This story is based on the Overwatch comic centered on Zarya and her "uncle" the heavy from TF2. This is going to be a bit of beforehand and from Heavy's perspective
The omnic dropped like a sack of bricks riddled with holes from Sasha as another stepped up to take its place. When the omnics had come most of the team had already been gone, sniper had gone home to see his family and never returned only for a letter to come some months later stating he'd been killed in his sleep by a fellow assassin. Spy had dropped off the radar after his stint with TF industries and was alive in everyone's minds until a body washed up on shore oddly similar to the missing man. Demo's drinking finally caught up with him and he didn't make it out of the fight since even medic's medigun couldn't heal him. Pyro died from asphyxiation due to their mask being cremated in their suit forever keeping who they were a secret. Soldier had gotten a job as a drill instructor only to be killed sacrificing himself to save his recruits from a live hand grenade. So many lost over the years.
The next omnic dropped before Sasha's stream of bullets and finally there was peace even temporarily. His niece appeared from the wreckage, distraught and scared; he panicked but not for his sake but for hers. What had she seen due to these machines and what would it do to her? That was for another time; for now she needed to get home.
Home, it was a foreign concept even now; after living so many years fighting and dying over nothing it was odd to say he could go home but him as well as the others had as the administrator kicked the bucket their contracts became null and void and homeward bound they all went. Scout had grown from his time and become a famous baseball star if he was remembering correctly and Engineer, he'd went back to the state he called home, dusty and dirty and not to different from teufort or any of their other battlegrounds; Texas. Back to his wife and his house and to heavy's knowledge that's where he still was when the omnics came and that's where Engineer would stay, his dispenser keeping the two of them alive and his sentries keeping them safe.
Zarya was beating lightly on his head over the story he'd told them of his time at snowycoast and clearly wasn't happy but she'd be ok as long as they kept moving they'd both be ok… until the omnic came.
"Zarya I'm going to move, and when I do you need to run." He didn't hear what all she was saying but once more with a firmer tone he told her. "Run!" He rose from his huddled position and even as she took off and Sasha started spinning he knew it was over. The giant of a man once more stood alone against the figures of oppression and death; no more friends to help him and no more family to guard during the fight. No more medic to heal him. It'd been ten years now since the man had been found dead in his laboratory, one of the first casualties of the omnic wars since he'd been using them as guards to protect his mediguns which were too valuable to fall into the governemts' hands. The omnics had turned and shredded him like wet paper and they hadn't even found him until a week later when they went to get their annual checkups on their uber meters.
Heavy growled and pulled the trigger even as the omnic launched the missile at him, this would be his final stand; for his family, for his friends, for his beliefs, and most of all… for him. The medic
