Satisfied

Star watched as Jackie and Marco walked through the hallways hand in hand in complete bliss. Ever since they went to the dance together, the Princess from another dimension felt like her role in her best friend's life was downgraded in favor of his new Girlfriend. And Star hated herself for being so upset.

She knew how much Marco liked Jackie and she should be happy for his happiness, but the pain of letting go her crush on him felt like a million daggers piercing her heart all at once. She looked down at her feet and shook her head. She couldn't show her nasty emotions getting the best of her to everyone at school. Especially to Marco.

"Hey Star, what's wrong?" Marco asked with concern, Star looked up to see him looking back at her with a worried expression on his face. He let go of Jackie's hand and walked over to her to see what was the matter. "Are you feeling alright?"

Star wanted to yell in his face. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs about everything she was feeling and she wanted to confess her feelings for him just to get everything over with. But instead she put on her rehearsed smile she used for her Mother when she wanted to make her happy and nodded her head. "Yup. I'm doing great!"

"You sure? I can take you home if you're feeling sick. Your face has gone pale..." Marco responded as he placed his hand on her forehead and checked her temperature. "You're not lying to me are you?"

Star did her best to keep up her facade. "Geez Marco, you're such a worry wart. I'm fine! Really! I'm just... a little tired that's all. Now go catch up with Jackie, she's waiting for you."

"OK, But if you start to feel upset just let me know. I'll take you home so you can lay down and rest up." Marco promised as he gazed into her eyes. Searching for the truth he knew she was hiding from him.

Star smiled at his gaze. "I promise I'll let you know."

So Marco turned on his heel and walked back up to Jackie who started asking him about what happened. Star leaned against a pillar beside her and waited till he was out of sight so she could slowly sink down and wrap her arms around her knees.

"No matter how much it hurts...no matter how much I want to change what's going on right now...I can't. Maybe I'll never have a place in Marco's eyes as his Girlfriend...but I'll always have a place in his heart as his best friend and I should be grateful for that." Star whispered to herself as her eyes glazed over with a wistful desire that would never be met. At the rate things were going, she knew she would never be satisfied.
