Chapter 37: Epilogue: Reluctant Babysitters
He agreed to this. Why had he agreed to this? Wait... had he actually agreed? He couldn't remember agreeing. There was no way he agreed to this. Never!
"Because you're a vital part of Team Raptor!" Owen had said with way too much enthusiasm. "They even gave you a nickname! Mole!"
Mole! What a ridiculous nickname! And Owen had tricked him! That was the only thing that made any sense. Owen had tricked him and that's why he was sitting at the counter in Owen's trailer, staring at the sleeping, tiny Indominous Rex twins who were curled up in the pillownest. Lowery took a deep breath. In and out. He could do this. Sure he could! He was part of the Team! Lowery rolled his eyes and shook his head. What a load of dinoshit! He wasn't really a part of the team. Not like Owen. Or hell, not even like Zach! Zach wasn't part raptor! How did he fit in so well? Was it just the fact that he was maybe dating Owen? Lowery couldn't do that. Well... he could. He wasn't exactly gay. Maybe he was. Maybe he wasn't. He wasn't completely sure. But he could admit that maybe he had a tiny man crush on Owen. Or a real crush. He wasn't sure. But the guy was just so awesome! And maybe taken.
So no. Lowery wasn't like Owen or Zach. He wasn't a real Team Raptor member. And yet, he let himself be talked into this!
A tiny, while tail moved. Just a tiny, little flutter.
Lowery held his breath and didn't move. Please don't wake up! Please don't wake up! Please don't wake up! Please don't wake up! Please don't wake up! Whoever it was, he couldn't tell them apart, just snuggled up more against the other. They both stayed asleep. Lowery breathed out deeply and leaned back slightly. On the stool. That he forgot was a stool. It toppled backwards a bit and Lowery couldn't right it. He fell back as the stool slipped out from under him. He landed on the floor with a loud thud. "Ow..." He rolled over slowly and came face to face with wide, pink eyes. Lowery's eyes widened and he attempted to scramble back away from them. But the place was small and there was no room and he hit the counter.
One of them tilted her head to the side and stretched her neck out. And Lowery closed his eyes, like he was certain she was going to attack. Which was stupid. He knew it was stupid. They were little. They were babies. Babies with large teeth. That were going to get bigger. Much bigger. Really fast. Because Zach had said they were growing faster than they should. Lowery opened his eyes quickly. And felt stupid. They were both still just staring at him curiously. Probably because he fell off the stool and made too much racket. Maybe they were showing concern for him. Or thinking him stupid. Whatever it was, they weren't plotting to eat him.
Well... maybe they weren't. Lowery hoped they weren't. He really had no clue. At all.
There was a loud bang. Lowery literally jumped up to his feet. The twins just stared at him. One of them looked back, towards the door. And Lowery heard the knock that time. He blinked. "Uh... that was the door." He said lamely. "Someone is knocking at the door."
The twin looking at him nodded her head. The one staring at the door chirped loudly, sounding excited. The other turned and joined in. Then together, they ran towards the door, chirping.
"Uh..." Lowery followed behind them. He frowned down at them and waved his arm. "Back up, back up!" He said. "I can't open the door if you're blocking it." The twins seemed to understand. They both took a step back and Lowery reached for the door. He pulled it open barely a couple inches before they were in the way again, trying to push it the rest of the way open. "Seriously?"
"Oh!" There was a startled squeak.
Lowery got the door completely open finally and Claire stood, blinking at him. The twins let out panicked squeals and dashed behind Lowery. "Uh... hi."
"Lowery?"
"Yes." He turned slightly and looked at the twins behind him. "Are they hiding from you?" He looked back at Claire.
Claire blinked for a moment and shrugged her shoulders. "I honestly have no clue."
Lowery nodded and tilted his head to the side. "Kinda cool."
Claire rolled her eyes. "Is Owen here?"
Lowery shook his head. "Nope."
She looked disappointed and breathed out. "I've been trying to call him. He said he got a new phone with the same number but he's not answering me."
"He's out hunting." Lowery said. "Probably... turned it off. Or can't hear it over the motorcycle." Owen hadn't taken the motorcycle. He hoped she didn't notice the motorcycle behind his and Owen's jeeps.
"Hunting?" She repeated. "Like in the jungle. With the raptors."
Lowery nodded. "Yep."
Claire breathed out and shook her head. "Well... what are you doing here?"
"Babysitting." He answered.
She cocked an eyebrow. "Seriously?"
Lowery nodded again and then shrugged. "They're babies, aren't they?"
"I guess you have a point." She said slowly, glancing down at them again. "Uh... hi." She said, lifting her hand to wave at them. "Remember me?"
One of the twins let out a loud squeak. Then they both darted off and jumped into their pillownest. They ducked down, hiding completely from view.
"I guess that means yes." Lowery said with a smile.
Claire straightened up and sighed. "How are they okay with you?"
Lowery shrugged. "Owen told them to listen to me."
"And it worked?" She asked.
Lowery shrugged again. "Maybe."
Her voice dropped. "How are you okay with them?" She whispered.
"Because I'm awesome." He said. "I'm totally just like Owen. We're all a team."
Claire raised her eyebrows and stared at him.
Lowery fidgeted for a moment. "Well... I can tell him you stopped by..." He trailed off.
Claire shook her head. "No, this is fine." She pushed past him, walking into the trailer.
"What is fine?" He asked, his eyes following her.
"I promised Zach earlier today that I would give them a second chance." Claire stated like it was an important fact.
Lowery tilted his head to the side. "What exactly... does that mean?" He asked slowly.
"That means i have to join the club, too."
"Clue?"
"The Raptor Club."
"Team." Lowery corrected. "Team Raptor."
"Whatever." She said, stepping closer to the nest. She tilted her head to the side and smiled. "Cute." She bent down and smiled at them. "Hello. Again." She said. "I think we got off on the wrong foot. Claw." She corrected. "Let's start over. I'm aunt Claire." She smiled and waved again. "Now, let's see... Minnie?"
The slightly smaller one let out a squeak.
Claire nodded and looked at the other one. "That makes you Indigo."
Indigo nodded her head, like she understood and was answering.
"Alright." Claire said, breathing out slowly. "Indigo is slightly bigger." She said. "And her eyes are a lighter pinkish color. Minnie's tail looks shorter. I will try to remember that." She nodded her head.
"Huh." Lowery had closed the door and stepped closer. He crossed his arms and watched.
Claire glanced over at him. "What?"
"I'd forgotten how Owen told them apart. It didn't occur to me to ask them."
Claire shook her head slowly. "That's why I'm the aunt and you're the babysitter."
Lowery frowned. "Hey!" He snapped. "I'm more than just the babysitter! I can be the uncle! Hey!" He knelt down beside her. "Uncle Lowery, alright?"
Claire smiled and let out a laugh.
"Don't trust her!" Lowery said, pointing sideways at her. "She's been body snatched!"
Claire rolled her eyes.
The two humans started bickering back and forth. The twins looked at each other for a moment. Minnie snorted and curled up, wrapping her short tail tightly around herself. She was still tired. Uncle Mole had woken them up and cut their nap short. She let out a soft whine and Indigo answered before curling up beside her sister. They both blocked out the still bickering humans and went back to sleep.
