Making Time for Each Other
Being in a long distance relationship was not easy but Hank and Olivia had managed to make it work at times. Lately though, every time one of them tried to get away for the weekend, something came up. It had been a few months since they had actually been in the same city and it was frustrating. A case had come up that required Olivia and her whole squad to go to Chicago. They were all at the airport waiting for their flight.
"Well, Liv, at least you and Voight will get to be in the same city."
"I'm grateful for that. Noah pointed that out too when I told him I had to go to Chicago for work. Then again, so did Lucy."
"I told Sienna that if she had any problems to call Lucy."
"I told Lucy that she might need to help out with the girls as well. She was fine with that."
"Your mom isn't helping out?"
"Have you met my mother?"
"Yeah."
"That's my point. She has enough going on with Mason and besides, she took him to Atlanta for the weekend anyway. She was gone before I even knew we were going to Chicago."
"Seriously, Liv, why don't you and Voight let me take over and that way the two of you can spend time on your own?"
"I'll have to think about that."
A little while later, they boarded their flight and several hours later, they arrived in Chicago. They got their luggage and the rental before heading to the 21st. By the time they got there, there were still no leads on the case. Trudy buzzed them in and they all headed upstairs.
"Yo, Kev!"
"What up, Bro?"
"Not much."
"Hey, everyone."
"Hey, Captain. Hey, Rollins."
"Hey."
"Everyone, this is Officer Katriona Tamin. She goes by Kat. Kat, this is Detective Jay Halstead, Detective Hailey Upton, Officer Adam Ruzek, Officer Kevin Atwater, Officer Kim Burgess and Officer Vanessa Rojas."
"Nice to meet you, Kat."
"You too."
Everyone got caught up while Olivia headed over to Hank's office. He was looking through case files and not looking too happy. She knocked on the door frame. He looked up and saw who it was.
"Hey. Get in here."
Olivia went into Hank's office and shut the door.
"So, no leads yet?"
"Nope."
"I have missed you so much."
"I've missed you too."
Hank got up, walked over to Olivia and wrapped his arms around her.
"Fin suggested he take over the case, so the two of us can spend some time on our own."
"Sounds tempting."
"I'm beginning to think you don't want to spend time with me."
"You're crazy if that's what you think."
"Then why can't Fin take over so we can have some much needed time together?"
"This isn't working."
"What isn't working?"
"Us."
"I'm here now and we need this. Hank, I don't want to break up. We've been playing this game between us ever since I broke up with Ed. I realize we haven't had much time for each other since Christmas but do you know how heartbroken that would make Noah? He's crazy about you. I'd be heartbroken too. I've been through so much these last several months losing Simon and then Ed. Even though we weren't together, you still kept me sane. I love you more than I have ever loved anyone who isn't Noah. Hank, I need you so much. We need each other."
Olivia broke down and then Hank rubbed her back.
"I don't want to break up either but this has been way harder than I thought it would be. It seems like everything is against us."
"We can give up on us. We just can't. I'm getting worn out from working so much and we haven't made love in almost 6 months."
They went and sat down on the sofa.
"How do we navigate this then?"
"I don't know."
"Benson, don't whine."
"I'm not whining."
"Yeah, you are."
"Maybe we should just get married."
"What's that gonna prove? We can't handle being in a relationship and not seeing each other now. How do you plan on us trying to be in a long distance marriage doing basically the same exact thing?"
"I don't know. You could retire and move to New York."
"I could? Why can't you retire and move here?"
"I outrank you. That's why."
"Oh, is that how it works?"
"Yep."
"You've been a pain in my ass since the day we met. You know that?"
"Good, then it worked."
Hank laughed and kissed her.
"I hate this."
"I do too but maybe it's time we think about our future."
"I think you're right."
"Aren't I always?"
"Don't push your luck, Benson."
They both turned and Hank moved the blinds, so they could look out the window of his office. Jay and Fin were both explaining what they knew about the case to each squad.
"You trusting him any more than you were?"
"Yeah. I told him not that long ago that the unit would be his to run someday."
"So, you have been thinking about it?"
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't."
"I'm not against moving here but I've got a lot more responsibility now that I'm a Captain."
"I get it. This job hasn't been the same since Al died and I am still blaming myself for that one. I'm just glad you stuck by me with that."
"I told you I'd stick with you no matter what. The thought of you going to prison scared me but I understand why you did what you did."
"Meredith is still pissed at me though."
"She just needs time. I've talked to her and she knows that Al was just protecting you, which is what friends do."
"I let him down though."
"Hank, quit blaming yourself. It's not going to bring Al back."
"If I had admitted what I had done, he'd still be here."
"And you'd either be in prison or dead."
"My squad wouldn't miss me."
"I'm guessing they probably would."
"I doubt it."
"I'd miss you."
"You would?"
"Yeah, I would. You and Noah are everything to me. Think of the boys. Daniel already has to grow up without Justin. He shouldn't be without his grandpa too. Noah loves you as much as his mom does and I do want the 3 of us to be a family."
"I want that too."
Hank kissed Olivia again. Both squads had gone to follow a lead. Jay and Fin had texted their respective bosses and said they were fine and would let them know if they needed them for anything. They decided to head to Hank's. Hank took Olivia's hand and they headed to Hank's SUV. He drove home and then as soon as they arrived, they went in. Hank locked up and then they started kissing. They headed up to the bedroom and Hank kicked the door closed. They moved over to the bed, undressed each other and made love. Afterwards Hank had his arms around Olivia and she had her head on his chest.
"That was so amazing."
"It sure was."
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"Promise me that we won't go this long without seeing each other again."
"I think I can promise that."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Hank and Olivia started kissing and ended up making love again. The squads found the guy they were looking for but he was dead, so they were glad that the case was over. After Fin had dropped Amanda and Kat off at the hotel, he dropped Olivia's stuff off at Hank, since he figured that was where she was planning to stay. She said she was but she was staying through the weekend, so he would be in charge until she got back.
Hank and Olivia spent time together discussing their future. One of the things Hank did while Olivia was still there was put in his papers for his retirement and he had also talked to his squad about it. They assured him they would be fine without him. They all pretty much knew it was coming because they know how much he loved Olivia. By the time the weekend was over, Hank had proposed to Olivia and she accepted. She couldn't wait to tell Noah when she got back to New York. He didn't want the subject of marriage to come up until one of them agreed to make the move in order for them to be in the same city. He figured all along that he'd be the one relocating but he was fine with it and their relationship was worth giving up his life in Chicago.
