Today was the day! The perfect day to go shopping. Can you hear the sarcasm in his voice? Very strongly.
"Now now, Danny," Maddie, resident mother and the current one dragging Danny with her to said shopping, tried to comfort him.
"We haven't gone on many trips like this as just us!" At least, not one involuntarily, like the vacation horror that Maddie last remembered.
(She didn't regret much these days but sometimes, with all the distance she felt between her children and them… She wishes she had a little more time with her babies.)
"Yeah, it's been a while, huh?" Danny said, rubbing the back of his head before shrugging and grabbing his jacket and backpack to carry extra groceries she was bound to grab.
She hummed to herself, smiling as her son— and when had he grown so big? It seemed like yesterday that he was clinging to her pants, asking what invention she was making at that time.— simply sighed, giving a tiny smile as he dutifully walked next to her. The shopping center wasn't far off that no car was needed. Walking was a good exercise as well! Jack and her had been cooped up for a wee bit too long this time. The sunlight felt almost like heaven to her when she stepped out for a breather.
As they walked, Danny started to talk, rambling about what he had been doing back when she and Jack had gone to the ghost convention. It seems he had actually finished what summer homework he had left before going off to play games with Sam and Tucker. Occasionally she would ask a small question, clarification on something as her son started to talk about DOOM. While she herself wasn't interested in the game it was nice to watch her son enthusiastically talk about what he liked.
"And Tuck and I were like on the final stages of the event game, before this stupid strong monster decided to one shot K.O. Tuck, like what kind of power balance is that?—" he hiccuped, conversation stalled as the youngest of the Fenton family covered his mouth. Another hiccup and she gave a laugh.
"Did you eat too fast today?" She said jokingly, blinking as a thin fog leaked out of his hands. And that's when she grew concerned.
"Danny?" His eyes seemed to flicker to her before looking around with narrowed eyes. Her son had stopped, had stiffened, even as he hiccuped again. She frowned, placing a hand on his shoulder. It was still closer to summer then autumn. It wasn't that cold, the sun was also out. And...the look in his eyes. Something had shifted and she only now realised the distance between her and her son.
"Danny? Are you—?" before the nearby store door they were about to walk past exploded outward with a bang, it's glass shattering from the force of it all. Civilians screamed as mad cackling could be heard and she snapped her head forward, already bringing her hood up and unholstering the green gun she always kept with her. Now was no time to find herself concerned.
"Stay back Danny!" She pulled back on his shoulder, letting him stumble back a bit. His eyes seemed wide, but she paid it no mind. A ghost, soundly and highly unfamiliar to her seemed to float inside the store, a jewelry store from what she could see and this unnaturally blue and...plump ghost was rummaging happily through the display cases with nary a care of the destruction it was causing.
"Freeze Ghost!" The gun whirred to life, it's green light casting shadows around the now broken lightbulb store. The civilians had clambered off to run and scream. The clerk seemed to be cowering under the desk,
Truce or not, to her, Danny was scared of ghosts. Danny that, despite his fear, had tried to make ghosts behave. Made herself believe that maybe not all ghosts were bad. She'd be damned if that were all to start crumbling down because of one ghost. She raised the gun steady at the ghost that began to laugh at her.
"I'm not the only one!"
And her world went green.

Her hearing was murky. Her body felt not her own. There was yelling, angry shouting and bright flashes. What was happening?
There was the yelling. It sounded like Danny. And then another, two others. One of which sounded an awful lot like hers.
"As your prince—!"
What?
"Let her go!"
"Never!"
That was her speaking, unable to control or even understand what this stupid ghost was saying. She should have brought the belt.
"You will never be our King!"
Right. Overshadowing. And yet she didn't feel like doing anything about it. Couldn't. A small thought in her mind niggled at her to start thinking of a better counter to possession, especially if she was without the belt. Something small. Perhaps a necklace? Or a bracelet? Like the Fenton wrist laser.
The sound of a fenton gun charging. The thud of a body, a cry of shock. Pain and clarity rushed back into her leaving her gasping for the air her body needed. She slowly blinked, the green bleeding away, replaced by the black comfort of unconsciousness.
——————
Something was yanking at her, pulling the mother back into consciousness. No, let her rest. She felt far too tired for the real world right now. Wait. Why was she sleeping? Wasn't she supposed to be shopping?
Green eyes invaded her vision and she shot up with a gasp. A yelp answered her as someone leaned out of the way to prevent any head bashing.
"Danny!" She shouted, hurriedly looking this way and that, despite the vertigo. A hand is pushed on her shoulder, pushing her back down with surprising strength.
"M-Mom! It's me! I'm okay!" Blue eyes, black hair. He was safe. That's good.
"Just, stay down for a bit," he stuttered, concerns and care for her in his eyes.
You're a bit bruised up." He reported. He was right, as she only now started to recognize the small bruising pains all over her body.
"What happened to the other ghosts?" She asks instead, eyes looking around through her now cracked goggles. Danny holds up a green soup container with a sheepish smile.
"I got 'em." She nods, satisfied, and a little proud before her eyes stray to something twitching behind him. She would squint, not noticing Danny stiffen. It looked like a ghost but…?
"What's that behind you?" Maddie asks, trying to shift to look better behind him. The thing looked like a snake— Danny shifts from one knee to the other and the concerned mother is looking at him.
"What's what?" He says, voice somehow an octave higher. Suspicious. She looks again, and whatever was moving behind him was gone. She tapped her goggles. It gives the pathetic whining sound of a dying robot. Damn, broken. In the distance, the sound of sirens. Her head hurt. A hand on her shoulder again.
"Take it easy mom. Being possessed probably sucked and well, I— I had to shoot you." Said the wavering voice. She only now notices the discarded Fenton gun near her feet. Silence for a few extra minutes, surrounded by broken glass and with a smile she pulls him in for a hug.
"Thank you, Danny." And awkward Danny, stiff, no longer a child, scared Danny. Danny, who walked into a ghost fight to save his family, who made a truce between ghosts and the living world, hugged back.
(Somewhere in Danny's mind was relief. His secret almost got out because of a tail of all things.)
———
The police came, finally, as did an ambulance. Questions were asked, a head checked and beyond some scrapes and bruises they soon were released. (That was one good thing about being well known. Things went faster sometimes. Sometimes.)
They sat on a bench nearby, having called Jack to pick her and Danny up. It was no wonder that they didn't feel quite up to shopping today.
A comfortable silence falls over them, Danny holding a death grip to the container. The thing that happened to throw such a large wrench into plans. Should she say anything? Words of comfort? It had been so long…
It was Danny that broke the silence.
"Hey mom…" she looks at him, giving a soft grunt of confirmation that she was listening. Did you..." he says, hesitant, quiet. He fiddled with the container, spinning it round in his hands.
"Did you remember anything? When— when you were—" he couldn't seem to get the word out, face paling a little at the thought.
"When I was possessed?" She finishes for him placing a hand on his shoulder. He flinched and her concern grew ever stronger. Of course, seeing his own mother being possessed must have freaked him out. Maybe traumatized too.
"Y— yeah…" was the stuttered answer.
Silence, as she tried to think back, the murkiness of memories surfacing with blurred colours and sound, before she shook her head.
"Nothing but colours and movement. Was there something that happened?" He seemed to almost relax under her words.
"No, that's… that's just interesting? I guess? To hear about." Oh? Was her son actually interested? In ghosts? Of course he was, he did make that truce after all, as shaky as that was. She would smile, patting his shoulder.
"Well, it's certainly something to take note of!" And the scientist part of her, the one patiently waiting comes forth as she excited starts thinking of the implications of possession. She hadn't really put as much focus on that aspect of a ghost but maybe she should start. Her hands itches to grab a paper and pen that she didn't have. The sound of screeching tires greeted them both. Perfect, the RV should have some.
Lost in her thoughts and calculations she missed Danny's sigh, a smile on his face. Glad that his mom's opinion didn't change any more than usual. Which was merely interest and if thetwitch of her hands said anything, just a lot of researching. He glanced at the container in his hands, eyes sparking green as he glared at it. The sound of screeching tires and a yelled out 'Danny boy!' Before he was scooped up in a hug worthy of Fenton names. His mood lifted, laughing and maybe choking a little at his air being suddenly removed.
He'll worry about the implications of what he heard from the two ghosts later. For now, family.
And his family was great.

A/N: Cheesy, my writing is atrocious. I think my style changed like five times during this whole thing and I'm feeling pretty sorry that I couldn't write Maddie as, well, Maddie? I just think somethings missing.
So anyways, I like to think that another reason that possession is a no no on humans is because ghosts forget to breathe. Self suffocation? Usually the more smarter or younger ones remember to do so. Not often though.
And now!
Sorry for such a hibernation lmao. It's been a hella long time and I'm glad for anyone that's even here to read this Kehe. Thank you again and here's to aiming for another chapter!
I'm getting through this! I actually have minor plot! See ya next time!
