Specklekit awoke, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the moonlight that was filtering through the nursery's entrance. She yawned, rolling onto her back, and grinned as she realised what day it was. It's the full moon! She twisted around and jumped to her paws, accidentally brushing another cat's fur. She froze as they let out a sleepy mumble, then relaxed as the cat settled back into their soft snore. The kitten cautiously picked her way through the tangle of pelts and tails, and rushed out through the opening that invited in such friendly radiance. She grinned. This would be a night to remember.
RubbleClan's camp at night inexorably looked different to how it did when Specklekit was usually up and about. She kneaded her paws in the leaf litter and gazed around her. She managed to pick out the cherry tree where Rubblestar liked to lounge about, and let out a mrrp of satisfaction as she recognised other features outlined against the night sky.
A lazy leaf drifted down in front of her, and she gave a mighty leap to pin it to the ground. She let out a low growl - I'm going to be the best hunter ever - and settled back on her haunches, watching the leaf with her iron stare. Of course a gust of wind appeared out of nowhere, and Specklekit huffed as it was carried away. She chased it through the camp, making several futile attempts to capture it again. The little cat had unwittingly made it right to the clump ferns that marked the edge of the camp, and she burst through them with an indignant yowl.
Shaking herself off, Specklekit gaped at the forest around her. It's huge… Twisting this way and that, she stumbled over a twig and ran backwards into a tree with a dull thud. Shaking her head, she peered up through the branches to find the very top. Sadly it was just a tiny bit too dark, and she dug his claws into the ground in frustration. She was on the verge of attempting to climb the tree when the wind picked up again, blowing an interesting scent towards her. She paused, sniffing the air. It smelled strongly of fresh kill, but a subtle savour of something sweet mingled throughout it. Milk? Honey? Herbs? All thoughts of the tree consigned to oblivion, Specklekit began towards it, increasing her pace as she grew more confident with the terrain.
After what seemed like an eternity, the little white kitten picked her way across a shallow runnel. Without noticing, her surroundings had shifted to wide, open fields of grass that came up to her muzzle. The feeling of the cold water woke her up, and she stopped. Specklekit was completely lost and utterly exhausted. Shaking, she crawled into a bracken patch and curled up tightly, trying to trap what little heat she had left. The last thoughts in her mind as she slowly drifted off were of her family and of her Clan.
However, there was one question pulsing through her head, refusing to be ignored. How am I going to get home? It raged and crashed against her consciousness, until the tiredness finally overwhelmed her and she was enveloped in the darkness of sleep.
