AN: I was singing this earlier today and I was like, hey, that sounds like something Legolas would sing. So here it is.

Disclaimer: I don't own the song (Peter Seeger does) and I don't own LOTR (JRR Tolkien does).

Legolas stood on a cliff near Minas Tirith, staring down at the bare field below. The wind whipped around him, blowing back his hair in a smooth stream of gold against the blue sky. The sun danced across his features, emphasizing his blue eyes and graceful body. All was quiet except the whispers of the trees and the splashes of the waters, sounds that no human would have noticed, but sounds that an elf heard quite clearly.

Legolas let his eyes wander over the field and to the forest beyond. The night had been long, the death of Aragorn son of Arathorn had worn down everyone. Legolas felt a song come unbidden to his lips as his eyes searched for color in the vast sea of green below him.

Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Gone to young girls, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

His heart went out to Arwen, who would never survive the death of her lover. The elves were immortal, but only to a point and Arwen's love for Estel had doomed her from the beginning.

Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone to young men, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

He had known Estel since his birth, and Legolas would never forget the little boy running around Rivendell. His innocent face remained imbedded in Legolas' memory, even then he was a little scruffy.

Where have all the young men gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young men gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone to soldiers, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

His mind drifted years later, when Aragorn joined him on the quest to destroy the ring with the four hobbits (and Gandalf, Gimli and Boromir). Aragorn fought bravely and led his people to victory, finally reclaiming the throne. Legolas had enjoyed fighting along side the man, following him through thick and thin.

Where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, a long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Legolas felt his eyes water, though if the wind or his memories caused it, he knew not. All mortals died, no matter how immortal they seemed, and thus was the case with the valiant king. A tear rolled down his smooth cheek as his eyes found what they had been searching for.

Where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

There, in the midst of the green field, was a single blue flower. A sign of hope in the reviving world.

With a light heart and a soft smile, Legolas turned away to see the white sail on the blue river below. The war was over and the land was renewing itself, love was in the air. Soon Legolas would leave Middle-Earth and join his kin in the Havens, traveling with Gimli again for perhaps the last time.
