand and walked downstairs.
Louise blushed when she glanced at his hand, but broke of her train of thought to ask him something. "Where are we going?". Kyle looked at her as he smirked at her, "We're going shopping" he said "As of today, we're going to start your training Louise!". Louise started to smile, she was finally going to learn how to fight in hand to hand combat. However she then suddenly had forgotten about Hal and broke her hand away.
"Sorry! Just let me go back and get Hal" she said as she ran back upstairs. Kyle watched her as she went back up, he then looked at his lightning gloves and tightened them, as the sparks of electricity surged around his hand.
"I think it's time that we show them the meaning of fear...".
A/n: okay! Whew! Done!...I think I fucked up Karin's personality badly honestly. I understand that I wanted to go for a more caring mood for her, but...I feel like I went a bit off the rails and made it far too out of character. I would like to hear your opinions on the matter.
Well, Kyle is finally going to train Louise and the others.
Karin is going to help him get adopted.
And the familiar exhibition is going to get the mother of all "fuck you".
Hope you guys liked this. Many comments are welcomed.
