It's a beautiful evening. Garfield and Arlene are sitting on the fence as usual.
- I sure do love moments like this, Arlene said.
- Yeah, Garfield replied. The moon looks like a giant cheese ball from here.
- Oh, for God's sake, Arlene replied annoyed. That's not what I meant.
- Sorry, Arlene, Garfield answered. I was just thinking about...
-Food, right? Sometimes I think...
- You know what I'm wondering? Garfield replied.
- What? Arlene asked.
- How the heck do you put up with me? Garfield answered in a serious manner.
Arlene gets surprised.
- Garfield... are you crying?
- No, he answered. My eyes are tired, that's it.
- Come on, Garfield. I know you're lying.
Arlene was pretty serious now as well.
- Are you mad at me because I yelled at you... again?
Garfield didn't answer.
- Are you mad at... yourself? Arlene inquired.
Garfield nodded slowly.
- Garfield, look at me.
Garfield moved his face slowly towards Arlene's.
- Listen Garfield, I didn't mean to hurt you, but...
- I know, Garfield interrupted. I can take criticism, sure, but when I make the same mistake over and over, I feel...
- Don't say what I think you're gonna say, Arlene replied. Garfield said it anyway.
Arlene started to cry as well.
- Snap out of it, she shouted.
Garfield looks at her with teary eyes. Arlene looked at him with the same expression.
- Y'know, Garfield. There's something I wanna tell you. I do mistakes too.
- How often do you make mistakes? Garfield asked.
- Everytime I get mad at you, Arlene answered. If you think that's painful, imagine how I feel.
- You hate fighting with me? Garfield replied.
- Of course I do, Arlene answered. But let me tell you what. Just because I get really mad at you, doesn't mean I've begun to hate you.
You wondered how I always comes back to you and get mad at you again for the same reasons. I'd like to ask you the same question.
- You're not serious, are you? Garfield replied.
- Yes, Garfield. I am serious, Arlene replied. How do you put up with me? I'm not better than you.
- Does that mean we're both terrible?
- Of course not. That means we're flawed. But don't think being flawed means you're irredeemable.
Arlene came closer to Garfield.
- Do you want to know want to know why I like returning to you time and time again? Arlene asked.
Garfield nodded.
- It's because I know you're not as bad as the others think you are. Or rather not as bad as YOU think you are.
- You wanna know one other thing? I'm happy I found you. You've made my life special! Did you know that?
- Really? Garfield asked. You think so?
- Of course. Arlene smiled.
- You know, Arlene. Garfield started. You've made my life special as well.
- Oh really?
- Yes. Even if I do screw up a lot, I've never told you I actually like being with you. You make me feel different. You're the only girl I've met who actually like me -despite my flaws.
- I don't like you, Garfield. Arlene answered. I LOVE you!
- I love you too Arlene, Garfield answered. I'm not kidding. Thank you for loving me.
Arlene is not surprised.
- I knew it all along. You're welcome.
She hugs him and then they kiss. That special long, romantic kiss. And they both felt very happy.
But all of a sudden, Arlene says:
- You know what? The moon sure looks like a cheese ball from here.
- Oh, for God's sake... Garfield starts, but couldn't finish the sentence as he bursted into laughter.
And then Arlene bursted into laughter as well.
