Phoenix shifted restlessly in the uncomfortable visitor's chair. He looked up when he caught movement on the other side of the glass. A guard came in with a young woman. He did a double take when he realized who he was seeing. Maya. The blue and white stripes of the prison garb did not suit her. Of course who would they suit? But, to see her outside of her usual Kurain clothing was just weird. Weird and a reminder that he didn't make it back in time to save her.
Maya looked worried, but her face lit up with a smile when she sat across from Phoenix.
"Nick, I'm so glad you're here!"
"I'm sorry, Maya. If I got here sooner…" Phoenix said.
Maya shook her head. "You're here now." She gestured to her clothing with a weak grin. "So what do you think?"
"U-um." Phoenix stumbled.
"Yeah the food's pretty bad too."
Phoenix leaned forward. "Listen, that trial was a sham. They missed an incredibly important piece of evidence. They've agreed to a retrial and I'll be your defence."
"I knew you would."
"I'm sorry I couldn't stop this from happening."
"No no. I mean, it was bad… but I know you'll get me out of this mess." She grinned. "You'll just have to get me a great burger when I'm out of here. Promise?"
"Promise. Don't worry I'll get you out of that," Phoenix coughed, "um, there, here. I'll get you out of here."
"I know." Maya giggled and looked down tracing the stripes on her sleeve. When she looked up her eyes were overly bright. "You always get me out of messes. I know I'll be okay now."
They paused in an awkward silence before Maya started shifted and looking annoyed.
"Just, win this trial fast. If I have to be stuck in these much longer I'm gonna go crazy." She looked thoughtful. "I wonder if I could take a break… maybe channel someone…"
"Maya!"
"Just kidding!"
"I have to start gathering everything together," Phoenix said. "I'll come back again before the trial."
"Okay!"
They both stood and with a last look at Maya Phoenix turned to leave.
There was a trial to prepare for and win.
