Summary – Dean's thoughts at Mary's announcement.

It shouldn't surprise him anymore when a friend or family member leaves him, but it hits him hard every time. It certainly doesn't make the pain hurt any less, yet he never expected the source of pain to come from his own mother. He can't keep the hurt off of his face, looking away from Mary as if her touch will burn the words deep into his skin, where he can read them over and over again. He doesn't look up when Mary hugs Sam, but he can tell his younger brother is also hurt by her words. Just when they thought everything was going their way. Just when they truly believed the universe had spared them and given them a break for once. Just when Dean was starting to believe they could, finally, be a family again. How naïve he's been. They leave. They always leave: his father, Sam (on more than one occasion), Bobby, Charlie, and so many more. It's like a curse he can never break away from no matter how hard he tries. To all appearances, Amara's well-meaning gift has turned into that exact curse. Mentally, he adds his mother's name to that list. He doesn't react when Mary leaves, the shutting of the bunker door echoing loudly in her wake. Face stoic and void of any emotion, Dean says nothing to Sam as he walks purposefully into the kitchen. Grabbing a cold beer from the refrigerator, he then makes a beeline for his bedroom, passing Sam's dejected form on the way.

"Dean - ," Sam starts to say.

"Drop it, Sam," Dean cuts him off, sharply. "She made her choice."

That said, he enters his original destination and slams the door behind him. Within minutes, he's lying propped up in bed, headphones in to block out the world. At least his music can't leave him like his family seems to love to do.
