Chapter 1: Sarah's Funeral
Thoughts
"Joel." Tommy said. "Come on Joel, we have to go."
"I'm not leaving her, Tommy; I'm not leaving Sarah, I can't…"
"Joel…," Tommy says as he places a hand on his brother's shoulder, "She's dead there's nothing we can do."
"Don't you think I know that;" Joel cried out, angrily. She's the only one I have left."
"You have me." Tommy said sympathetically.
Gunshots rang out in the silence that had surrounded the brothers. When the air had quieted once more, Joel spoke up.
"Can you help me get her home?"
"No Problem"
It was nearly noon by the time they arrived back at the house. Tommy put Sarah's body on the table while Joel went into the backyard and started to dig. Tommy called out an hour later, saying he was leaving and that he would be back around later on.
Tommy returned to the house around six-thirty that night with an angelic headstone as well as a high-end casket. Heading into the backyard he finds the hole empty. Proceeding to walk inside the house he discovers that Sarah is missing as well. He is startled as he hears a noise upstairs. Taking the stairs two at a time he finds Joel crying with Sarah lying on her bed as if she were asleep. He sits down next to Joel at the edge of the bed and sees he has a card in his hand. Taking the card he skims the letter written inside.
Dear Dad,
Let's see…
you're never around, you
hate the music I'm into, you
practically despise the movies I
like; and yet somehow you still
manage to be the best dad every year
How do you do that? J
Happy Birthday, pops
Sarah
"Why wasn't it me, Tommy?" why wasn't it me.
Joel cried himself to sleep that night while Tommy remained awake to watch after his older brother as an old phrase from a tv show popped into his head.
'If you can't run you you can't do that find someone to carry you.'
The next morning Tommy and Joel moved the headstone in place and laid Sarah to rest in the hole that Joel had dug the day before.
"What are we going to do now?" Tommy asked after they had filled in the grave
"I don't know…" Joel softly whispered into the wind. I don't know.
