Chapter 23
Toothless' POV
We all decided to return to Berk for the funeral. It seemed more appropriate and honorable. It has been two days since my life officially ended. I lost my beloved mate and our baby. When the riders gave me an antidote for the dragon root so I could wake up, they had to tell me that they could not save him. For a day I would not let anyone get near me or Hiccup's body. They finally convinced me that a funeral was needed to properly honor my love. I was the one to light his boat on fire first. I gave a roar of despair as I watched the boat burn away. I was not just in emotional pain but physical as well. Loosing my mate I was bonded with caused my whole body to hurt. I knew I was not going to be around much longer. I would make sure of it.
As I tried to stop sobbing I spotted Astrid and the others walk up to me. "It's your fault he's gone," Astrid said coldly.
"Yeah if you two had never become mates. None of this would of happened!" Snotlout spat at me.
"Your selfish actions got our best friend killed," said Fishlegs.
"Perhaps I was wrong. Maybe some dragons are bad," said Valka.
"Murderer!" the twins chanted.
Normal POV
The Night Fury woke from his nightmare screeching. He frantically looked around the dimly lit cabin when Valka rushed over to calm him down. She petted his head as he tried to slow his breathing. This was not this first time Toothless had that dream and it probably would not be the last. The incident with Thrash happened a week ago. Hiccup was alive and so was the baby but he was in a coma. When Toothless had roared for help all of the island could hear him. The riders quickly extinguished the fire and pulled Hiccup out of the cabin. He was not hurt but breathing in too much smoke caused him to loose consciousness. After they tended to him and gave Toothless the dragon-root antidote, they laid him in a bed in the guest cabin. Toothless never left his side ever since. A Viking also always stayed with them in case he woke up or Toothless needed comforting. Gothi said all they could do now was wait and hope he would recover.
Shortly after the incident Slash tracked down Thrash and carried him away. No one knew for sure what he did with him but the dragon likely either killed him or abandoned him somewhere he could never escape from. The other Vikings on the Edge worked to repair Hiccup and Toothless' cabin and to improve the islands security. They needed the work anyway as a distraction from worrying about their friend.
After recovering from the fear of the nightmare, Toothless cooed in appreciation to Valka before checking on Hiccup. His mate was breathing steadily and did not appear to be in any pain. He was told, however, that there was a chance he would never wake up and die. With Hiccup in this condition Toothless felt their bond weaken which worried him even more. He rested his chin on Hiccup's belly and felt relief in their baby's movements.
Every day Toothless would try everything he could to wake Hiccup up. He would lick his face and speak to him through their bond. He had no idea if Hiccup could hear him but it was worth it to try.
Good morning Hiccup. I love you so much. I wish I could see your beautiful eyes again. Last night Meatlug laid an egg. Everyone was surprised it was only one egg since Gronkles usually have many. Us dragons already knew but Stormfly told me how funny it was for Fishlegs to awkwardly tell the riders that he mated for life with Meatlug. We're not they only ones anymore.
The egg hatched today. Luckily it was put outside so nothing got damaged when it exploded. It's a boy they named Fishmeat. He looks just like Meatlug and you can't tell that he's part human. He's really cute and you need to wake up to meet him. I can't wait for us to meet our baby.
Fishlegs made this thing that lets him carry Fishmeat in front of him hooked to his chest. It's pretty funny looking but it also seems like a good idea to keep the baby safe. Fishmeat seems to be very smart for his age. I wonder if he got that from his father.
Our friends finished fixing our house today. We just moved you to our bed which survived the fire. I hope it's much more comfortable for you.
Hiccup it's been almost two weeks since you fell asleep. Please wake up. I can't live without you and I miss you so much.
Toothless was in their bed with him and was hugging his mate closely. He could feel tears in his eyes and bent down to kiss Hiccup. He then laid his head down and sighed. A few minutes later he heard Hiccup in his mind. His head shot up with his ears standing up. He looked down to see Hiccup still asleep but he knew for sure that he could hear Hiccup calling him through their bond.
