A/N: I've been out of town with no time to write, so I thought I'd share this short story I wrote a few months ago for a contest. Some of you may have already read it. Enjoy!
"I can't believe you've never put a Lego set together," Sheldon said as he carefully slit open the Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters box.
"I guess I never really thought much about it."
He pulled each numbered bag of pieces out one by one and sorted the numbers in piles on the coffeetable then examined the instruction booklet.
Amy picked up a bag with a '2' on it. "I see a minifigure in here!"
Sheldon gently grabbed her wrist. "Woah, woah, woah. We can't just go opening packages willy nilly. We need to follow the directions. The first thing we need to do is put together the foundation. Can you pass me the large base plate?"
She reluctantly set the bag down and reached for the piece in question. She handed it to Sheldon then located the next piece.
They worked together for the next 30 minutes to complete the foundation of the firehouse.
"This is actually pretty fun and relaxing."
"I'm enjoying myself more than usual, too. Leonard says I'm too bossy, and he's terrible at following directions."
"What's next?"
"We need the bag of tiny pieces marked '1'."
As Sheldon continued studying the directions, Amy gently pulled at the top of the package. When it wouldn't open, she tugged harder. Still getting nowhere, she yanked at the plastic, causing hundreds of tiny pieces to fly all around them.
"Oh dear Lord! Amy, what did you do?"
"I'm sorry!" She cried. She gathered up the pieces on her lap, setting them on the coffeetable before getting up and digging into the teal couch cushions.
Sheldon got on his hands and knees on the floor. "How are we going to find them all? The horror! What were you thinking?"
"I said I'm sorry!"
She joined him on the floor, reaching under the couch. They added the new-found pieces to the small pile.
Sheldon returned to his seat, combing over the instruction book and categorizing the found pieces. "We're still missing a few."
She slowly circled the couch, finding only a couple more pieces then rejoining him on the couch. "They could be anywhere. We'll need to search every nook and cranny."
"Don't move."
"What? Why not?"
He scooted closer to her until their knees were touching then reached his hand to her hair.
"Sheldon?"
"Stay still," he murmured as his fingers brushed her long locks and closed in over them. He slowly drew his hand back to reveal a tiny blue translucent disc.
She blinked at the closeness of his face to hers. His eyes never left hers as he extended his arm towards the coffeetable, dropping the stray piece then enveloping her in a tight hug. Lowering his head he caught her lips in his, producing a soft moan from his girlfriend as she melted into him.
She reluctantly broke contact. "Sheldon, I'm sorry I was so clumsy. I promise I'll do everything I can to..."
"Shh," he hushed. "It's okay. We can always order anything we're missing. You're more important to me than... well anything."
She wrapped her arms around his neck and hungrily pressed her lips to his.
